I know, RANDOM, but the current movies/TV thread made me think about the fact that our Netflix queue has over 400 DVDs on it, and it NEVER GETS SHORTER! Both DH and I go on binges, and add like 10 at a time. At our current rate, even if we stopped adding movies now, it would still take us about 4 years to get through them all! Right now we have Monk (Season 4), and Dexter. Smokin'' Aces is the last thing on there, and I have no idea what that is, so he must have put it on!

So, how long is your queue?
What movies do you have out now?
What is the most recently added movie?

Good thread, Selkie!

Our queue is really short because we only just joined, but right now we have "Wind that Shakes the Barley" out and Pan''s Labyrinth, Cache, and Brazil in the top 3. I''m hoping we''ll get a chance to watch some movies over Christmas--we''ve both been too busy to see anything lately.

The last one we saw from there was a German film called "Mostly Martha"--it was fantastic! Highly recommended.

Oooh

Smokin'' Aces is about a bunch of competing hired assassins trying to kill this one guy.

Next ten:
The Virgin Suicides
The Big Lebowski
Malena
West Wing
Six Feet under
Monk
Arrested Development
Nip/Tuck
Alias
Planet Earth

I love NetFlix

You know, after you said that, I realized I''ve seen Smoking Aces, just didn''t realize that''s what it was called. Also, Arrested Development is MADE OF WIN. Seriously.

Heh...I had to go look up "made of win," thanks for teaching me new slang, ladypirate! Perfect description for AD (which I will forever mourn).

Good movie! Did you notice that the new Catherine Zeta Jones movie (No Reservations) is basically a total copycat/remake of the story? That's why I didn't even bother to go see it.

I saw a few good ones recently...I loved Merry Christmas, which is a story of troops in WWI laying down arms on Christmas eve. I also just saw Black Book and really, really liked it. That was a WWII movie. Both were excellent.

My queue is about 150 long, but there are 6 seasons of the Sopranos in there. I like being able to watch HBO stuff without having to get HBO!!

We have two accounts, so DH''s is always a surprise (we have completely different tastes in movies - I like the "check your brain at the door" kind and he likes the "makes me think" kind. ANYWAY here are mine right now (and yes, I realize this looks like a 12 year old''s list!):

Ratatouille
Knocked Up
A Price Above Rubies
Georgia Rule
Shrek the Third
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Dane Cook: Vicious Circle
Fiddler on the Roof
RV
Pan''s Labyrinth
Miss Potter

Has anyone else had the WORST time training their mail carrier how Netflix works?!?! Both here and at our old house, it''s like our mail person didn''t understand the concept of PICKING UP THE MOVIE when it''s sitting in our box to be returned. Rrrrg.

Definitely not a 12 year old''s list! Ratatouille is wonderful for all ages and Pan''s Labyrinth is not appropriate for any age (not a kid''s movie by far)!

I always add movies that aren''t out on DVD yet and it''s great that they can be saved so I don''t forget about them when they finally come out.

Right now, at home I have:

Once
Stardust
This is England (which I decided not to watch. . .sounds to upsetting)
and Planet in Peril

On my primary quere list (DVDs with release dates and should be out soon):

Superbad
Eastern Promises
Lady Chatterley
The heartbreak kid
Shoot ''em up
Sunshine
Joshua
Golden Door

On the saved list for DVDs still in theaters w/out home release dates, there are are only 24 movies that I''m too lazy to type out right now.

My bf and I loved Ratatouille! Granted, we're both huge foodies and I'm kind of in love with Peter O'Toole, so that helped.

Also, Elmorton, have you seen "Wizard People, Dear Readers?" It's an alternate audio track to the first Harry Potter movie where he narrates it as if he's reading a book on tape--you turn the sound off on the movie and listen to this instead. It's hilarious and definitely a good "check your brain at the door" activity. You can download it free online.

MC, have you watched Stardust yet? I really liked it--reminded me of The Princess Bride, which is one of my all time favorites.

ETA: You're welcome, Selkie. Always happy to share the slang.

We haven''t watched Stardust, but I''m hoping since since it''s rated PG-13, that my kids *may* be able to watch it! It''s nearly impossible to find movies that keep the entire family satisfied. The ONLY movie my kids and I both love is Muriel''s Wedding. lol (and my kids are BOYS ages 5 & 7. They even love the Abba soundtrack!

LOL, the Harry Potter thing sounds cool. I''ll admit I''m really anti-Potter in theory (I read the first book because I was observing a class in which it was assigned, but thought the writing was VERY poor in comparison to Rowling''s forerunners, namely Lewis/Tolkien - I really don''t understand the HP obsession), but - the movies are interesting, especially since I like to see what they do with special effects.

STARDUST! I knew there was one I was missing when I went to add recent stuff that I want to see. The trailer for that looks SO GOOD.

Hee! That's great. Have you showed them Labyrinth? If they like Abba, they might like David Bowie....

