Has anyone ever done submerged orchids for their centerpieces? I am looking to do submerged orchids in large glass cylinders and the small bamboo plants or planers of fresh green grass around them on the tables. Has anyone done anything like this? Anyone have pictures?? Thanks a BUNCH!!

Also: if people wouldn''t mind telling me how much they paid that would be super helpful too!! Thanks so much!!

I had something very similar. We had 3 different centerpieces but one of them was 3 glass cylinders with rocks on the bottom, submerged cymbidium orchids and floating candles. Here is a photo

wow that looks gorgeous

This one is the centerpiece for a wedding we went to last september. I thought the colors were amazing! Unfortunately, I have no idea about cost....it sure is pretty though!

I''m doing a huge orchid spray in a 24" pilsner vase... fairly expensive, but when I was discussing centerpieces with my florist, she said a submerged orchid stem would be one of the cheapest options... $3-$5 for vase rental, $1ish for stones in the bottom, and $7 or so for the orchid stem plus labor is in the neighborhood of $15/table. Using three depending on how might be twice to three times as expensive, but it''s still less than I am spending, for sure.

So definitely just start talking to florists... you''ll have to do that anyway! Also, you can get great ideas at bridal shows, so keep your eye out for those :)

i''m looking for a pic from a friends wedding, but she did submerged wide leaves and they looked so nice. honestly, its such an easy DIY project and you can get it pretty inexpensively. i don''t know your budget, but you can look on ebay for people''s old vases, and its a great way to save some moooooola!

I forgot you asked for prices-I think it was about $35-$50 a piece for my centerpieces, and keep in mind my other 2 centerpieces had WAY more flowers in them. BUT I did buy the glass from them, it is possible to buy it all from a craft store like Hobby Lobby and it would be a little cheaper. Also, my florist is one of the best in the area and they have a great reputation which=higher price. Though everything was fabulous so I wouldn''t have it any other way.

Wow! Thanks!!! with the prices you all are telling me I guess I shouldn''t be worried with a $3000 flower budget! Especially since my venue supplies the flowers for the cocktail hour! Thanks!!! I will be talking to florists in about a month!

Not only do they look fabulous, they are a really cost effective option and they are easy to DIY, and they are easy to make them look great. Nice choice!

I did three cylindrical vases of different heights with submerged dendrobium orchids and floating candles. I think they were about $75 apiece, which seems like a lot but my overall price on the flowers were pretty good, so I thnk it just got distributed weird. My one tip is that they didn''t fill as much vertical space as I wanted based on my venue, so I did those on half of the tables and orchids, lilies, and willow branches in a tall pilsner vase on the other half. The centerpieces were $150 each, but they were totally worth it. Sorry I don''t have any pictures right now.

I also did little lucky bamboos for my favors. There were two stems tied together with a little thank you card. They were set in some rocks in a small square glass vase. They were $5 each from my florist. It was nice because we put them at each place setting and they added to the table decor.

My wedding was yesterday actually, and we did drowned purple orchids in bubble bowls with willow leaves. It looked quite lovely! The only thing I wish we''d had done different is maybe drop some little lights on the bottom since the room was quite dim and that would have been a cool effect.

My friend did some dendrobium orchids in large vases, and large cybidiums in shorter vases. Her color scheme was this purple/magenta and bright green for the flowers.

This was the exact advice my floris had when I mentioned doing submerged flowers. He immediately stated that "bottom lighting is a must".

Ok, FMIL did these for our RD. Here's my pet peeve. They are not really "functional". You cannot talk thru them. If you want people to be able to talk across the table, then they are not good centerpieces.

I think they are fine if you are having buffet style eating (ie, not sitting at the table for a long period of time) but personally, having them at a seated dinner is very annoying, to me.

I have pictures. I'll post them as soon as I can download. (just a few seconds)

I found this blog post from a well known floral designer in SF.
