I dont believe it judgeing by the poeple I meet everyday Illinois has to be atleast 49th.

Well, my sister is Mensa. We once convinced her that Alaska was pulled over on a tug boat from Russia.

Me, I'd rather have good common sense & judgement over "smartest".

I do find it interesting & my states aren't in bad ranking. I just don't believe in any rankings or polls these days.

I spent my entire life in Connecticut (#2). Interesting that MA (#1) and CT are Democratic ;-).

Shhh!!! My high IQ and I are now in the same state in which *you* live!

Deb ;-)

I'm Utah-raised (#28, utter hogwash, should be MUCH lower), KY-bound (#37, I have no experience to judge, but they're NICE at least) and AZ-stuck (#48, and I'm surprised we're THAT high).

I think AZ ranked so low because only like 4% of the population could READ the english tests well enough to take them...

And, a republican one I might add.

Though it's funny. We tend to vote split on Gov.

What a shock that New Jersey would lead NY on this....very odd indeed....

Hmmm, perhaps all that smog and pollution IS useful!!!

The District of Columbia is conspicuous by its absence.

Yes, New Jersey is number 4! Who wouldda thunk it? It''s probably because many working class parents fork over the extra bucks to send their kids to Catholic schools, instead of sending them to some of the crime ridden public schools.

They do include amongst the criteria " per-pupil expenditures." More expenditures certainly doesn''t mean better schools. Look at NYC which spends 13K per student per year. However, I''m sure all of us would prefer to attend a school in Lincoln, Nebraska which may only spend 3K per student per year.

Hey! I went to junior & senior high in Lincoln, and now I''m in graduate school working on my PhD in biology! There really is quality education here in the prairie (#13!), but a lower cost of living, hence the "only" 3K /student/year. You poor New Yorker''s would KILL to get apartments as nice and as cheap as they are in Lincoln! (try $400 a month for a 2-br 1-ba)

I read a great letter to the editor Melbourne Age today from an Aussie living in USA.
He wrote that Kerry lost because he suffers from Boston exploding head syndrome (my words) and never accounted for the dummies.
Interesting place you guys live in.
I am staying right here.

During my college days while studying Education, I did a term paper on standardized tests & the advantage given to the Northern most states where such "exams" were written. It gave a natural advantage to someone living in said state. However, I don''t know if the tests are still written w/ prejudice.

The only class I ever struggled with in high school was history class, second semester after my transfer from North to South when we studied Civil War history. They didn''t teach it the same up North. I had to get over the "South bad, North good, North kicked butt & abolished Slavery" I had to relearn it as the "War against Northern Agression"
28.gif
, the fact that it was about State''s rights & a whole new chapter written on "Carpetbaggers"& reconstruction . I jest a bit; but, we never studied the Civil War except on a very cursory level in the North.

A teacher in the outback Aussie did a test on a mixed race class.
The aboriginals always did bad at the 3 r''s - so she got some sticks and stones etc and put them on a grid of card board.
Told the kids to study which was where, then took them off.
Abo kids did great with the natural stuff - then she used manufactured products - the white kids did better!
