Hello! I posted a poll recently gathering thoughts on whether I should have my diamond reset a little higher -- thanks everyone for your input! The poll results were pretty close, but the vote to set higher won by 6. A couple strong comments for Team Low Set which I loved and made my decision so tough!
I'm still somewhat undecided on setting the stone higher or lower, thinking slightly higher, but maybe just a new head/prongs would remedy the appearance.. I have decided to go ahead and have a new ring made by DK, with a couple of tweaks to my current one (to reiterate, I love it very much).
I'd greatly appreciate some more input on some of the design details! I'm nitpicky as can be, but often can't figure out what exactly I'm nitpicking, and I'm terrible at visualizing, I need already-done pics.
Here's my ring now - a 6 prong knife edge with stone set low, made by David Klass.
I've been trying to find a bigger diamond band for a year, and many of them seem to overpower my ER (to my eye/preference, anyway). I prefer the e-ring to have more depth than my wedding band, which means I can only choose very low profile bands. So the main change I'd like to make is to hopefully remedy that issue.
Tweaks I want to make:
1. extend the shank depth/thickness outward a little (maybe just sides and bottom?), so that it will extend past the thickness of most bands I'd pair with the soli - but how much exactly, in mm?
2. scoot the head down a smidge / have the shoulders meet the prongs a touch higher, like the og Tiffany and others
3. there's something about the donut that I can't put my finger on - but think I might like to do something different there. Should it be narrower? Maybe point #2 would take care of it, or maybe changing the slope of the prongs / making them less bowed would help? I wouldn't mind a bigger donut or one that sticks out further, as I like to have a gap between the e ring and wedding band.
4. the head / prongs - I like the idea of setting the stone a little higher so it's a little less cupped looking, but at the same time I don't want to go too high - I do like the prongs extending more outwards than upwards. not sure how to handle this or how it will look with my size stone (1.67 ct / 7.67mm) - maybe it works better with larger stones. I mostly want mine to look a bit less bowed than they are now
As I was studying every solitaire in existence once again, just to make sure I don't want a completely different style (I do also love a 4 prong cathedral like Victor Canera's classic cathedral), I kept finding myself drawn to these vintage Tiffany solitaires. Gosh I LOVE this (except I want my knife edge shank).
But I can't do this exact style. It's so close to the finger and I don't want to be even more limited with band pairing than I've been already. I am hoping I can incorporate those slimmer or more delicate - looking prongs, though. They seem to have a much bigger space in between those bottom bits and I love how that looks... and perhaps the wider donut - but will that work? Will a bigger donut be weird on top of a higher / built-up base? I've tried photoshopping with no luck and I just can't envision this. On the other hand I'm wondering is it actually bigger than the donut I have now, or is it an illusion because it's so low and open underneath?
Here are a couple examples of modern ones I like by Tiffany and Maytal Hannah.
I don't want a Vatche U113 or dupe - I love the original Tiffany's taper to wider at the shoulder, rather than the same width all around on the shank
If anyone has any input / experience / insights before I send my somewhat vague requests to DK, please share! TIA :- )
