Suggestions for moissanite engagement ring

Hi,

I posted on Rocky Talky yesterday about looking for a diamond for an engagement ring. However after discussing with my GF, I think we are going to go with a larger moissanite ring. We had looked at both diamonds and moissanite in person and like the moissanite. I had originally budgeted around $7k for the ring and setting total, and I am looking for either a 7.5mm or 8mm moissanite (I'm probably leaning towards a 7.5mm, I think 8mm might look too big). So now that we've decided to switch there should be plenty of room in my budget.

The setting I found that is perfect is here:
https://www.whiteflash.com/engageme...ek-line-pave-diamond-engagement-ring-4592.htm

I am looking at something similar to this for the moissanite:
https://www.brilliantearth.com/8mm-Super-Premium-Round-Moissanite-MO8.0RD1/?process=cyoring&sid=

However, it doesn't look like I can purchase just the setting from White Flash. In addition, I am intrigued from several posters who I saw had purchased a moissanite stone directly from Tiangyu. I am considering doing this. If I take this route, does anyone have any suggestions on a jeweler I could work with to have the moissanite mounted onto the setting? Does anyone do this online, or do people mostly find a local jeweler? And if anyone knows of a similar setting to the one that is shown that would be great! I'm open to similar setting ideas as well. She really likes the channel set or pave and likes the reverse taper.

Thanks for the help!

If you’re going to go the moissanite route, have a look at August Vintage Inc. They do ideal cut moissanites so you’ll get spectacular light return. Jon also does setting in house and can custom design something for you. Definitely not as cheap as Tianyu (and you could buy both and see which you prefer) but since the cut is what determines the sparkle, you owe it to yourself to see at the very least.
Love Affair Diamonds also have some gorgeous moissies - just not sure if she does MRB or just OECs.

Hi,
I was the one who have bought from Tianyu gems, although I can only speak for their OEC stones, I have never seen a modern round from them.
The prices are unbeatable, so I think, you have nothing to loose, so I would just order one, to see, how you like it.
If you don’t find it nice enough for an ering, you could make a pendant from it for her as a wedding present.

Regarding the setting I would contact David Klass. I’ve never worked with him before, but he is suggested on this forum really often for budget friendly custom work.

:love:I feel you should reach out to Jonathan. His moissy stones are ideal cut and he also has mrb moissy. And as stated above, he can make a custom ring for you. August vintageinc.com. He’s offering a discount right now

as for looking for a jeweler who can set the loose stone: ive worked with david klass and i was pretty satisfied with the transaction overall! there are several of his moissanite pieces in this forum and then a david klass bling thread in show me the bling. i'd recommend perusing those. i think pretty much anyone will work with moissanite. its just about finding someone in your budget and whose work you appreciate.

If you are going to spend that much on a moissanite (~$1,500) I would definitely get it from August Vintage instead of Brilliant Earth.

That said, you could get the same spec stone as BE for around $200 from Tianyu. Did you see the Reddit post I linked to on your other thread? I am autumngirlsoup on Reddit and you can always shoot me a PM with questions over there. :)

Hey OP, I just ordered a 7.5mm modern round brilliant from August vintage. I’ll post pics when I receive it! I also ordered a 7.5mm OEC from tiyanu gems on alibaba - I just couldn’t resist, the price is so low!! I’ll post lots of pics :)

Since the patent expired (Charles and Colvard for many years, due to their patent, were the only ones able to sell Moissanite) many people are now manufacturing and selling Moissanite, including China and India. And prices have dropped, a lot.
However, not all Moissanite is equal.
Better production means whiter gems (Moissanite can have a distinct yellow tone, especially in larger sizes and certain cuts ie emerald cut) and less inclusions (yes Moissanite has inclusions, they are like little needles).
Better cutting means lessening of their doubly refractive nature (this is the facets looking “blurry) and creating maximum sparkle.
While both China and India sell good Moissanite, the ones produced and cut in the US ie the August Vintage collection tend to be “a grade above”. And you pay more for this.
Any bench jeweller can set Moissanite into a ring (though apparently they glow a weird colour when under the torch - this goes back to normal) but it’s always less hassle if the person you get the gem from also provides the setting and sets it.
I haven’t had many pleasant experiences taking my own gem and own setting into a jewellers just for setting. Some have just refused to do it. They make most their money if they sell you the gem and the setting so they aren’t interested in just the job of “setting”.
8mm is a 2 carat equivalent so it’s pretty big and noticeable. Depending on your social circle ie what’s the usual size of diamond engagement rings you might find people will ask, sometimes quite rudely if “it’s real”.
“Of course it is real” is the reply.
If more polite and genuinely curious people ask nicely you can share the wonder of Moissanite with them happily.
Btw, I have a large size diamond ring ie a real diamond and some people tell me it has to be CZ because of its size!

I posted this question in another thread, but would like to ask here...Has anyone bought from a dealer in India (on eBay) going buy the name of everlast4all? I am looking at a stone there that looks really good.

All moissanite I have purchased from India have looked nothing like the stock photos. All extremely poorly cut and none of them white. For the cost difference definitely buy from Tianyu or Starsgem in China. The quality is more of a guarantee.

THANK YOU Sezzwho. I have been waiting and hoping someone would answer! The photos look like another sites photos. I was also leery about China, but the stories here have helped to easy my fears. I put my diamonds in the safe and use travel rings; however, the new moissanite seems very interesting. I did hear that the large princess or rectangle cuts are not as pretty or colorless. Do you know is this is true?
