Hi All
Im hoping for some reassuring comfort here. I had a fitting last night and sadly learned that the cap sleeves to my gown (which are a HUGE reason why i bought my gown)
will not stay in place during dancing and me throwing my arms up in the air, etc.
They have snaps to hold the cap in place but as soon as my lift my arms-- it pops off and the sleeve goes flying (sleeves are sewn in to back of dress).
So the seamtress tried to put elastic in the sleeves so 1) they would stay "in place" on my shoulders and 2) i could lift my arms freely without them popping off.
BUT - last night we learned it is just NOT going to work, everytime i lifted my arms up - the sleeve popped off.

There just isn''t enough material to keep them on and do what i want. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
now i have to go strapless, if not for the entire night, definitly for the dancing section.

im VERY upset but trying not to let it ruin things for me. as i can''t buy another dress (if i had known this was going to happen before, i would have bought a halter top dress or something.

So - my question for you strapless girls is, how was it? were you tugging on your dress all night? mine has a corset back so that will help.
but i really didn''t want strapless cuz i thought i would be pulling it all night long. Please send me something to make me feel better. here is my dress

I normally tug at strapless dresses all night. But I dont have much to hold it up! However I have had the seamstress make thin straps to put on during the reception. How about taking off your cap sleeves during the reception and adding a spaghetti straps? This should be easy enough to do!

If it''s altered correctly, you shouldn''t have to pull it up at all.

I had to pull mine up a couple of times (after we took jumping pics), but I had lost a few lbs after my final fitting.

I had small halter straps sewn in, just in case I found myself tugging at it, which I probably would at the reception since i''m rather small of bust.

If it fits you through your waist and everything, it''s not going anywhere. Wedding gowns are made much better than your average strapless dress. Really, the reason you see bride''s pulling on their strapless dresses is probably more from habit than anything else.

A corseted dress is supported by your hips, but your bust. If your corset is tied tightly enough around your waist, the dress cannot fall too far, because your hips are larger than your waist. With your dress I doubt you''ll have a problem.

Oh no! Could they change the straps so they''re no longer capped, but straight on your shoulder? Or you could add spaghetti straps if you''re really worried about tugging.

I''m with her! My gown is not strapless, but the way it is made it could be revamped to have no sleeves, and the sucker would not budge, no matter what dance I was doing. The internal corset has five hooks and eyes, and the ruched area is so well fitted to my ribs, it doesn''t move.

My strapless corsetted Maggie did just fine this weekend at my AHR. I danced the irish jig, YMCA, and gave hugs to nearly everyone there, and I remember pulling it up ONCE the whole night. I do have a bust, but I think I was laced in tight enough where it wasn''t going anywhere!

You could do spaghetti straps if you wanted, but I''m sure you''ll be just fine.

I don''t know anything about alterations or sewing... but couldn''t the snaps be replaced with buttons? Seems like they wouldn''t pop off so easily. Or could they just be sewn on?

I''m sorry you have to lose the caps you love so much!

I wore a strapless gown and it did not go anywhere. It fit so well that I never once had to pull it up. If your alterations are done well, it will fit like a glove and you''ll have nothing to worry about.

Big hugs, sweetie!

Have you considered tape to keep the cap sleeves in place? This stuff was supposedly a fashion model's secret until Jennifer Lopez wore her spectacular barely-there dress to the Grammy awards, and suddenly the secret was out! Here's one option -- I'm sure a skilled googler could find out what brand is favored by the glitterati!

Like everyone else said, if the dress is well-fitted, it shouldn''t budge. And add some extra reinforcemet... ie: Fashion Tape!! And I don''t know your bust size, but wearing a strapless bra (as opposed to sewing cups into the dress) will give you extra coverage in the event that you start to "slip out".

Thank you all SO MUCH for the responses.
I did speak to the seamstress again today, she is going to add an inch of material to the back, where the cap sleeves hit the dress AND she is also going to replace the snaps with buttons as suggested.
At least, if i can''t wear it "all night" - i will be able to wear them for ceremony, receiving line (hugging people) and pictures.
then if i need to, i''ll take them off before reception and dancing begin.
The corset back is great and my girls (bridesmaids) already went for one lesson oh how to do the corset correctly and im having them do it tight, well i CAN breathe, but it makes my waist look tiny so im confident from that and what you guys wrote, that i should be "ok" dancing and stuff.
Im also wearing a strapless less thing, its longer than a reg bra, its goes to my belly button -
lol
its a bridal bra though - and im big, 34D so thats why i was worried, but again,, you are right. w/the corset, it wont go anywhere.
thanks again, everyone - god i love this site.

Thanks for this thread princess! I went shopping for the first time last night and was disappointed to learn strapless look the best on me. I had the dress on for at least 5 to 10 minutes, but what about all night, bla bla bla. I am a 42D and am terrified about popping out and slippage. This thread gave me a little more confident to continue trying on strapless dresses!
