I am wondering if the colour of skin can affect the percieved color of a diamond...

Im with a girl with darker olive skin, it really is a great tone and I am wondering if I could get a "yellower"
diamond because it would be perceived more white...this would allow me to get a little bit bigger of a diamond and cross over the one carat mark.

when i say yellower I am talking I''s J''s and K''s in an ideal cut round brilliant with a great HCA.

size just over a carat, maybe 1.25...

No idea. But I have a feeling super white diamonds probably look great against very dark skin.

I do know that the tanner my skin gets in the summer the whiter my diamond looks even my J''s. hehe

Since I have olive skin, we looked in the H-J range for color for my e-ring. If you set the stone in yellow gold, especially 18kt., you can get away with a yellower color. We went for yellow gold because it looks good against darker skin. Does your girl wear silver colored or gold colored jewelry?

silver...

im going to go with the platinum swan setting...

she is dark, this is the diamond i was looking at:

I''m a girl with darker skin (olive/gold tones in it). My ring features a K-colored OEC, and it looks white as can be. I''ve tried all kinds of diamonds -- from ideal-cut bright bright whites to W-Z range stones to fancy vivid yellows, and I think they all look nice :). The platinum/white diamond combination will really pop against her skin, and you''ll get that lovely, classic "white solitaire" look with a I-K colored stone. Oooh, do ask the jeweler if it''s a yellowish I-K, or if there are secondary tones of brown or gray. Soft tones of yellow are the best for our skin.

Hey there! I think you should be fine with the J! I''ve got that pretty, dark olive complexion you were talking about, my marquise is a "low" H (more on the I side, to be honest) and (when clean) looks icy white against my skin. Plus, I have a white gold setting.
DSC00088kkhftgbh.jpg

The stone is kinda dirty there, but man, when she''s clean she''s blinding! I am also setting an oval stone right now and I believe the color on that is an I, and it looks great!

I''ll let you know if I come across any other pics to give you some visuals! Good luck!

When you''re talking I-K range in an ideal cut round, most of these stones will face up white no matter what your skin color is. One of my favorite links to show people around here is this one:
http://www.goodoldgold.com/4Cs/Color/NearColorless/

Scroll all the way down, and you''ll see a J sitting right next to a D. Even on a plain background, right next to each other, there''s very little difference face up. In real life, only the most color-sensitive people will be able to tell you that''s not icy white!

thanks, that really helped! alot haha...

Now I had to piece a bunch of information from a couple of different threads, but it looks like hikerchick has a "STRONG H" that is closer to an I than a G (much like mine) with strong flouro. Here''s a pic of her with the ring on

Lighting really affects skin color in pics, but in any case it looks like SayYes'' fiance''s has a gorgeous golden complexion. Here''s her H colored stone

For reference, here is G colored stone on DignDive''s fiance

Here''s a cool chart that valeria101 posted a while back

Hope this was useful!

I''ve noticed that most people don''t spot color even in a stone it should be really obvious in (my N colored OEC for example). They see a sparkly rock and they often think that sparkle=quality and quality=high color. I''ve had numerous people ask if my stone was a D. Which weirds me out (an N OEC is not really yellowish looking, but it sure isn''t colorless!) but it just shows you how little most people day-to-day know about diamonds.

If you get an ideal cut J and keep it clean, very very few people will notice any color.

I am not sure if skin tone affects what people see as far as diamond color goes much at all... maybe a bit. But an ideal cut J on most anyone is going to look pretty darn white, regardless of skin tone.

Yes. I have dark olive skin and my diamond looks really white (I color) on my skin. I definitely could go down one or maybe to colors and it will look very white still.

Hee Hee Hee, I''ve wondered about how to refer to you considering you''re a symbol.

Maybe, "the artist formerly know as...."

I would definitely think you could go lower in color, because the contrast of it against her skin will make it really stand out. Lucky her!!!

I proudly sport a K

, previously a J, and am quite fair complected. I definately think darker skin tones would only help, so in your case I think you''re VERY safe to go with J or K ideal cuts!

Here''s a link to my K, with several hand shots:

And some J hand shots:

Face up, I really can''t say that I notice a difference with my K compared to the J.

I just did a QUICK search and saw this stone:

I think it'll look great against her skin. I have an "I" colored diamond and it looks so white... Also, I have some fluorescence which I heard can take away from of the "warmth" color from the nearly colorless diamonds. Just something to consider...