Stardust should be pretty age appropriate--the only things I can think of to watch out for are a couple of scary moments with the witches and some cross-dressing (although not in an inappropriate way--just wanted to throw that out there in case you had a problem with it.)

It's a great movie--I hope your family enjoys it!

ETA: Elmorton, you have to see Wizard People, then! You will get a huge kick out of it.

I get so lost in Netflix that I can never seem to add much to my list. I wanted to start watching a few classics because I thought I should be more refined
3.gif
but I have to say, they''re just not my cup of tea. Casablanca...hated it...bored to tears. Funny Face...bored silly. I am looking forward to the original Sabrina and Father of the Bride though.

I recently got Miss Potter and two more discs of Ballykissangel from my library...they''re free!

We watched License to Wed recently and it was good. Knocked up was good but not as great as everyone said. I want to see Georgia Rule and I think that''s on my list.

I hate that Netflix doesn''t automatically organize their titles in alphabetical order. It drives me batty. I think you can rearrange them but it should be done automatically. It would make it easier to search.

We''ll have to get Labyrinth because my kids LOVE David Bowie''s song "Changes," and they''ll get a kick out of seeing the guy behind the voice. It''s a bit odd that they love only one or two songs by various musicians and want to hear the same songs over and over to the point of driving me insane, but maybe that is common for kids! lol

Thanks for letting me know that Stardust is safe for children!

Ha, Zoe, I sort of felt the same way about a lot of classics people INSISTED I MUST SEE. But I do love pretty much any Katherine Hepburn movie, and especially Philadelphia Story, because of the fast pace and humor most of them have.

ladypirate, where can I get that Wizard People thing? Sounds awesome, and I'm an HP fan (but not so much of one that I don't think it deserves so mocking from time to time!). ETA: Never mind, found it. Google is my friend.

I loved Stardust! I think there's some mild swearing. HOWEVER: be careful if your kids love it and decide they want the book (actually, graphic novel) it's based on, since there's nudity and sex in the original. I think there's a PG-13 version of the book out, too.

I have the 3 at a time plan, and I try to split it 3 ways. I''m trying to see more of the AFI''s top 100 because I''m plain sick of so many bad movies out lately. And my utmost passion is old MGM musicals.

i have about 100 at a time in my list, and I usually try to get one new release, one top 100, and one musical.

Here are some on the top:

Stardust
The Searchers
Babes on Broadway
The Nannie Diaries
On the Waterfront
Lawrence of Arabia
Top Hat
A Star is Born
The Glenn Miller Story
Du Barry was a Lady

actually, i don''t know what is next in the cue but our list is at the 500 maximum. my husband keeps a 2nd list because i keep e-mailing him with movies to add.

we get cable for the internet but not the tv so we''re just now watching THE SOPRANOS on dvd. i think we''re in year 4 now i think. very well done series.

movie zombie

Stardust was really enjoyable. Funny thing though is I completely forgot we had seen it in the theater! lol We don''t even see very many movies, but there are so many other bits of information on my mind and I''ve been focused on reading five books at the moment (lol!) that I spaced out about it.

But, it was more charming the second time through.

My kids had their first day of winter break yesterday and normally they only are allowed to play on the computer on the weekends, but we let them play last night so they were in the office during the whole movie. It was barely acceptable for them to watch. I never know where to draw the line.

MC--I really liked Pan's Labyrinth, but it is NOT a childrens movie! It is very violent, and sad. There is a torture scene that I will not watch again ( I am going to fast-forward through the next time I see it)--oh, and you do know that it is all in Spanish and sub-titled? In another scene during one of the little girl's missions, she makes a bad decision and a cute little fairy that is accompanying her gets her head bitten off by the very creepy monster. Anyway it was still a very compelling movie, but for adults, kind of like a Grimm's Fairy Tale.

Stardust is amazing, yes, it reminded me of Princess Bride but not as funny or good

Stranger than Fiction is very slow--not at all as funny as I thought it would be, my husband left after about 1/3 of it, I stayed through till the end but started to fall asleep.

Edited to add: AHHH, I just figured out you all are talking about the old Labyrinth movie and not the new Pan's Labyrinth!! wheew! thank goodness-- I was worried about your little ones screaming when the fairies head popped off!

Yep, hahaha we meant "Labyrinth!" My husband bought "Pan''s Labyrinth" after seeing it in the theaters, but we''ve only watched it at home one time. It''s so sad and upsetting that my husband said it''s the first movie that''s nearly brought him to tears and he''s not an emotional guy AT ALL, so that tells you something about how deep this movie is. My kids have asked about it, but of course they''d NEVER be allowed to watch it! And I agree it is compelling, but difficult to watch at the same time.

Hee! Very different movies. Although I can see a spinoff now: "You remind me of a babe" "What babe?" "The babe with the---OH MY GOD MONSTERS"

OK, I think sleep madness is starting to set in.
