I need some suggestions for bridal hair and makeup in the Ann Arbor/Metro-Detroit area.

Who did you use or are you using?

Thanks!

I got my hair and make-up done at Premier Salon at Macy''s. I don;t know if you have a favorite salon to go to... Do you have a Macy''s or Nordstrom near you? Any of those salons should be good. Or a Heidi''s salon at the mall? I got my hair done there for prom and my make-up at MAC.

i went to salon innovations in northville, but primarily because the owner (donna t.) is one of only three people that has cut my hair since i was two (the other two being me and my sister and the later was an sore accident when I was only 4

). I also had one of the girls there do my makeup (i'm pretty sure there is only one that does it), and I was really happy with it. I think the trial was $40, the day of hair was $60 and makeup was another $45? they do nails and stuff there too. it's not exactly super posh, but it's nice, clean, friendly and i think the stylists are great. you've seen our pictures, no ?

they did everyone in our party except my tall bridesmaids :)

ETA: how's the planning coming? are you finding good vendors??

I just got my makeup done at the Mac store (NOT counter) at Somerset. It''s on the "expensive" side of the skywalk on the 2nd floor.

Go to the bald, sort of older guy there. He is FABULOUS! He did mine to teach me how to do engagement pics, and when I walked in he had just finished a bride on the way to her wedding! It was a Saturday morning.

Honestly, my makeup has never looked so good. I would at least go and tell him you''re experimenting with wedding looks, and would he help you come up with some ideas? He would be happy to help. He really knows what he''s doing, and is fun :)

I will be back there this weekend to return something, so I''ll find out his name for ya!

I used Bridal Beauty on Location - Jess was the particular stylist we ended up with. My first hair trial didn't go so well - mostly because the photos I took were of a rather tricky style that really didn't work well on me. However, when I asked about doing a second trial, they apologized and offered to do it for free. I gave her a bit more freedom to see what she would come up with, and it worked out great. The actual day-of, Jess came to the hotel (Campus Inn) and did my hair and makeup, my MIL's makeup, and the hair of 3 of my 4 bridesmaids (the 4th has short hair). We all looked and felt amazing, and our hair withstood the humidity (it POURED all day) and dancing all night. I also LOVED the makeup she did for me - and my eye makeup completely survived me crying during the ceremony. You can see photos of me and my bridesmaids in my old wedding thread: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/ladyciels-pro-wedding-photos.97632/ She wasn't quite done with my eye makeup in one of the first close up shots where I'm laughing, so the eyeliner looks a little heavy compared to the rest of it.

ETA: I only drop into BWW on occasion, so I've seen your name but never realized you were in A2. I just went back to your dress thread, and the shop in those photos is where I found my dress. I didn't buy it from there, though. (got it for half the price from Pearl's Place). If you need/want any vendor suggestions, just ask!

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys! I''m just weary of picking a place based on limited online reviews. I''d rather hear them from PS people, because it''s easier to trust your judgment.

Meresal: Thanks! That website will be a good resource for me not only for hair, but other stuff too. Awesome!

Tuckins: I do have a Macy''s, but not a Nordstroms... that''s 30 minutes away in Novi. I''m in A2, and I don''t think we have a Heidi''s here either, unfortunately.

Planning is going well Mimzy! Even on short notice, we got Melissa to do our photography and we''re *very* excited!

leeNY: Your comment made me laugh about the "expensive" side of Somerset. I thought I was the only broke @$$ who called it that!

ladyciel: I saw them online and thought I might see if they''re available! I just kind of wanted to hear from someone "real" that had used them. The place that you saw in the photos where I shopped left a bad taste in my mouth. I had planned on going back there again at 6 on a Tuesday, and the girl working said "We close at 7. Just so you know, my manager hates staying late. So you should make it quick."

Rude much? I mean, I realize you don''t want to stay late, no one does, but you put a smile on your face anyway, especially if you own the place! Off to stalk your wedding thread...

Yeah, I wasn't too fond of that shop, either. They offered to sell me the sample at a discount since it was my size, but I wasn't too impressed with their offer. I was still deciding between that dress and one from Mimi's, so I said I'd have to think about it. In the end I realized I DID want that dress, but I also wanted some negotiating power. I had plenty of time to order, so I was only going to take the sample if the deal was worth it. Well, I went price hunting to see what I could find, and when Pearl's Place told me a little over 500 instead of 1100 the shop wanted (for new), I almost dropped the phone. No brainer, there.

I don't know which shop you ended up getting your dress from, but do you need alterations other than the privacy panel? It's quite a drive, but I heard about Hannah Ayar from the knot boards, and she is at least as amazing as everyone claims. Crazy cheap, ridiculously talented, and very considerate. She knew I was driving the hour from A2, so she managed to do my dress in just 2 trips. On the first she pinned the bodice and cut the hem (freehand while I was wearing the dress...a little scary, but in the end it was perfect), and she set aside extra time for my 2nd visit so on the chance there would be anything needing adjustment she could do it while I waited. It was perfect after just that one fitting, though, and she steamed the dress and packed it up for me while I waited.

Sorry, I know you didn't ask, but on the chance you'll find it helpful, our other vendors...
DJ - Marc LaRochelle - we hired him while he was still working as his own company (I think he's now with Nite and Day or something like that), and he was perfect. He listened to all of our wants/dislikes, and as an MC he was a great balance of respectful and fun. The lights made for some great photos, too.

Flowers - Chelsea Flower Shop - I worked with Nobuko, and she was a very sweet lady. She nailed my bouquet right on the head - I couldn't have made it any more like what I wanted if I tried. Everything else....the color ended up a little more purple than I wanted - I was thinking more plum-burgundy than purple - but I think that was in part my fault. I was a little hands off by the time I got to flowers because I was just sick of planning. However, their prices were waaaaay below anywhere else once we took delivery charges into account.

Day-of coordinator - hiring one was the smartest thing we did. It let me relax and not worry about anything going wrong. It also meant vendors with questions/emergencies had somebody other than me, my bridal party, or my family, to contact if need be. We used TwoFoot Creative, but Ana herself was already booked for our date. However, she had an assistant, Nicola, who was more of an understudy learning the ropes in the US compared to the UK where she grew up and used to do event planning. Nicola and another assistant actually did our coordination, though Ana ran all of our prep meetings.

Cake - Bakeshop wedding cakes, now at the Jefferson Market. MOST DELICIOUS CAKE EVER. Go taste it. Seriously. If you've never been to the Jefferson Market since it reopened (she was in negotiations to buy it when we first met with her), it's worth the visit for some lunch/dessert. She was also really helpful and let us borrow a cake stand from her with nothing more than a refundable deposit.

I have to run for the time being, but good luck with planning!

ETA: Real quick - The girls and I got our nails done at the place in the Colonade Plaza on Eisenhower (between the mall and Ann Arbor-Saline), and they did a GREAT job for a really fair price.
