Ok PSers - this is just a FUN FHR for me. Ruby is a cheap treated one (gasp!) but I'm 100% ok with that. I need to make a quick decision.

I have found two that meet my requirements (please dont' steal them from under me!) I will post links coz putting photos is difficult from this computer.

Option #1 http://www.gemselect.com/ruby/ruby-350486.php

Option #2 http://www.gemselect.com/ruby/ruby-349850.php

They are both almost identical in weight, size and price. I'm just slightly torn about which will be the most RED in real life. I don't want a pink ruby! I just want it to be red and not too blotchy if you know what I mean. I like the clarity & colour of #2 but the size and even-tone of #1...

Quick thoughts from anyone? I am frozen by indecision

From the images on my monitor at least, the first one seems more red than the second one, but then again they are both described as "Pink Red Ruby." Can you get them both and return the one you don't prefer? I guess it might not be worth the return shipping costs for a $50 stone...

2 too

#2

For my own learning purposes, why is everyone into #2? It looks more pink to me than #1.

Looks like #2 is the most recommended choice. Will order it now. Thanks for your help! :wavey:

Re: Snap decision for ruby - help me choose! - UPDATED

Just a quick update - the stone came today from GemSelect and it's better than expected! :appl:

It's a lovely proper ruby red - not pink, not too cloudy and really well cut. For $60 I'm astounded just how much I'm willing to look the other way at it's BE treatment. :naughty:

Looking forward to making this into a fun RHR - I've got two small emerald cut sidestones (unmentionables) which will go nicely with it.

Will go somewhere local to get it set but probably will wait until xmas. Will try to get some photos tonight once I get home. :wavey:

Ok no photos BUT I did ask my local jeweller to set it. As soon as she found out it was lead-glass filled she literally refused to work with it. I get it - not cool BUT it was meant to be just for fun. ;( She felt it was likely to crack under heat/pressure whilst being set and hence a waste of time & money. Any opinions on this? I ended up getting a different stone set so no loss but was suprised at her reaction - I though lead glass treatment was permanent & stable?

Why is 2 still showing up as available?

It is not showing up as available to me.

Yes, I've heard that lead glass filled rubies become more brittle.. . Too bad. What stone did you end up setting then?

The problem is that you (and the jeweller) doesn't know the level of treatment, so the bench doesn't know whether there is more ruby than glass and vice versa. Some vendors are honest enough to call it "composite ruby" if there is more glass than ruby. A lead glass filled ruby is less stable during the setting process because due to the glass bringing its overall durability down. Any work that requires heat such as retipping prongs will cause the lead glass in the cavity to melt, affecting the look of the ruby. The glass is also affected by any acids it comes into contact with (household cleaning solution and citrus fruits).

Ahhh I seeeee thanks Chrono, guess its a learning stone then!

I got my Zircons set instead so very happy.

Oh I see now.

Well, it's still one pretty glass ruby.
