Dear PS Members,

I'm looking for a stud setting for 7.1mm diameter diamonds. I want them to be as low set and elegant as possible. I also would have the jeweller (David Klass) have them modified to three prongs (instead of four).

Of these three Options which would you choose considering I'm really looking for the lowest set setting?

And I also would want to have the option of adding hanging pearls or other dangling stones for night/ fancy outings. Is this something I have to consider already when picking the stud settings?

Option A

Option B

Option C (Credit to diamondseekers picture)

I personally prefer option A or B, but Would they stretch the earlobe too much? And is Option C actually the lowest set setting?

I prefer C!
For stones over 6mm, martini setting didn’t sit right on my earlobes, though I had 0 problems with smaller stones in martini.

I don’t recommend option B, because of the donuts on the bottom of the martini/cup. They don’t help making the stones sit low and right on the earlobes!!!

Options A and B will droop more than C. C's wider, flat bottom will help it to sit straighter and droop less. Been there, done that!

I’m so glad to see this post! Personally, I love the look of the first, but at this point in my stud life, I think C is the best option…. Anyway, I know this topic has been discussed before, but that was before I had my beautiful ACA’s that need to be reset. LOL

Mine are in WG 8 prong baskets. I need YG because of allergies, and the current baskets are leaving a crazy impression in my earlobes.

So may I add to the conversation and ask if custom vs catalog (a la Stuller) is recommended for resetting?

For diamonds of 7mm, 4-prong setting is unlikely to look squarish.

Platinum should work for you too if you have an allergy to the nickel in white gold. If the basket is leaving that severe of an impression on your earlobe, the earring is too tight. Maybe you should ask about longer posts so that they don’t have to be so tight to your ear.

I am sending diamond studs to DK next week. My main goal is to have the stone sit close to the ear. With that in mind, I like A and B style-wise. I am considering a very refined halo with a low profile.

Echoing everyone here. It seems that the larger stones get, the flatter backs need to be.

I have traditional martinis that I love, but they are for 5.3 mm stones.

For larger stones, I have 6.6 mm CBIs in an 8 prong martini setting (Melissa called it an umbrella setting), and they sit beautifully close to the ear. The bottom is rounded. Wanted to mention that as an alternative.

I also have a pair of Victor’s CER studs, just over a carat each, in bezels. Their backs are flat, much like option 3. They also sit beautifully. Victor told me flatter backs would prevent droop, and I figure Victor has dealt with far more earrings than I have!

I love the look of option A and B! I think B ought to sit relatively flat/close to the ear compared to A so it might work.

I have the 8 prong martinis and they do sit close to the ear, as @Tonks mentioned. I love the settings.

If there is a concern about drooping then option C would probably be the best choice. The flat backs help to keep the earring parallel to the ear lobe. This in comparison to the stems coming to a smaller point. They're all lovely though.

All the best,

I have small stones (.33 each) in the 8 prong martini/umbrella style from Whiteflash. My earlobes have a slight dip in them and the rounded bottom of the setting nestles in perfectly. If I upgrade I’ll absolutely go with this setting again - the prongs are so teeny tiny and delicate and just gorgeous.

My stubs are 7.5 and I wear tradtional 3 prong martini and you can see from my photo they are flush to my ear. I do wear push backs to keep them up and in my humble opinion Don't over think it.

Thank you to all for sharing your experiences! I asked DK to merge Option A and C.

I have a few questions:

My diamonds are each 4.38mm high - the setting will be (from what I read from the CAD) 5.09mm high - is this considered low set? Or should I ask to have the diamonds sitting lower?

How much difference was between your diamond height and setting height?

Is there anything that concerns you regarding this CAD? Should I maybe ask for bigger donuts?

ooooh I'm really glad you've got these in a larger size and they sit flat to the ear. I only have this style in 5mm and below but it's my favorite.

Also re: whether there are considerations with dangles or jackets - nope! Just as long as you can get it on and off your ear you can put dangles or jackets on, because in both cases you just slide them onto the post.

With earrings that is not really an issue. With a ring I recommend four prongs as a minimum and I strongly recommend six.

Not to threadjack, but I‘m curious, @Wink , since we see a lot of four prong solitaires—does it make it safer if the four prong design has double prongs at each corner (so the four prongs are effectively eight)?

Done right, it could. Done wrong, it just means four extra (and smaller) prongs to snag and start the escape process.
