Okay so... APPARENTLY something has happened to all my flatware. Now what exactly that is? I''m not sure... although I suspect that FI used his mother''s dishwasher detergent which has citrus and other harmful rust causing corosives in it on my flatware-- probably because he ran out of the stuff I buy and borrowed hers (we our house is next door to hers). It was all icked up and rusted so FI threw it out and called me to say, "You wanted to get new flatware right?"

Yes.

When I registered.

For STERLING.

So now... as if the deductable from my accident, the moving expenses... not to mention wedding and re-setting costs aren''t bad enough. I need new freaking flatware before we move here.

Obligatory bi!ching is over....

SO... I''m looking for GOOD and INEXPENSIVE. I want 12 place settings for about 120-140 bucks... 16 place setings for up to $180.

I had Gorham Fairview because it looked like Fairfax (sterling I want) and was a good deal at the time. I''ve had some other spotting problems with it though... so I''m thinking...Yamazaki this time round.

Anyone have any of their flatware? Heard of any problems with it?

I''m debating between Bolo or Belgrove (shiny version of Bolo). But I don''t really care for the design... mostly I''m considering them because they''ve gotten good reviews, I''ve seen them in person and know they are nice heavy pieces... and are not prone to rusting (reviews again).

I''m also considering Clairton because I like the pattern better and its a REALLY good price... but I''m wary of it as it''s a new design and I don''t know how it''s going to perform.

I like Solari too, because I want a modern/contemporary design this time and of these choices it''s pattern most appeals to me. But it''s got rust warnings in its reviews.

Then there is Epoch is which has been around a while and is modern although more square than I wanted... it''s a great deal though... especially for the 16 person set for 150 bucks.

Any thoughts?

Which of these patterns do you like most?

I like the yamakazi solari the best, but I don''t know how much my opinion counts since my flatware is all mix and match from garage sales that I paid probably about $5 for (and I have enough to serve probably 30 lol). I honestly hadn''t even though about registering for silverware. I guess I should though so I can have matching stuff if we have people over.

Ooh, I love the Bolo.

Those are all really nice, but have you checked out Oneida? I''ve had Oneida''s tribeca for 7 years and never had a problem with it rusting, tarnishing, or anything problematic. I didn''t even plan to replace it but I wasn''t able to register for Sterling (didn''t like any of the available patterns in the stores we chose) so I picked a fresh Reed and Barton pattern for our registry, but I plan to use both.

Oneida. com has some really nice modern patterns and some of them are discounted significantly on that site.

I second the recommendation for Oneida. I''ve had my Oneida Colonial Boston for over 10 years and it still looks very nice. Of the ones you''ve listed above, I like the Bolo the best.

Love my Oneida too...I think my pattern is called "Flight" and I''ve had it since college (I used to be able to find it at Target). I just found it again last year at Kohl''s and picked up more because I like it so much. It''s never tarnished or gotten spots from the dishwasher, which is more than I can say for some expensive stainless knife sets we received when we got married.

Okay... so for the Onieda folks... here are the ones in budget (I really liked a few that were WAY out of budget...

Moda:

Satin Sand Dune-- though I'm not sure of the whole Satin thing but it doesn't look like the regular Sand Dune is available as anything but open stock: http://www.oneida.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.detail/_p/Satin-Sand-Dune/productID/efb4e533-d3ad-4141-b238-70e43649efa8/categoryID/68d0271b-6300-4227-ad66-5a6c6b87e483

I can also strech the budget to 200 for 16 place settings of this set.

Moda!

I''ve been using and abusing antique silverplate flatware for the past 20 years without ever having to worry about rust or corrosion. It''s my everyday flatware and it''s just stored in an unlined silverware drawer, so individual pieces do require an occasional polish (but overall less than once a year, I think.)

There are lots of old fairly clean art deco patterns (introduced in from 1910-1930) and lots of very clean contemporary patterns introduced after that that are now being sold by kids of the original owners. Many sets are in very good shape because they were kept in storage and used only on special occasions. I recently bought a set with 14 7-piece place settings, with a storage box and service pieces, for less than $300. The only real caution is that patterns that factory-added black area (fake oxidation) should not go in superhot dishwashers, since the very hot wash settings can remove this feature.

Anyhow, here''s my pattern: http://cgi.ebay.com/Lovely-141-Piece-Silverplate-Flatware-Set-Morning-Star_W0QQitemZ110054043344QQihZ001QQcategoryZ20102QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem,

And you''re more of a stainless girl, go with the Moda!

That''s strange that your flatware rusted all of the sudden!? I''ve never heard of that happening. And I buy the cheapest of dishwasher detergents!

I think I''d choose the Bolo or the Epoch. They look like they''d be comfortable to eat with. Plus, they''re kind of modern, but not too modern where they aren''t classic.

I bought my flatware from a Dansk outlet clearance sale (Silhouette). I got a 8 4 piece place settings, plus 8 extra teaspoons, 8 iced tea spoons, 8 grapefruit spoons, and a set of 5 serving pieces for around $60, I think. I picked up matching steak knives, cocktail forks, hors d''ouerve knives, and an extra set of serving pieces at TJ Maxx when I saw them there, too. It''s a very simple pattern, but comfortable.

I like the Moda. That''s the one I actually thought you''d like but didn''t want to sway your decision. If you get an open stock Oneida pattern, you''ll have a good opportunity later to buy more as needed. Get as many place settings as you can afford now, then finish it off when you can. I started with a service for 8, then later found more of my pattern on overstock actually, so I bought another service for 8, then added the serving pieces and iced tea spoons. You''ll have good flatware for a long time, it''s worth the investment.

