Me and my boyfriend had a lovely meal on saturday, and he volunteerly started talking about his friend, and how he told his g/f ok, we are going away and I''m going to propose to you... He was like what is the point in that. And complaining about how she''s not worthy because she all of a sudden decided the ring wasn''t big enough, so they had to upgrade a half carat to 1 carat, but they couldn''t keep the setting because it doesn''t fit the stone. I just added oh that happens.. and he started laughing, oh of course you know all about that happening!! I just hope that when he does eventually propose that he doesn''t buy me a smaller stone, than I actually want. I told him 1-2carats..(sapphire) then he said that''s too big for your small fingers, so I just gave in and said ok around a carat. He''s so subborn about the whole giving in and getting a carat, the man would rather buy .99 carat just to say, I didn''t give in to that whole bunch of crap about the ideal standard.!! lol

I don''t suppose that pointing out that a 1-2 carat sapphire is a lot less than a 1-2 carat diamond would help?

A 1-2 carat sapphire is much smaller than a 1-2 carat diamond. My 1.67 ct round sapphire is not much bigger than my 1.09 ct diamond.

I am on your side of course, but could he possibly want to do the .99 ct just because of the money he can save by not getting the gold standard 1 ct weight? On the other hand if saphires are smaller AND cheaper, it doesn''t make much sense! You could joke that you are going to pick his wedding band and make sure it isn''t what he wants just to put it in perspective for him.

It may or may not help but I have found giving counter examples that effect my BF are quite useful and he usually sees it my way afterwards. Good luck!

I didn''t know that a sapphire is smaller carat wise, what is the mm of a 1 carat sapphire? LoL he probably wouldn''t care what I picked out ring wise unless it was yellow gold, probably wouldn''t wear a wedding ring half the time being a gease monkey and all.
Sparkles- how are you doing? Did you confront your b/f yet?
Wren- you think your proposal is coming soon?

Since sapphire has a slightly higher mass than diamonds, a sapphire of equal volume to a 1 carat diamond will actually weigh a bit more. Somewhere on the web I saw that it should be 1.14 carats. Where most of the visible size difference comes from is that sapphires are often cut deeper. Diamonds are all about angles, Sapphires are all about color and a deeper stone will often look darker/richer.
http://thenaturalsapphirecompany.com has some very nice blue sapphires in the 1.5 - 2.0 carat range that are between $2000-$3000 a carat. You will not be able to buy a nice diamond of equivalent size for that price!

ETA: he's made small muttery noises, but with his ph.d deadline and our trip, the earliest it could be would be like late May-early June.

Just a guy trolling through....

As a guy, I love the idea of a sapphire center stone! Here is a 1.57ct stone that I had considered for my gf''s ring:

It''s only 6.5mm by 6.5mm, so it''s about the same face up size as a 1ct diamond. At only $1600, the difference in price is incredible compared to a 1ct diamond.

Also, be aware that your boyfriend might just be pulling your leg on the size of the stone. I did this with my girlfriend, telling her that a 0.7ct Marquise looks plenty big to me and that her dainty fingers would be overwhelmed with a larger stone. I was trying to lower her expectations a bit so that I could WOW her with a 1.5+ ct stone. Probably dumb on us guys'' part, but that''s the way we look at things. We don''t really think about the stress we put our significant others through.

I hate how you guys pretend to be totally disinterested in the engagement ring thing.. While you and he are probably looking online, when you have time alone. I was talking about a sapphire I saw online and I mispronounced Ceylon and he corrected me, and the wheels started turning in my head, hey wait a minute! Why the heck is he so educated on this stuff... hmmm... lol
Where have you been browsing for sapphire rings online?

Is Tbeck related to Mustang??

Ya know, I had a similar discussion with my bf over the past 2-3 weeks. I originally considered a half carat, since he was working for beans. Then, he got a better job, and I started looking at single carats. But now, after having discovered PS and other wholesale venors, I''ve settled on 2 carats.

And my bf doesn''t feel like he''s getting reamed, since he''s accompanied me on various B&M excursions, as well as the SF Jewelry Mart, and another independent and reputable vendor. He has also seen me in action, haggling, and asking all those lovely details that any PSer would heave, in an effort to obtain a reasonable price.

I didn''t know that sapphires are smaller for the same weight...maybe you should mention that to your bf, in case he doesn''t know? There are some really lovely sapphires on that website...maybe you should send your bf that link, so that he can check them out for himself. I think that the sapphire ering will be gorgeous though.
