Hi all -

Is it possible to search for stones for an engagement ring by country of origin? My girlfriend''s family is Sri Lankan and i know it would be special for her if the primary stone originated from there. I had read that the descriptor ceylon sapphire refers to an aspect of the color and not the stones origin. When something is listed as being of "Origin: Ceylon" does that mean where the stone was found, or does it describe an intrinsic quality of the stone?

I''m not committed to a particular type of stone yet (and am open to suggestions) but it seems a type of corundum might suit me best. Initially I am leaning toward blue sapphire (although the padparadschas are really beautiful!). This is a little off topic but generally speaking do people feel that for a colored engagement ring it is appropriate for the man to pick it out entirely or should I consult with her first? I know she prefers a non-diamond engagement ring but I don''t know what color she would most prefer.

Thanks for the advice.

I would consult with her and see what color sapphire she would like. A couple of ladies here have beautiful padparadscha sapphire engagement rings.

It''s a lovely idea to used a stone from your fiance''s homeland in her engagement ring. And very lucky that you''ll have so many beautiful stones to choose from, since she''s from Sri Lanka! It would also be nice if you could find a way to incorporate a small stone from Sri Lanka into your own ring, perhaps as a "secret stone."

they say it''s very hard to actually find out the country of origin since the neighboring borders are so close. They don''t even tell you for certain on a AGTA report or any others because they don''t want to be held liable, but some experts can tell by the inclusions in the stone and color. Don''t let the origin of the stone be a deciding factor, if it''s a beautiful color the idea of choosing a stone from her home country is there.... that''s what matters. Just to fore-warn you, because I''ve just went through the buying stone process. There''s a lot of uncertainty when buying colored stones. Unlike diamonds where you can tell the jeweler what you want and it''s all on a grading scale, gem stones are subjective and there can be a lot of searching involved to get the right stone you envisioned. So, in the end, country of origin becomes less on the priority list, unless you and one of those lucky ones with unlimited budget and find the right stone in the first shot.

Looking forward to following your ering story.love the sentiment..