I have a satin set from Oneida and I really like the look and feel. Only the handle part is satin, the umm... eating part is shiney so it cleans up just fine. I would recommend checking out your local Marshalls or Filene''s basement, they always seem to have flatware, the same as you''d get at Macys or something and it''s seriously marked down. I think the set we have (it was a gift, so I''m not sure, but it was from Marshalls) was something ridiculous like $18/set for 4.

I did a quick google search on the Moda and Dillards has the 65 piece set for $129. That''s $70 less than Oneida.com! Go to www.dillards.com.

ikitchen.com and target.com both have the Tortola for about $10 less than Oneida.com

We have Oneida and we love it. We haven''t had a single problem with it (and we are not at all cautious about what kind of dishwasher detergent we use). This is the one we have. It''s just a little over your price range, but still a great deal. It is nice and heavy for him but still not too big for me. I would definitely recommend going with Oneida.

.
Yeah. He''s still not talking. Rusting is the only thing I could think of that could cause ALL of it to be thrown out. Of course... even that begs the question... why were 100 something pieces of flatware in the dishwasher all at once?

Okay... so Oneida is getting rave PS reviews. SO I''m MUCH inclined to go with Oneida.

And sumbrides find of 65 peice set for 130 bucks is a FABULOUS!!! Thank you Sumbride.

So... I''m fairly inclined to go with Oneida... and leaning toward the Moda.

I wonder if maybe he left it to soak... for like, weeks? I could see a big old bowl full of flatware in water in the sink, him adding to it as he went along... and maybe adding in a corosive cleanser? You''re in CA, he''s in NJ right now, right? Maybe he can''t be trusted to do the dishes? I have to remind my FI that "Kaboom" is not an appropriate multi-purpose cleaner... AFTER he bleached a spot on the linoleum floor in the basement. Just make sure he doesn''t do this to your new flatware!

Yea! for the Oneida! You''ll be happy with it!

Monarch--We are flatware twins. I have Oneida FLIGHT too. There used to be a more expensive version that looked the same but went by a different name.

I have had my set since 1993 and absolutely no problems. My mom has a different Oneida pattern that she has had for over 20 years now and it still looks great.

Stainless flatware rusts? That''s news to me!
I''ve got Reed and Barton Longwood Matte, and I like it so much I''m not going to bother registering for silver.

I say go to target and get some cheap flatware to hold you over until your wedding, and register for some really really nice stainless flatware that can do double duty as your every-day stuff and your company silverware.

Hey Indie - Longwood Matte is the flatware I picked on my registry last weekend! We''ll be flatware twins!!! I actually chose it instead of sterling since they only had frou-frou rose bedecked sterling.

Something sounds fishy. Did you see the flatware? I can''t imagine it couldn''t have been polished up. But whatever, Oneida all the way. One thing to think about is plain settings tend to get scratched and the scratches are very noticible if there is no pattern to speak of. Cosco often has some oneida for good prices and they also have outlets arounds, depending on where you live.

i know you entertain and i know you are a housewares junkie. I also understand why you need 16 place settings ha ha.

I am concerned about the "weight" of the pieces you posted. they look flimsy. Can you go to a local department store and see how they weigh and feel? will they bend under pressure?

i have gorham ribbon edge and it is indestructible.

i think he did something to your flatware. bleach?

Gypsy, I was thinking about the issue with your silverware and what would have made it ALL go bad at once. Then I remembered the one discolored Oneida knife that I have.....It has a slighly orangish tinge to it that seems like rust but doesn't scrape off or look porous like rust. It got discolored when I put it in the dishwasher next to a sterling silver serving spoon. If you mix silver and stainless in the dishwasher some chemical reaction can happen to the stainless. I normally don't ever put my silver serving pieces in the dishwasher but I had help loading the dishwasher one holiday. The 2 pieces were actually touching each other. If there was a lot of silver mixed in with your stainless I could see how everything would look ruined. Just a thought.

HI Lady K... Yeah, I would REALLY prefer 16 place settings as I do entertain. And I am a housewares junkie! I'm also a matchy matchy junky... I don't like mismatched plates or mismatched silverware. Bugs the crap out of me... I'm worried about the flimsy thing too... I did go and see the Bolo and Belgrove from Yamazaki and they were nice weight... but some of their other patterns were flimsy and I haven't seen all the ones I was considering. The Onieda Moda is the one FI prefers... and it looks pretty sturdy, but there is no one near me that carries it. Closest Dillards is about an hour and a half away. My aunt in TX lives 10 minutes from though... so I might have her go check it out as she's coming to town on Sunday.

As for FI... bleach... sterling (Island dreams... I don't have a lot of sterling mostly dishes and such... and I would kill him if it went in the dishwasher)? Bleach wouldn't surprise me... does it react with stainless? I asked him what he's using to eat with and he said that about 12 peices were okay and he's using those... but he knows how I am with matching sets and he's planning on tossing those before coming out here.

Its a mystery. He got cranky last time I asked him about though. So I might just have to let it go.

WTNLVR-- I'm in CA he's in NJ with the flatware, so no. As for plain patterns scratching-- yeah, I know... but the more intricate designs I like are pricey. Really pricey.

i too am a matchy matchy snob. i like the tortola.

my satin finishes only stayed satiny for about two months then they wore smooth. my gorham frosted ribbon edge used to be just that, uh, frosted. so if you pick the (gorgeous) satiny one, just know that it will be shiny before long.

HI Everyone! I got the Moda yesterday (my aunt arrived flatware in tow) and it''s PERFECT!

VERY substantial. Heavy. But still fluid and not blocky. I LOVE it. Probably gonna get a second set later on.

I highly recommend anyone who likes more contemporary plain patterns to give this one a once over.

Thanks ladies for the Onieda recommendation and THANK YOU sumbride for the Dillards heads up. Great set, great look, great price.

Woo hoo!!!! So glad everything turned out well!!!!
