I just sold my old diamond and am now moving into a new project. I would like to set a blue sapphire into a Ritani shared diamond setting. The problem is that I only have $600.00 and a Pricesopers taste for quality gems. I would prefer untreated and a beautiful royal blue color. I think the setting accomodates a one carat stone. I know they can remove the head and put a new one in because it's already been done. I had the head changed from the one carat to a 1.25 head.

I know 600 dollars is not enough for the highest of qualities so I may have to:

1. get heat treated (I really don't want to but will if that's the only way to get a great color)
2. set an oval or cushion east to west if it's possible to get to a one carat width in the setting. You can't go too small or you jeopardize the structural integrity of the setting, right?

Here's a couple of options i was thinking but I am way open to suggestions:

Any help would be greatly appreciated

This looks to be a very nice stone from AJS:

It is a bit smaller than 1 carat diamond which I will guesstimate at 6.5 mm but coloured gemstones are frequently more bottom heavy so a 1 carat sapphire may or may not fit your setting. I choose a round stone since your setting looks like it is meant for a round stone.

The cutting on the NSC stone is really nasty. None of the table facets are even, the girdle is totally lopsided, etc. If you set the stone, either the table will not be level, or your prongs will have to be uneven in order to get a level table surface. I would NOT recommend that sapphire.

That said, there are others who will buy based on just colour. For me, it has to be the whole package. Colour AND cut because a well cut stone will be very lively.

I''m looking for an oval or a cushion or the stone will have to be around 1.25 carat. I had the setting changed a few years ago from a 1 carat to 1.25 carat head.

Chrono, I love love love that stone, but I think it''s a tad too small for the setting. Here''s one I''m looking at:

Gotcha! I was confused and thought you wanted to stick with a round since the picture shows a round center stone. Ovals and cushions are far easier to find. This blue sapphire from AJS has nice colour. There is a window though so I don''t know if you can overlook that.

This one has more of an odd shape: a cross between an oval and a cushion. The colour looks darker than the previous AJS stone and the window is smaller. My preference is still the other stone (even though the window is larger because the colour is much better, at least on my monitor). Write Arnold or Rung an email and ask. They will also provide you with additional photos to help you decide.
