I've always been a class clown.
I was so bad that at the end of the fourth grade, they failed me ... or I guess I failed myself.
(How's that for taking personal responsibility?)

If my family had stayed in that city/county/state they would have made me repeat 4th grade.

But we moved to a different state and my parents got away with registering me for 5th grade.

my cousin had to repeat standard 4 (last year of primary school
she was pretty thick

They should have moved to California? LOL :lol-2:

FWIW here's how the US rolled back when I was in school.;))

Preschool (I didn't go) actually I don't know whether preschool even exited back in my day, maybe because there were so many stay at home moms, yes moms. :-o:eek2::eek-2::oops2:o_O:sick::snooty::wall::boohoo::nono::errrr::naughty:

Kindergarten - started at age 5 or so
Grades 1-6 grammar school
7 & 8 Junior High
9-12 High School

I belive it's different now.

Grades K through 4 I was in an expensive private school.
5-12 I was in public school.

I started nursery school at age 4
Kindergarden at age 5
Public school through HS
I skipped grade 7 in Jr HS (JR HS was grades 6-8)
High School was grades 9-12
I was 16 when I entered college and did college in three years
So always the youngest in my class
Graduated 4 year OD school at age 23
Now it's weird because it's almost the opposite.
I now am usually the oldest (with the exception of my DH) in the room
I admit I preferred being the youngest
In my head I am still young
My body says otherwise
When I was young I would look at old people and thought they're old
Now I get it. They are still young in their heads.
It's true
If you are still young
Just wait and see
My one piece of advice
ENJOY every moment that you can
Appreciate every single experience and day
Take nothing for granted...nothing
Good health is a blessing
Savor your youth
It will serve you well when you are older

"You can't help getting older, but you don't have to get old."

"A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams."

"Cherish all your happy moments; they make a fine cushion for old age."

"Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late."

Started kindergarten at 4.
Had my child just before turning 40.

Sometimes early, sometimes late.

Before first grade I lived in a country that had two years of kindergarten, starting at age 4. I was there until January in my second year, when my family moved to the states… and we still had not learned our ABC’s! In other words, the kindergarten programs there didn’t (at that time) focus on academic skills as much as social skills and learning generally. Didn’t hurt me a bit as I progressed through 1-6 etc. here in the States.

Kenny, my perspective may be skewed because we my family was not exactly middle class for our first decade or so in the States, but it seems to me that pre-school wasn’t really a thing until the advent of head start programs in the mid-late 60’s. As you noted, many women were still working at home then, and at least some of those who worked outside of the house brought paid women in their neighborhoods to watch their kids while they worked, in settings that were more akin to baby-sitting than pre-school. But that was just the view from my tiny slice of the world.

BTW except for the 1 1/2 years of two kindergarten my academic progression was much like yours. Except for that fleeing the state to avoid being held back thing, that is. ;-)

And I respect and appreciate the “class clowns” of the far more now than I did when I was a kid - especially the ones who couldn’t help but cut up challenge the need for order because that was their nature. As one who was way too focused on being good and doing well, I have to admit I rather envy them.

I went to nursery school at 3, kindergarten at 4 and first grade at 5. Elementary was grades 1-6, then junior high which was 7-9. High school was 10-12 but I skipped 12th grade and started college at 16. Dropped out after the first year, went back the next year and graduated at 21. Moved with my then husband for him to go to med school and I waited a year taking some classes, before starting law school. Wanted to graduate at the same time so we could leave that city. I was 25 when I graduated at that point. I guess I didn't rush after getting out of high school early, and I'm glad about that.
