Every August for the last four years, my girlfriend and I have gone camping at the San Juan Islands, which is along the Pacific Ocean and right off the Washington state coast. It holds a very special place in both our hearts...and this Friday, as the sun is setting, I plan on asking her to marry me.

I''m planning to propose to my girlfriend on Friday at this very location around the same time this picture was taken, sunset:

Here''s the basic gist (haven''t completely thought things out all the way, figured I''d add some spontaneity to this):

Digital photography is a hobby of mine, and every year that we come here, she gives me time to take pictures, expecially of the sunset. I wouldn''t expect this year to be any different, so I plan on taking a few pictures as the sun is beginning to set. I then plan on asking my girlfriend to sit on the bench so I can "experiment a little" and take some pictures with the light coming from the sunset on her (colors come out best at sunrise and sunset).

After a few shots, I let her know the pics came out really well, so well that I''d like some shots of both of us. I then set my camera up on my tripod and set the camera''s burst mode to shoot continuously until there''s nothing left on the card. Once the camera is setup, I take my place on the bench and being subtle let her know that the timer is going to go off in a few seconds for one shot (so she thinks I''m only taking one picture, when the camera is really going to go off in regular intervals the entire time). After a few seconds, I''ll act as if the picture has already been taken and while still sitting on the bench, start making small talk to get her mind off the camera just in case she''s thinking about it. I plan on reminiscing about some of the great memories we''ve had while there, and mentioning how there''s nothing better than being with the one I love watching the sun set at our favorite place. As she''s seated on the bench, I''ll get down on one knee and go into my marriage proposal, and if all goes well, she''ll say yes...and i''ll have the whole thing on camera.

After things calm down a little from this emotional moment, I plan on heading over to our tent which is only a few feet away, and bringing out a sleeping bag or a blanket along with a bottle of wine or champagne and a couple glasses so we can celebrate a little more and finish watching the sun go down. I created a photo slideshow of pictures and memories we''ve taken throughout the years on my ipod that''s choreographed to her favorite love song and was thinking of bringing it out at that time.
Now I need some advice...where do you think would be the best place to set the camera up? I''d like for her face to be in focus so her expression would be captured. Ideally, I''d also like to get the sunset and the Pacific Ocean in the background, but if the camera is facing the sunset, I''m thinking both her and me will come out overexposed. Any suggestions?

What do you think of the plan?

Well, I love the idea!! What island is that on? It''s a beautiful location. Unfortunately, I don''t have any suggestions for the set up b/c it looks like you''ll have to choose between the sunset and her expression. Since you can take pictures of the two of you and the sunset after you propose, I say you set it up to focus on her expression-that''s a once in a lifetime thing. However, it will be hard to plan where that will be in the frame before it happens. Like I said, I don''t know!!

But I wish you the best of luck with your proposal!!

Thanks! The island is the San Juan Island part of a chain of islands that also includes Orcas Island and Lopez Island. You can take a ferry at Anacortes, which is about 1.5 - 2 hours north of Seattle.

I''m starting to have second thoughts about using the camera. Any thoughts on proposals caught on camera? Does it lessen the moment?

Great idea!

As a fellow amateur photog, I may have to steal this idea... lol

First off, what camera are you using? Both of my digicams only take 3 - 5 pictures in burst mode. Might want to double check that it takes pictures until the memory card is full. If your is like mine, most higher end cameras have a remote control available, which would also work well.

I agree, a picture with the sunset in the background would be the best shot... but also the hardest to get. You will have to use a flash, or else the bright background will ruin the exposure of your faces.... not good. I would get a few solo shots of her to get the lighting right before moving in. :)

Best of luck, and be sure to post the results.

Silly, I''ve been to the Suan Juans - only Orcas Island though. Which actual island is it on? You can always take pictures after the moment if you decided the camera is a no-go! She''ll probably be beaming so it will be a good time for a photo shoot!!

For what it''s worth, I actually "filmed" my proposal on my digital camera. I did it in a somewhat dark room only lit by candles (lots of them), so the video itself is fairly grainy, but overall it turned out fine and definitely captured the moment. My fiance is SO glad I filmed it because truthfully she couldn''t remember a single thing about it after it had happened, and this was a great way for her to re-live the moment. Plus, now we have that moment captured forever in time, something that only the two of us will ever see, our special day.

Hope that helps! Good luck-
