Boyfriend and I just bought our perfect stone from Wild Fish (http://www.wildfishgems.com/inc/sdetail/6821) and as we''re waiting for the wire to clear and our stone to arrive, we''ve been looking at settings. I saw this one in SMTR and we both agree it''s perfect:

So here''s my question... is a sapphire going to be hard enough/sturdy enough to sit in a setting like this? We love that the stone is so exposed to light, but I''m afraid it will get chipped or dislodged or something. So, long-time sapphire owners, what do you think? Feel free to weigh in on the stone, too. As soon as it arrives we''ll probably take it to an appraiser just to make sure it is what we think it is (awesome. :) ). But I''d love to hear any thoughts from the real experts!

This website has been so informative as we''ve gone through our search. Even if I don''t get any responses, ya''ll have been amazing. Thanks.

I think it will be fine as long as you''re careful wearing it. Don''t bang it around, wear it to the gym, etc. And insure it!

You''ll have to be careful with it. Whether it''s a diamond or a sapphire, that band is thin. And as neatfreak said insure it. Sappphire is a sturdy gem, a 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness. If I were you I''d make the shank a tad thicker, but that''s up to you. It''s a lovely setting!!! You must be very excited!!

I''d set the stone as low as possible to minimize knocking on stuff. This is when you are most likely to chip the girdle. I definitely agree about insuring the ring, but I would definitely consider a setting like this. It''s too gorgeous not to!

What a lovely sapphire. I wear sapphires a lot and have not had any issues. I take any of my rings off when I am going to be doing something that might be rough on it. I can''t wait to see your ring.

Thanks for all the advice. Yes, insurance will DEFINITELY be happening. It''s a huge purchase for us.

Anyway.. we''ll probably go the custom route, because I also want the stone to sit a little lower (as you suggest). It will make me feel a lot better about wearing it -- even though I plan to take it off when I do anything remotely physical.

Will definitely post pictures when we have a finished product! It may be a while.. but we''re excited.
