BF and I are toying around with the idea of getting a cheap (under $100) temporary engagement ring to serve until the real one is done. Later, it will be used as backup for travel or whatnot.

I want something that''ll look pretty decent/believable. If people ask, I''ll tell them that it''s a $50 temp, but I don''t want people to ASSUME that it''s a cheapie. We''re young-ish, but I dress pretty well, have a good job, and can probably pull off the look.

We like colored gems, no so much diamonds (though they''re fine for the accent pieces), but all the cheapie jewelery is made with CZ, and colored CZs tend to look, well, way too sparkly and really fake.

I like, for example, this one--

The center stone is 8mm and is a "tanzanite-colored" "simulated diamond." WOn''t that looks terribly fake? To the point of ridiculousness? Or not?

It can be set in silver. No plating or anything that''ll rub off or turn my finger green.

Any suggestions?

I like your choice and do not think it's over the top. These are a few off the top of my head.

What a great idea! Give a look at this website www.rosssimons.com I have purchased tons of jewelry from them and have never been disappointed.

Don''t forget to check www.qvc.com , they have colored gems as well as gemstone simulants and they are usually set in white or yellow gold. I have some really nice rings from them.

Check out shopathometv.com. Their bella luce line is good and inexpensve. I have some simulated tanzanite that is to die for. Everyone compliments me on the peices every time they see them.

Wow! Thanks, everyone, for the ideas!

Now to go and check out all those sites!

Sigh... I just don''t like simulated (i.e., CZ) colored gems, I think... That''s probably because I''m a colored-gem-fanatic not a diamond-devoutee. Maybe a diamond (clear CZ) would be better for the temporary. Maybe even go for something REALLY over the top, then... it might be fun!

Colored CZ doens't look like anything... it's supposed to look like diamond not anything else. Lab-made colored gems is a different story - given the right setting, they'll hold up to expectations I think. I would look for a simple setting though - something that would look good without intricate work. Craftmanship can't be faked (IMO) - materials can

One idea might be to get the real setting now and replace the main gem later with the real thing. This... if you know what setting you like already.

Something over the top might be downright dabgerous! How about a 2 carat diamond "speck" after wearing a wallnut-sized ring for a week or so... Perhaps some unlikely shapemight reduce the chances for instant shrinkage

Say... how about a heart shaped place-holder from Wink's ?

Well it might be better for me to get the real stone and then have it set in a temporary setting BF wants to wait until he''s grad school and has access to a metalsmithing/jewelery-making shop to design and create the real ring himself.

I don''t know if I''d experience shrinkage if I got a diamond/cz since I''m such a colored gemstone lover. Created colored gems might be nice, but we just want to spend a few bucks on the temporary.
