"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in your shoe"... or so the saying goes.

My question... how "old" must an article be before qualifying as "something old"?

I am not sure if there is a specific time frame, you could probably google it or email a bridal mag. I think maybe one generation minimum, like your mom''s pearls or something, then of course grandmother and great grandmother too, but something from your mom or aunt could be okay!!!

I had new blue underwear and that''s about it. I didn''t borrow anything or have anything old unless you count the shoes which I bought for the wedding like a year ahead of time.

My old borrowed and Blue item are all the same thing - My Nan used to wear this blue scarf over her hair when it would rain - so i am using tha scarf to wrap my bouquet in - it''s old, I borrowed it a loooong time ago and never gave it back, and it''s blue!!

Plus, my Nan passed away, so it''s so nice to have her as part of the ceremony!!

im just going to wear some old jewelery...old for me anyway, i have had it for about 5 years. i am still trying to figure out the borrowed and blue. Everything else i have is brand new so got that covered!

I think diamondfan has the right idea... honestly, its probably personal preferance!

My Old: Pearls from mother, diamonds in w-band, six pence, necklace i got for HS graduation (tucked into my bra), diamond stud earrings from then-BF
My New: Dress, veil, shoes
My Borrowed: Pearls, six pence
My Blue: Flowers, hankie with blue embrodery, and my toe nails!
and i had a six pence in my shoe!

I have a diamond necklace that my mum gave to me ( its only about 5 years old)....Im going to borrow some jewellery from my mother in law ( to be) and for the something blue ( im thinking a garter or underwear?)...I didnt know about the six cence...where would I get one of those from? does 5 cence and 1 penny count?

What is a sixpence?

I am having trauma after reading this because my great aunt gave me a white gold cameo with two tiny emeralds and some tiny diamonds in it that belonged to my great grandmother. I have moved a zillion times since and I swear that I gave it to my mom to hold on to, but she says she doesn''t have it, and I remember looking for it after the first move almost 5 years ago and I couldn''t find it anywhere. I have a feeling that my roomate''s friend may have "borrowed" it as she did with some of my clothes. I feel so bad about it because first of all it was/is gorgeous, and secondly my great aunt asked me about it at my cousin''s wedding and told me that my great grandmother wore it in her wedding. It''s a very delicate piece so maybe I will have to go through my mom''s stuff and see if I can dig it up!

I totally didn''t answer the question, sorry I''m a stream-of-conscious typer...

I personally feel that something "old" can be anything that has sentimental value, regardless of how old it is...

Awww, Dazedland, I would certainly be upset to think something that special were missing. Keeping fingers crossed that you find it.

Sixpence is an English coin and legend says "if bride who wears one in her left shoe on her wedding day, her marriage will be blessed with wealth and prosperity." I''m not supertitious, but I am sentimental and like the idea of following tradition. They''re pretty easy to find, I would check your local bridal salon if you''re interested.

Everything I''ve read pretty much said that the "something old" is generally anything given to you by someone who has been happily married for many years. Usually something they had in their wedding.
