A friend of mine is interested in getting a pair of ruby stud earrings and matching pendant. Specs are:
  • ~5mm for each ruby
  • Heat treatment ok
  • 14K yellow gold setting
  • Budget: under $500 (is this even feasible?)
I checked Yvonne Railey's Etsy page and didn't see anything matching that description, though I'll ask her for a quote. I also looked at Master Cut Gems' site but didn't see anything.

I would love your recommendations on other places to look!

I think multicolor.com generally has a large selection and a fair number of parcels and pairs. Not sure about rubies specifically though.

I think she could get earrings or maybe a pendant for $500 but not both for under that price, unless she is willing to go lead-filled or fracture filled. You did tell her that most of the cheap rubies she sees in the shops are lead-filled right?

Gem Select has rubies she can sort through by price and shape. They reveal their treatments so I think they are a reliable place to shop at.

An alternative would be to ask one of the Indian vendors, maybe GoldenBird to source and set rubies in yellow gold for under $500 but you would have to trust them.

Thanks @elliefire99 and @peacechick for the suggestions! I’ll check those out. I definitely want to steer her away from lead-filled, low-quality gems.

Would your friend consider spinel and 9k gold? Found this lovely pair of earrings here:

I have bought from this seller before, her pictures are pretty true to life.

Her budget is too low for what she wants.

500 for a ruby suite? thats pretty darn low. She would need to really rethink and revise her wants unless she was willing to take any and all treatments. Heat only rubies can be quite expensive, especially if they're in the ideal color range.

I'll level-set with her about her budget and see what she's willing to compromise.

I think you may be able to get Yvonne Raley to make something using stones in the 3 mm range. Alternatively preloved on loupetroop you can probably find some spinel studs.

Otherwise if the budget has leeway then daimonds by lauren, and the gemstone project both have ruby studs (but you need a lot of leeway)

Thank you for the recs!

She could try the pendant this year and the earrings next? What about the ring? And bracelet? Surely we need goals (and time to save up for the next installment)

Yes, totally!

Sent you a DM on LoupeTroop!

That's a good price! I think she's pretty set on rubies though; they're her birth stone. Thanks anyway!
