Up for sale is a beautiful antique ruby and diamond eternity ring in 18k white gold. The ring is from England and marked 18ct (for 18k). There is another inscription on the other side, but I'm not sure of its significance -- it appears to say 996 (a serial number, perhaps?). The ring features twelve 2 point single cut diamonds and twelve 3 point square cut rubies in a box-set design. There is lovely engraving on the sides of the ring and milgrain in between the stones. No visible chips or nicks. Very good condition. The seller told me the ring is a size 6, but I think it's closer to a 5.75. I was also told it was 2mm wide, but I'm thinking it's more like 2.5mm. I purchased it to wear with my new (old) OEC mounting, but I've since found a band that works much better. If you're interested, please contact me through my listing on LT. Thanks!

Re: Art Deco Ruby and Diamond Eternity Ring

OMG Demelza, I love that! Why couldn't you be a 5.25? I've seen some lovely bands for sale by you. Can I dib this for Yenny? Because I think it'd be awesome with her new ring! :naughty:

Re: Art Deco Ruby and Diamond Eternity Ring

darn, I love it; I wish it was a size 5!

Re: Art Deco Ruby and Diamond Eternity Ring

Thanks, Tgal and Skippy!

I actually just went to the jewelry store to see what size it really is and it turns out it's a 5.5, not a 5.75. That explains why it feels a bit snug. The jeweler said it could go up to a 5.75 by scooping out a bit of the metal, but it's currently a 5.5.

ARGH, now it's closer to MY size.

I thought of you actually when the jeweler said it was a 5.5 -- I thought, hmmmm, wonder if it is small enough to fit Tgal now.... :wink2:

Re: Art Deco Ruby and Diamond Eternity Ring

Ha, it is. Actually with how hot it's been here, I wish my entire set was 5.5 instead of 5.25 as I've got the sausage thing going on here.

Just not sure if it would work aesthetically with my rings! (rise, width because it's a little bigger, etc.)

Would this be to wear with your 3-stone?

Yes...just to mix it up. Not sure I'd actually wear color, but I just LOVE red. ::)

Yeah, I've wanted a gemstone eternity ring for a long time and really like the splash of color to change things up. This band actually looks quite nice with my OEC -- here are a couple of crappy iphone pics -- but this other antique band I got yesterday works so much better and fits me better, too. The ruby one is hard to take off unless my hands are cold. I'm really more like a 5.75 and like my rings a bit loose.

That's gorgeous Dem, but I want to see what NEW band you bought that outshines this one, as I think it looks beautiful with your ring.

Well, I don't know that the new band itself necessarily outshines the ruby one, but it works better with my ring and fits my finger better. It's actually the all diamond vintage band in the first pic with the ruby ring. Nothing unusual, but it has a low profile and the single cuts are very bright. I haven't taken a picture of it yet with my OEC, but I'll post it when I do.

ETA If I had long fingers and the ruby band fit me better, I'd stack the two bands with my OEC. But, sadly, I don't have long fingers. If the ruby band doesn't sell, though, I might see about sizing it up so it's at least more comfy.

Re: Art Deco Ruby and Diamond Eternity Ring

I think both look great with your ring. I do love the ruby band though!!!!

Re: Art Deco Ruby and Diamond Eternity Ring

I realize this probably isn't the right place for this, but I finally took a picture of my new band with my OEC and I actually don't like it as much as I thought I would. The diamonds in my mounting are bead set and the stones are close together whereas the diamonds in my new band are box-set and far apart. Or maybe it's silly to care. I almost think the ruby band looks better, but at 5.5 it's just too snug for me to take on and off comfortably. And I'm worried about having the metal scooped out to increase the size since it will disrupt the engraving just a tad.

Re: Art Deco Ruby and Diamond Eternity Ring

Dem, take this with a grain of salt from someone who is enjoying diamond bands with her set but...

I like the ruby band better. It adds oomph and something special to the set. Not to say if you don't find the "perfect" diamond band, that wouldn't work, but I LOVE your set with that ruby band. I'm still coveting it for myself but just can't pull the trigger when I just don't know how it will look with my own ring.

But we *know* it looks great with yours!! If you can get it sized somehow, I say keep it!

Re: Art Deco Ruby and Diamond Eternity Ring

btw, my base band (the one that's milgrained/marquise) has diamonds spaced more far apart although visually it works because the diamonds are smaller than on my 3 stone mount so they end up being the same distance comparatively speaking. What makes it all work better is the eternity band which brings the look together, IMHO. The different rises and shapes/size is what makes a stack interesting. I I do think your new band looks great with your ring, but of course....

ya can't fight the anal. ;))

Demela has wonderful taste and compulsively buys bands. So she will always be able to keep her fellow PSers well stocked!

I agree that the ruby band adds something special. I can keep both from a financial perspective, but the problem with the ruby band is sizing. I am afraid to size it up just in case it doesn't work out -- not even sure what might happen, but it seems a bit risky to mess with an antique band like this; if nothing else, it will certainly alter the engraving on the sides.

Re: Art Deco Ruby and Diamond Eternity Ring

Demelza, sometimes we have the same jewelery brain. I should add this to SMTB but...I gave the DDH a detailed dream list of the setting with band to be made by Single Stone for my new/old 2.31 OEC/Tranny type stone. I just can't find anything in 3.5 ring size or close enough to it in the estate market and I think I have to get it made. But my dream band looks like a close cousin of this one, rubies and diamonds too! I thought it made for a nice companion with chunky facets too. Wish it fit me!

I wish it was your size as well. I can imagine finding a 3.5 would be quite difficult, but a problem I'd like to have.

Anyway, I'm still hoping to sell this band as I have concerns about getting it sized up, but that's still an option I'm considering if it doesn't sell. I'm going to take it to another jeweler on Tuesday and find out how difficult it would be.

Now I'm not so sure about my new diamond band! So hard to find something that looks just right and yet I don't like matchy-matchy.

Re: Art Deco Ruby and Diamond Eternity Ring

Ok. Love the ring. Have a habit of collecting band rings. Do,you know what color/clarity ,the diamonds are? Also, are the rubies clean? Are they a true red, or do they have a blue/purple hue?

Thanks.

Rocks

I totally understand the habit of collecting bands!!

No, I don't know the color or clarity of the diamonds. They are only 2 points each and appear white and clean to the naked eye. They are single cuts and, to my eye, they are bright and well cut. Admittedly, I know next to nothing about colored stones. The rubies look good to me. No visible chips or nicks and they are not noticeably included. As for color, I definitely don't see any blue. Some of the rubies are a deeper red than the others. Some might have a slight magenta color, but I'd say they are mostly red. Again, I am not experienced when it comes to colored stones, so really can't comment on how fine these rubies are. All I can say is that they look nice to the naked eye. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your prompt response. I need to give it some thought....matching really matters to me.

I certainly wouldn't say they are noticeably mismatched by any means. Without super close scrutiny, they all look very well-matched to my eye. It's only if you look very closely for differences that you might notice some. I realize everyone has different tolerances and this is an antique piece, so it's not "perfect", but I would say it's a very nicely made ring. Please let me know if you have any other questions!
