Tanzanite Help Please :o)

It looks very nice; maybe a bit lighter blue across the top (or maybe it''s just the viewing angle). If this is for your Leon ring you should know (if you don''t already) that Tanzanite is pretty delicate and should be worn with care.

Yes its for my Leon ring. I would be very careful when wearing it. I love the colour of Tanzanite. I just don''t know how to buy a gemstone without windows in it! I sometimes think I can see one and other times I don''t see one that is obviously there!

I''m not blown away by this one.

I just happen to have an emerald cut tanzanite of the same proportions so I took it out for comparison. I''m seeing a lot more light play from my stone when I move it around (under halogen lighting) -- with flashes of blue, violet, light blue, and some pink and red. It also looks like the color in mine is more saturated than the one you''re looking at. I have some lighter colored tanzies (which i actually like as well as the deeper blue), but there again, they seem to have more light play than the stone you''re looking at. We don''t see many tanzies here and my eye really isn''t attuned to what a good tanzie should look like on video, but my instinct is to say... keep looking.

Must. Get. Ready. For . Work.

But quickly, you might check into Harriet''s suppliers.

.. She posted a link here recently. They mine out of the same region and I assume they have tanzanites.

Off to get ready for work!

I think the colour is quite pretty in the static picture. I don’t recommend a tanzanite as a ring stone due to softness at MOH 6.5 but more importantly, it has a perfect cleavage in one direction. I’m not talking the “bosom” cleavage but if you hit it in the correct direction, it’s going to completely break off. It is also strongly trichroic meaning you will see blue, green and purple depending on which angle you are looking at. There is nothing inherently bad about it but thought you might want to know that so you will not be surprised to see it “shift”.

The color is really good but the saturation is a little light. Don''t get me wrong that is still a very nice stone and purchasing it would be excellent. I like it and think it would look great on your ring! Please let us know if you do get it

I am having the stone set into a different setting. Leon advised maybe an aquamarine for the centre stone. I wouldn''t wear this ring around the house or to do anything which might damage it. I know accidents happen but I am careful as a rule. He said if anything happened to the stone its easy enough to change it out.

This is the setting I am having made (the one I liked originally turned out to be just that bit too expensive).

I like the setting maisie. Can''t wait to see the finished piece!

LOVE that setting, I would like to get a setting similar to that for my sapphire someday.

As for the stone, it really doesn''t strike me. I can''t see any serious problems, though, and everyone has their own tastes. I really think you could do better for that price. I would listen to Chrono about the hardness. My garnet is harder that that and I already have a dent in it. If you are going to get that nice of a setting, I would consider a stone you could wear a little more often.

hmmm..harriet''s tsavorite..now that is a stone..might have to dig that pic up again so I can drool somemore....

I like that one a lot more.

Here''s a link to the company that provided Harriet''s tsavorite, and the tsavs AmberGretchen used in her 5-stone ring. A lot of their tanzies show up as ''sold'' but I suppose you could as them if they have another stone with characteristics similar to one you like...

Harriet purchased both her tsavorites elsewhere. I purchased mine from Swala.

Where? I''ve only seen microscopic pictures of it.

Maisie, I have a number of Tanzanite rings and if yours is going to be protected by a halo then I don''t see a problem (especially as it sounds like you know how to take care of it). I can''t get your links to work (computer''s being lazy tonight) but I look for depth of colour in a Tanzy, lack of inclusions and a great cut. If the colour is too deep it will look murky but a pale one will lack "ooomph". My personal preference is a medium dark blue with purple undertones. I don''t know if you''re familiar with Cadbury''s chocolate but my favourite colour is like their wrapping but slightly more blue in tone. I''ve posted photos of my collection before so a quick search should bring them up for you and show you the different colours if you''re interested.

What happened to the spess idea, Maisie?? Bored already?

Agree with the others, not hugely into tanzanite myself. But the PI ones look fairly nice. Color depends really on your preferences for more blue vs more purple.

How bout going for spinels? just a thought less expensive and much more durable? and you can find a range of colors and it would be sparkly too.

Take a look at THIS. I know it''s way out of your planned budget, but I just wanted to show you what kind of stones you can get for 400-500$/ct (which is what you''d be paying, but for stones several shades lighter and ten times smaller). The color in that one is pretty much as good as it can get with tanzanites. But off course, if you prefer lighter shades by all means go for those, but keep in mind that you shouldn''t be paying 500$/ct for them.

I have been itching for a larger photo of the Spinel! There are large photos of her lovely tsavorite.
