I know there are older threads on sunless tanners, but I wanted to get the most recent information and most recent product information.
I am on the fair side and will not lay in the sun anymore nor will I go in the tanning beds.
I am thinking about trying the mystic tan, but of course, it is always nice to find something you can do in the privacy of your own home and especially if it is a last minute thing.
I am open to creams, sprays, whatever works and is safe! Are these creams approved and safe?
Any suggestions?
Thank you!

How do I bump this to Family Friends and Health, maybe I should have posted this question there or should I leave it here?

Hi, I read that thread, but there was a lot more in there about how bad tanning is for you. which I 110% agree with, so I wanted to get more feedback on self tanners.....but thank you!!

self tanning lotions recommendations are in there though.

golden I posted in that other thread about the spray tans (although the one I got wasn't the Mystic Tan brand, it was SunFX). Anyway I wrote a pretty extensive write-up about how it works out on me and posted photos of me in the same outfit with and without the spray tan.

Here's some info on self-tanners generally, since you asked if they are safe this site might be a good starting point (I haven't read the whole site so not commenting on its veracity, use your own judgment of course!): Sunless.com - Facts & Myths

I am red headed and fair. I absolutley LOVE este lauder tanning mist.

Jergens Glow Express is their speedy version of the Jergens Glow lotion which claims to give you color in a week. I prefer this faster version, as it is a thicker formula and smells of cocoa butter. Wal-mart was giving out samples awhile ago from their site, it may still be available if you want to give it a try.

I hear Glow Fusion (made by the Lip Fusion people) is a good brand and they claim there is no chemical smell, but I''ve googled reviews on it, and it says you have to be pretty careful about the application process as it dries fast, and streaks can occur. I guess practice makes perfect on any product you use, IMO.

I use Jergans Natural Glow. It works wel but it has this funky smell... my boss swears she can''t smell anything (and I''ve asked other people and they say they can''t) but it has me freaked so I put it on at night and then take a shower in the morning to make sure I don''t smell.

That was my glorious thread! Jergens rubs off easily, plus its a gradual tan daily lotion and not so much a sunless tanner. I finally found something that works for me after trying several sunless tanners. I mention it in that thread but if you don't feel like reading all of that: I bought Chanel Soleil Identite self tanner. It's pricey but I like it a lot. (I have sensitive skin and it gives no irritation) I don't even notice any "chemical" smell to it either.

All the others I have tried do have that smell. Not sure if that is a concern of yours.

thank you for all the replies!!

As for the Chanel- how long does it last, does it rub off or stain? Have you used it on your face?

I really want something I can use all over, so that is why I am thinking the spray tan is going to be best, it will get all over. I just hope it isnt streaky! Maybe I can do the spray tan and then use the Chanel tanner for upkeep!

It doesn''t stain anything! It last about roughly a week. I''ve been applying it about 2-3 times to get the color I want. I have also put it on my face. The only thing with the face is that it doesn''t seem to last very long on the face. But Im not sure any sunless tanner has lasted that long on my face (as I wash the makeup off daily and exfoliate.) They do have a bottle for the face though. Im not sure what the difference is? I''ve never used a sunless tanner for the face as I thought it was the same stuff. I love..love..love this sunless tanner.

Especially with my situation. Works great for me. I had read several reviews on the Chanel sunless tanner before going to purchase it and I couldn''t find one bad review for it.

What about your neck, how do you get it to match/blend so well?

It's rather easy:

After I get out of the shower and dry all off, I put it on my face first (to let it dry before makeup) and under the chin (about starting at the neck), then I put another dollop on my hands and apply that to the neck & chest. When applying to the neck to blend it in, I make sure I lightly just blend it up towards the face, behind the ears and towards the back of the neck making sure the finger are tightly together to prevent streaking. It's all in blending. Think eyeshadow, make sure you cover every part and just blend. It has a cream color to it, so it's not tinted. It absorbs rather quickly so make sure you use quick movements while blending it in as well. But, I think the face is still lightly damp by the time you are applying to the neck area. It gets pretty easy once you get used to it. It's not hard, trust me!

After face & neck, I usually do my arms next. So I put a dollop in my hands and blend on the right arm up to the elbow. Then I do the other up to the elbow. After that, I apply from the elbow up over the shoulder one arm at a time. The back is a little tricky, if your arms are rather flexible then you shouldn't have a problem so long as you have a mirror.

When you get to legs, I do the bottom leg up to the knee along with the foot, then get another dollop and do the top leg up to the bum, sometimes over the bum. lol Stomach I usually do last.

Oh! I almost forgot. After applying to the face/neck/arms I wash my hands because it seems all sunless tanners leave your hands feeling icky. Then after the legs wash them again. I have a little trick to applying to the top of the hand. You do this after applying everywhere else and washing/drying your hands. I use a tissue or a cotton round pad and apply a smaller dollop (about the size of a small pea) to the tissue and rub that across the top of the hand and over the fingers, making sure you get in between the fingers too, blending towards the wrist and let that dry real good.

How long does it take to see color?

I hope you caught the last part I added in there at the end of my last post!

It usually takes a few hours before noticing some color. Usually 1 application is not enough for me no matter what sunless tanner I have tried. Because I have such a fair complexion, this is why I apply 2-3 times a week (just to get more color.) It might be different for other skin tones. Since you are fair like me, I would think you would be like me.

Oh, also: sometimes it doesn''t last as long on the hands (like the face) due to washing them often. At least for me. But that''s no big deal. If the hands look less dark than the arms, just apply to the hands anytime.

I usually apply the lotion on a Wed, Thur, Fri mornings (so I don''t have to worry about it over the weekend) Or, like this week I did yesterday (Wed) and today (Thur) and I think I look good enough this week so that''s only twice. It doesn''t have to be so many days in a row either. I''ve done a Tues, Thurs, Fri too.

I''ve been on a search for a good sunless tanner as well.
Last night I ordered some products from Xen-Tan. I researched reviews
and felt like I would give it a go. It is not cheap, but most of the
reviews are glowing.

Yeah I''ve read about that sunless tanner before.

dreamgirl - if my Xen-Tan does not work well, I''m trying your Chanel.
It is the smell that gets to me. I keep thinking if I can smell me, then others can too!!

I am exhausted just from reading your application of the chanel cream!!! HAHAHA as I would be with anything else, that is why the spray tans seem so appealing to me, they are quick! I wish the chanel came in a spray formula!

bebe- I know what you mean. The smells just bother me so bad too!

golden- It''s not as bad or as hard as it sounds. It''s real easy, just rub it over yourself evenly. Thats all. lol

I love the Jergens self tanner for face. One of DH''s customers sent us a huge box of goodies and there were 3 smallish tubes of the stuff in there, I''ve been using it ever since. I do notice a very faint chemical smell but my trick is to put the self tanner on my face, neck and chest first, let it "sink in" and then follow up with my regular moisturizer. I keep asking DH if it smells funny and he says no, so that''s good enough for me.
