Its been a great sparkly acquisition year! But I've been a very naughty PriceScoper and not posted any of my new lovelies.

Last spring I bought a 1.6 ct K VVS2 ACA and wore it in a YG necklace. I bezel set it. It was beautiful, but I wanted larger and whiter.

So I upgraded to a 2.12 G VVS2 ACA. I am ready to set this new friend and I need your help!

Do two-tone necklaces look weird?

I want the chain to be YG, about 1.6 - 1.7 mm. HOWEVER, because I now have a fairly white diamond (G), I think I want the head of the setting to be in a cool metal because I don't want it to make my diamond appear warmer. But I'm worried the two tones will look weird or distracting. I'm thinking I want the head be a 3 prong style such as this: https://www.whiteflash.com/diamond-pendants/three-prong-martini-diamond-pendant-1557.htm

My goal is for the viewer's eye to see a fairly white diamond on a yellow gold chain. I want to keep the look super clean, just diamond and chain, nothing else to distract the eye.

Do any of you all have pendant necklaces (in any style) using two-tones? Can you show me?

Do you think I should have the entire head be a cool metal or just the prongs? (I'm thinking the entire head, but am not sure if that will look distracting).

Do you think for the cool metal part I should use WG or platinum? From a structural standpoint, are there any issues if I attach a YG chain to a platinum head or prongs? Should I keep it all gold instead of introducing platinum?

Anything else I'm not thinking of?

Thanks!

My three stone pendant is a bit of a two tone. The bail is yellow and white gold. The setting was made by Whiteflash in palladium and all three diamonds are G, VS2 ACAs. The chain is white gold but I can also wear it with a yellow gold chain. Not the same as what you are contemplating but I love mixed metals and the versatility. My ering has a platinum head and an 18 kt gold shank. I wanted a touch of yellow gold warmth to this pendant thus the yellow gold addition to the bail. I have bracelets in both yellow and white gold so I like to wear some of both colors even though I am a yellow old lover at heart!
I would always want a white diamond to be set in an all white metal. Can you ask Whiteflash to do a mock up picture of this white metal setting with a yellow gold chain?

I have a fairly small OEC set in a white gold bezel slide and I sometimes put it on a yellow gold chain, sometimes rose, and sometimes white. I like mixed metals so for me there is nothing strange about what you think you might want. That said, for a fixed pendant I would suggest making sure you like the combo since it is something that you can't change out off and on. Have you seen, or tried on, any fixed pendant style with a white metal setting on a yellow chain?
As an aside, I actually don't think that a yellow setting will make your G look less white. But I know others do. One option might be to have a yellow gold setting but have them rhodium plate the inside where the diamond sits. I'd consider that if you would like a yellow gold setting but are afraid of it warming your stone. I'm sure that could be done.

Congrats on your new ACA upgrade! You really have been holding out on us! I would go white metal for the whole head and not just the prongs.

I have a two tone pendant and I am really glad that I decided to go two tone!

Perfect example of what she is looking for and your pendant is indeed beautiful!

FWIW, while my solitaire pendant is all WG, I do have a pendant that is WG and pave diamond that I almost always wear on a YG chain; and I actually like how the two-tone looks! So it’s not that two-tone pendants would look funny, but since you want a fixed pendant, I’d make sure the look goes with your overall aesthetic and other jewelry before committing to it. My studs are also set in WG, and if I ever get engaged I would want my ering to be in WG as well. So that’s why I wanted to ensure my solitaire pendant is WG!

I love mixing metals. Can’t wait to see your new necklace (and your other goodies)!

Here’s my mix:

Hi. First of all congratulations! I’m sure the stone is stunning IRL. I really like everything about @oldcutclubmember ’s pendant. Kind of makes me want one! I really like the mixed metals. I think a mix of YG basket and WG claw prongs would work, or all WG setting. Don’t know if that helps much. I don’t have any quality jewelry that is mixed metals. Good luck!

Ooh, what a gorgeous diamond! You have a marvelous collection of super ideal cuts, RwS! My vote is for white gold prongs on a yellow gold head.

All white head…Am not a fan of platinum patina so I like WG but a pendant probably would not get a patina as quickly as a ring.

Beautiful stone, btw!

Beautiful stone! I would go for an all white head if you want the stone to stay cool. I have a three prong white gold pendant and all you notice is the diamond, not the setting.

I have a G colored solitaire diamond set in your basic white gold rabbit ears setting, and I wear it on a yellow gold chain. Even with the visible rabbit ears, it still looks like just a white diamond on a yellow gold chain-the ears are not really visibly white, especially at the distance most people see it. Your setting will be even less visible. I personally prefer my diamonds set in white metal no matter what the shank or chain metal may be.

This is going to be gorgeous!! Can't wait to see it!

+ a billion!

Thanks everyone for your kind and helpful comments and pics! I'm studying each and every one of them and showing to my DH. (He's a late-bloomer when it comes to understanding what jewelry means to me, but now he's super into my sparkly journey...huzzah! And he's made this upgrade possible.)

I love the option shared , especially @Tonks. Here are some pendants I had saved. I think they would all look great two tone! Screenshot_20231202-081553.png

What a beautiful diamond!

I have a pendant like what you're describing: a rose gold chain with white gold three prong martini basket. Mine is from Brian Gavin, which looks the same as Whiteflash, with a .8 ct D stone. Does not look odd at all to have two tones. The white gold basket is not noticeable - only the diamond. Go for it!

@RunningwithScissors, I really like the examples that @Tonks and @DorotheaBrooke posted using rose gold. Have you thought about a platinum/white gold with rose gold combo?

So far as white gold versus platinum is concerned I personally prefer platinum for ease of maintenance (ie doesn’t need to be replated).

I also have a gold chain with 6 prong platinum setting. The stone is shallow and has body tint, so the platinum helps hide its imperfections. IMG_4020.jpeg

Looks lovely - what size is the diamond?
