Okay, I''ve officially started my 2005 Christmas shopping. So far, I''ve gotten myself a new mascara, blotting papers, and a delux sample of philosophy bath stuff. . .also, got my son a ski suit and am about to order younger son some spiderman legos. Kids are so easy to shop for, but my husband is impossible! He likes a lot of things, but these concepts (football, video games, snowboarding) are all foreign to me. . .I have no idea what to put in his stocking. Any fun ideas? Already am familiar with the traditional. . .candy and a big orange in the bottom of the stocking (or even a chocolate orange

What are you thinking of putting in your SO''s stocking? Any ideas for fancier things?

Funny you should mention the orange...I was just thinking of that half an hour ago. The first year I was dating my husband... my Sis in law was 9... I gave her a stocking and put an orange in it...(among other things...) anyway she went nutts! "What is this for?" "Why did you give me a stupid orange?" "What I am I going to do with this?"....I just looked at her and knew there was no point in the explanation.

My orange was always the most appreciated thing in my stocking.

Why is yours there?

MC,

You really can''t go wrong with anything electronic or tools. Maybe an itunes gift card if he has an iPod, DVDs, flash memory. Some neat gadget tools or a multitool like a leatherman.

what is the orange for? I never have heard of it before?

I was just about to ask the same thing.

The orange has always been tradition in my family. . .but, it''s also used to fill up the bottom of the stocking! lol

It''s always been a tangerine in my family. It''s the running joke with all the kids, but my mom still makes a big deal to find her favorite type of tangerines every year. She has always thrown in a couple of walnuts in the shell also. (Fills the toe....)

MC -- Since you are the queen of coffee, and living in Seattle, how about a Starbucks gift card?

for my bf, (he''s one of those likes useful stuff guys), Id get him his razorblades (since they''re expensive), new razor, shaving cream, then a snowboard tuning kit (the bindings can come loose a little, so it has a screwdriver to tighten and stuff like that). If he likes computers, you can get him a memory stick (to bring files to and fro places), mp3 player, beef jerky haha

We always get oranges and apples in our stockings, a new toothbrush and peppermint pattys. I always thought the fruit was to balance out the candy! Or because fruit was always a special treat way back in the day when people couldnt afford it all the time...

I had never heard the orange thing before either!

I usually get my hubby toiletries (razor blades, shaving cream, cologne), gum (he is a gum freak!), gift cards or sometimes his real gift is in there just to throw him off.

I am having a hard time deciding too b/c he just bought his razor blades and gum from Costco, and I haven''t decided what his "real" gift will be. Usually we get a gift for the house but I told him this year I want us to exchange gifts for each other.

The tradition of putting oranges in stockings goes back to the legend of St. Nicholas and is also referenced in a poem by Thomas Nast. (''Twas the Night Before Christmas) The legend goes that St. Nicholas used to toss bags of gold through open windows and the gold fell into stockings which families had hung up by the fireplace to dry at night. Now the oranges symbolize fortune and well-being. There are lots more theories on oranges being used for stocking stuffers on the net...kind of interesting.

I love stuffing stockings! My husband travels a lot, so I like to load up on the .99 trial sizes of toiletries...I also put a couple pair of nice dress socks with fun patterns that he wouldn''t buy for himself (it''s no fun to wrap sox and have the guy open them and say, oh...socks.) I usually throw in some Altoids and gum, I was thinking this year of getting him a magazine subscription and putting the card in there.

Jelly Belly''s? Beef Jerky was a good idea. But yeah, guys are very easy. Just any cheap electronic or tool like thingy will make us happy. Go to Best Buy or wander the electronics/outdoor gear section at Target and you can find tons of cheap gifts guys would like.

If he wears expensive sunglasses I got him that clip that will hold to your visor so they won''t get scratched. Travel size of his fave cologne. Dress socks that weren''t on sale. A CD and a certificate to get his shoes shined.

You could get the mini bottles of liquor from the liquor store. I think my BF would love a stocking full of crown royal.
