After months of research about diamonds, for my engagement ring I chose a 0.91ct, D, VS1, Triple excellent diamond with a GIA certificate. When I found the HCA tool, I personally placed a fair bit of value on it as we were buying blind (with a great returns policy) and I wanted to know how sparkly my diamond would be. The diamond I chose scored 0.7 and although I was at first really happy with this, I became a bit worried when I read that "most people prefer diamonds that score between 1-2" - especially as I couldn't find a clear explanation as to why this was the case.
Well, last night my fiancé (it will take a while to get used to calling him that!) presented me with my ring and the diamond is absolutely stunning. I wanted to talk a little about how it performs in terms of sparkle in case there are others wondering if they should be avoiding diamonds that score between 0-1.
It definitely sparkles more at arms length than it does when you hold it right up to your face, but I figure that this is a good thing as very few people will be allowed to shove my diamond in front of their noses! And although I had read to expect more brilliance than fire in a diamond scoring 0.7, almost every single sparkle that comes out of it is a beautiful prism of multi-coloured light.
The diamond is a D coloured stone, so it is very white, so much so that it almost makes the platinum look tinted! Now and then, out of the corner of your eye, it flashes a beam of white light at you which is so bright, it's almost like somebody pointing a laser at you! You can actually see the ray of light leaving the diamond and stretching out before you. It does this even in what I would call "normal" lighting conditions, and I have never seen a diamond which could produce such dazzling light before, even in a spotlit jewellers. All the diamonds I have looked at have little sparkles but these big flashes of light are something new to me!
With every single movement of my hand, no matter how big or small, the diamond dances with fire and brilliance and does all it can to catch your eye. I'm still not entirely sure why "most people prefer diamonds that score between 1-2", but I can't imagine another diamond in the world looking more beautiful.
Now you are all going to tell me to post pics... and I would LOVE to... but the ring was very slightly too big and has gone to be resized (from an H to a G 1/2). When I get my hands on it again, I will be taking lots of photos to show off my bling
