she heard it on the local news.

That spray is nasty stuff. In our area, they are supposed to announce when they are going to spray, so that people can be indoors and keep their windows shut. Doesn''t your AC have any kind of filtration on it? Ours does. When we built this house, my hubby made sure that we had so many envorionmental protections on this house, I swear we will probably survive anything short of nuclear holocaust!

We have an air filtration system on our AC and heating units, we have a positive pressure air pump thingy to prevent RADON gas, we have smoke/carbon monoxide sensors, we have lightening prevention antennas on our roof that make us look like we belong to a spy sattelite network, we have some kind of special pumps to keep ground water from backing up into our plumbing. WHEW! I didn''t even get to do some of my decorating upgrades when we built this house, because we went so over budget on the safety stuff. But in the end, I guess it was worth it. Some of the stuff would have cost way more to have installed it after the house was built, and we got it done much cheaper by integrating the stuff when the house was constructed. We also have some kind of special recirculating vents on our AC and heating system that allows us to choose the option of either recirculating the air inside the house, or using fresh air from the outside. If the skeeter sprayers come by our neighborhood, we can close the windows and flip the switches and keep the spray from being sucked into our ventilation system.

DF, my parents are in the central valley and have had birds dropping dead at the rate of about 2 per week all summer....west nile was identified when they could finally get someone out to check! all this talk about notifying the proper authorities was a nightmare for my parents. and no one is spraying........

What kinds of birds are infected with West Nile in other parts of the country? In Illinois, it''s mostly been crows and graekels, but lately they''ve found some robins that have been infected. I feed the birds, and have several bird feeders in my yard. I get kind of nervous, like maybe I shouldn''t be attracting birds to my area. But the birds are so nice to have around. We love the birdsongs, and they do eat a lot of mosquitos, spiders, flies, and other pesky bugs. The only saving grace around here this summer is that it''s been very hot and dry, so we haven''t had much stagnant water for the mosquitos to breed in, and the mosquito population in central Illinois has been much lower than normal.

They just sprayed by us last weekend. Personally, I think that while it is kind of gross, it is a necessary evil. But it''s personal for me, my uncle was one of the first to be infected with west nile a few years ago when this whole thing became a huge issue. He wound up in a coma for awhile, he was VERY sick. After that, he was never the same. It basically shut down his immune system and after 3 years of being alternately well and very sick, he passed away this past January. He was only in his 60''s. It was very sad and I still blame west nile for it all. So I''m happy with the spraying, but I can see how it would make some people upset. They should notify before spraying, we didn''t even know until the truck came by, spewing chemicals into the air.....

They''ve been spraying here in Sacramento this week. We''ve been told that it''s all perfectly harmless, but "close your windows, don''t use your air conditioning, keep your pets in and stay inside." Not too comforting for something that''s "perfectly harmless." What I''m wondering is what affect this has on swimming pools? Will my pool have to be drained due to a poisonous scum on the surface? I suppose it could be worse. The could have decided to spray for my wedding which will be in two weeks in my back yard.

HI:

We have had identified cases of West Nile in our province--nasty business.

cheers--Sharon

Here in Nc... we have a special relationship with the mosiquitos.. they carry the viruses and grow big enough to carry awqay from children and we spray to kill them... and spray and spray and spray. Mosquitos are nasty bugger... but we have on our AC and screens in windows work well.

Here is what we practice.. and we keep safe... Do not go out at dusk and dawn.. these are when they are most actice. Wear light colored clothing if you have to go out, stay awy from dark clothes. Pour out any standing water that you may have around you. Mosquitos spend their lives within 100 feet of where they are born. If you are out in the evening.. deet is a good idea... wear long pants and shirts if you must be in tall grass.

There is no need to panic.. just to be smart. BTW.. Mosquitos...LOVE hot places..... We keep the AC on in the summer which makes the Mos... fly up to the celiing should any find a way to steal inside when you have the door opening and shutting. At that time... a rolled magazine or newpaper is the best... or you can just squish them

Don''t let the median and hype getcha paranoid.

Some people can carry WNV and not be effected by it. it is most dangerous to the elderly and small children. Their immune systems are weaker.

additionally, it is the night time mosquitos, not the day ones, that carry west nile....so the no outside from dusk to dawn is excellent advice....and you''re safer from vampires that way, too!
