I can see this being my final upgrade (famous last words, I know)-- I plan to have jackets made for dressier events. I have small lobes and I don't think I'd be able to wear larger than 0.80 each, as I think they'd be at the edge of my lobe. Also, my piercings are slightly uneven.

Budget: $6K, but I can stretch this and keep saving.
Size goal for this upgrade: 1.4 -- 1.6ctw. I currently wear 1.01 ctw.
Color G-J Clarity--up to SI1 or eyeclean SI2 I'm not picky about this--my skin is so pink all the time, that I feel like even K would look bright white in contrast. I also have dark hair that sort of shades the studs like a leafy tree does in the summertime, hah. Pinpoints of light! What I'm cognizant of, though, is eventual jackets that will probably be made in G/H diamonds.
Timeline: No big hurry, but I do feel as though it's "time" to do this. :)

Questions:
--VENDOR-- this is the biggest question, in my mind!
--Setting- 6-prong? 4-prong? What types of backs should I get, specifically? I want a low, low profile, and I want it to work with the jackets that I will also get... minimal droop! I'd choose white
gold.
--Calibrated gemstones for the future to wear with the jackets-- 6mm? Does this mean I should stay at the 1.4ctw size for diamonds? I am not a colored stone expert (or experienced shopper), so I'm not sure if this is a big consideration or not. I want to keep it in mind, though.

Regarding the vendor... my current studs are from our wedding jeweler in downtown Chicago. We have used the same man at the same business since our engagement in 1999! I love him. The original 0.50ctw studs were from him in 2003 or 2004... We upgraded to 0.66ctw, then to 1.01 ctw. He has a full trade-in value for the studs, so this would be easy. I currently wear G SI2. We have purchased a handful of other items from him through the years. I trust him and I would feel good about continuing to give him my business. I live two hours away from Chicago nowadays. He could just mail the studs to me, or I could make an appointment to view some choices (we've done both in the past).

Another choice is a local business that I use frequently through the year for repairs and small projects (under 2K). They buy diamonds/allow trades at their discretion. I am assuming my studs would be accepted for a fair price, but I know that I would take a "hit" as compared to the Chicago jeweler. This local jeweler offers AGS 0 stones, and they also carry Forevermark (I know there are no big Forevermark fans here). This local business does a ton for our community, and it would feel good to "shop small" this year, especially. I have posted about this owner before--he is the outgoing president of AGS! It is a two (three?) year term. He's really invested in the industry, and the shop does a lot of community events when not in the middle of a pandemic! He will do stuff like, "I just got a ton of black opals in, and I want you all to see them, so come sip some wine or whiskey next Friday night and let me show them off and teach you more about opals." I bought my grocery coop share at an event they hosted years ago! They did my custom sapphire/diamond anniversary band five years ago.

HPD CBIs-- They don't currently have anything aside from 0.60 Es in my budget

Whiteflash ACAs--I've been looking through their inventory, and they seem to have a lot available. Kind of overwhelming to me! It's fun to browse, though! Help me browse. :)

Sooooo, if you've made it this far, I'd appreciate any insights and suggestions regarding what I'm thinking. Thank you, you blingtastic people!

I personally recommend starting over with Whiteflash, which is exactly what I did. And then my upgrades after that were basically effortless, because they have the best selection of well cut diamonds.

6mm stones will be .80 each, generally.

Here are my top choices:

And if you want to save a little money, this stone is at a great price due to being .79 and a clean SI1. It will match either of the two stones above...

Similar option in I color:

And there are 3 G VS2-SI1s at .80, as well.

After listing all those, I looked back and saw your budget and you'll need to go under .80, more than likely with superideal cuts unless you go with I color or increase budget. I do not think you'll get a good deal at either of the jewelry stores you mentioned. There is usually considerable markup in my experience. I'd personally save a little longer and just sell your old studs.

Thank you for your replies and stone suggestions! I actually almost started this thread in Hangout, since I realized my vendor question is more of a counseling question, hah. I will do more thinking. I really appreciate you sharing these diamonds—it will help with my research!

Diamonds by Lauren has some nice loose diamond earrlngs/specials right now. Not on their site - you'd have to call.

Oh, your questions are definitely fine on Rocky Talky! Anything about diamond buying can be posted here. I guess my main thing is that when I first was looking for diamonds after coming to PS, I definitely did go to a couple of local jewelers to attempt to give them my business. However, not only were prices higher, they couldn't even access stones within ideal cut measurements. So after that experience, I started buying from PS vendors. I do feel sorry for local jewelers, as we do need them for other things such as sizing and repairs and smaller jewelry purchases. But when spending thousands, I just couldn't settle for lesser quality for a higher price. It sounds like your AGS jeweler might be able to access ideal cuts, but I'd absolutely compare prices.

I purchased my ACAs earlier this year- February to be exact - and I love them. They are smaller than what you are considering and mine pack a nice sparkly punch! Bigger ACA’s will look even more amazing. Happy hunting!

OP it looks like your earlobes are fairly small so, if you haven't already, perhaps you should try on some earrings in your lower size range, with some jackets and get an idea of how they will fit. You don't seem to have a lot of extra real estate on your lobes. If you get smaller stones you can get a higher color since you seem to be worried that the jackets will be G/H and maybe higher color studs will work better.

Thank you for letting me know!

I appreciate this reminder for myself! I usually do buy inexpensive fakes to test drive pieces before I commit.... I took some time to browse Amazon, and I have a pair of jackets on their way to me this week! I do have small lobes.

I am considering staying near the lower size, like you suggested, and perhaps saving some money toward a diamond bangle or tennis bracelet... (so I also picked up an inexpensive tennis bracelet to test drive!). I will update!

This is probably the most important $20 I have spent in recent years, hah. These are very small jackets. I believe they are 7mm from outside edges (diameter).

I am not sure what I want to do about jackets now. And how that factors into stud size. Hmm. My thoughts, after having these for a couple of days, is to get superideal studs at this same size, give or take, and wait a bit longer to take some more time to decide. I do have small lobes, so .50 each is sizable on my lobe. If I choose to forgo jackets, I think I could go up to .75 each.

it’s possible to me, now, to get superideals just *under* that .50 mark in order to save quite a bit of money for other projects. I think I will get quite a visual boost with performance.
I may either get a bracelet/bangle or a gold VCA Alhambra pendant while I wait... :) I still don’t know what I want to do about a diamond pendant, so that will stay on the back burner for now.
Thanks for your input and suggestions so far.... this is where I’m at in this moment!

Those look cute!

Sometimes it just takes living with something for awhile to decide which direction to go, or whether a size suits your needs or not.

You have lots of options. If you bought one super ideal you could wear it as a pendant, then down the road move it to an earring and buy a mate. Or you could do the opposite and buy super ideal studs, and move your current ones to a pendant (you could buy one more smaller one and make it into a three stone arrangement.)

have you thought about not getting jackets but getting some kind of diamond drop that has a loop for the stud at the top (wish I knew what they were called)? then you could upgrade your studs now, which I assume you wear a lot, and maybe get to .75 each? Whatever fits on your small ear lobe without hanging below. I have no idea how often you go to dressier events, but later, you could get this "drop" I'm thinking of and have it made with one diamond, or a small cluster or something else. I think that is what I would do. I just don't think jackets on larger diamonds are going to fit on your ear without hanging below. If you don't mind that, different story, but I don't think I'd like them hanging below my lobe but would want them to totally fit on it so there was at least a bit of ear showing beneath the bottom of the earring.
