Stone that is .4 mm smaller for a setting - will it still work?

I have a ring that DK made for me years ago where I put my original e-ring stone. The measurements of that stone are 6.8x6.86. Since getting the ring, I’ve really always wanted an old cut stone in there and have been casually looking for a while. It’s not something I wanted to spend a ton of money on since it’s not my daily driver ring. I found a really pretty stone, but the measurements are 6.46 x 6.60. I plugged in those measurements in that site that shows what the stone might look like on the finger and they look almost the same size. DK said he could do it but there might be a little extra metal visible. I thought I would definitely be OK with that because the millimeter size is so slight. I got the stone in and I really think it’s beautiful. It does surprise me though that it looks smaller than the MRB - more than I expected, given the small millimeter difference. However, I don’t know if it’s just because seeing the stone mounted in its faux bezel makes it look bigger.

Wanted some input on if you think the stone would look odd bc it’s .2x .4 mm different. Pics and vids below.

To your eye - is the old cut’s outline with its variances more of an oval, or less symmetrical like a teardrop/egg/flat spot or something?

IMO that 6.46 dimension spot is going to be accentuated or camouflaged by the faux bezel - flip of the coin, maybe dependent on how it’s rotated.

Then, whether it’s visible to naked eye while on your hand or only in pics.

Hi RFisher! I confess I don’t understand what you mean. Do you think it looks a different shape than round? To me it just looks round.

I find it difficult to compare the two stones sizes with that "bezel"?? metal surrounding the stone OUTSIDE the prongs--to my eye it is confusing.

The rounder you see the stone to your eye - bodes well. Because it will be going next to the setting that is for an exact round.

I think DK saying you will see more metal is a good thing for them to say, but ‘I’ would ask if that meant seeing more faux bezel space - or does that also mean prongs being larger to accommodate the smaller stone. More info upfront is always welcome before making a decision - but they probably won’t beable to say that until stone in hand.

This one one of my five stone diamonds. It has a similar degree of variation in measurements and it has a bit of an egg shape like @Rfisher was saying. To my eye it looks round. I suspect if it was set in a bezel the wonk would be more apparent. Your don’t want that.

This diamond also looks round to my eye. It has the same variation in measurement as the diamond above but it’s a nice cushion. It might look ok in a faux bezel for a round. If your diamond is like this it could work.

I’m such a genius I just now realized that you’re saying perfectly round because the other stone is 6.8 x 6.8. And you mean the 6 x 4 part being slightly smaller than the 6X6 part thus asking if it looks ovalish. Insert face palm emoji.

I was just looking at the stone thinking they are both round.

Can you have the current stone removed locally and plop in the OEC and see what it looks like? If it looks okay, then send it off to DK to do what may need to be done to the prongs? If you don't like the look, then don't bother to send it to him. Just a thought.
