Hi all,

I would like to get a 3 prong tennis bracelet to wear everyday made for my upcoming 40th birthday, and would like to use IDJ as the vendor. Would someone please be able to help with my questions below?

1. My wrists measures 5.5 inches - they have suggested making the bracelet 6.5 inches long - does this sounds like a good length? I know it's completely subjective, but I would like it not too tight and not too lose. I was thinking perhaps 6.25 inches might be better?
2. I would like the bracelet to be 8 tcw. If we go with 6.5 inches, they said we will need 38 diamonds, at .20 pointers each. Does this amount of diamonds sound about right?
3. Since the stones are small, do they have to be certified? I have asked for pricescope quality stones, do I need to consider colour/clarity, etc?
4. All of my jewellery is set in platinum, but I think 18k white gold would be best, as it would be a bit heavy otherwise to wear?
5. I read that some members have asked for a little safety bar to be placed over the clasp - for those that have this, is it uncomfortable to wear?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

It's all in the measuring but I just went through this in a lot of detail for a family member who lives far away. For a "skinny" bracelet like a tennis bracelet, and where you want a semi-tailored look (not sagging halfway down your hand like a big paper-clip link), I think a one-inch step-up is too much.

Use a fat (3/4") fabric tape measure and measure in three places at the wrist -- "at the bone" and slightly proximal and slightly distal. Have a friend help.

I am guessing that someone heard your measurements and just assumed that the correct size would be too small (as in "That sounds pretty small!").

I thought adding a half inch was more the norm but I don't make, buy, or wear many bracelets.

OP
Sounds like a nice project.
I bought a tennis bracelet for my wife a number of years ago.
Just some random thoughts after reading your post.

- I thought all the bracelets have a “safety clasp” on them, otherwise when you join the 2 sides and it does not click in, you may lose the bracelet from your wrist and never know it fell off.

- If you want all the stones certified by a GIA or AGS that will skyrocket the price of the bracelet and probably be impractical to buy now. I think you have to trust the vendor with picking quality of stones. You throw out the term, Pricescope Quality, I think I know what you mean. You want these small stones to have Hearts and arrows features. Does IDJ melee for these bracelets do this? I don’t know. When I bought the bracelet for my wife I shopped it at both BGD and Whiteflash because they told me their stones are uncertified but the stones they use follow the above standard. I bought the bracelet from BGD in the end and when I take a loupe to any of the stones, they can see hearts and arrows. Do you have to have this? Only you can answer that.

Good luck and would love to see the finished bracelet.

Thank you for the replies.

LilAlex, I am also wondering if 6 inches or even 6.25 inches might be better for me - I don't want it to slide off at all! Will remeasure my wrist, as it can be a bit tricky to tell exactly where the bracelet will sit.

Thanks, Willy - the bracelet will have a clasp, but in addition to that, a safety bar which will provide another way to help protect the bracelet in case the clasp gets loose and opens.

I will post pics of the finished product once done! :)

I have a 7 inch wrist. If I wear an 8 its really big. I usually try to buy 7.5.
Define PS quality. No one really knows what that is. What color, what clarity, what cut? True PS quality would be the price of WF or BG. So what is acceptable To you?

Happy upcoming 40th! What a great way to celebrate.
I think 6.5 will be too big for you so you may want to go with 6 or 6.25 ~ actually if they can totally customize a 6.15 might be just perfect.
IDJ has a pretty good reputation ~ I believe there are a few PS'ers who have purchased tennis bracelets from them and are very happy.
You could probably save some money and do the bracelet in 14k but if you love 18k then I'd go with that.
I can't wait to see pictures when complete!!

My wrist is likewise 5.5" and my tennis bracelet is 6.5". It is comfortably loose. Mine is 5.67ctw, yours will be more so I would go with 6.5" due to the size of the diamonds as well. I feel like bigger the diamonds, the tighter it would fit. 6.25" might be tight.

Check out this thread. Others have found it helpful.

For what it is worth, my wife’s bracelet is 6 3/4” long.
She is 5’5, 115 lbs.
It does have that “V” shaped clasp that is compressed and slides in to the catch but also has that “bar” which snaps across so that it cannot come off your wrist.

My wrist is 6". My bracelet is 6.5" and it's perfect. Long enough that there is drape and movement and I can push it up on my wrist if I need to type on a keyboard. Short enough that it doesn't get in the way by sagging on my palms too much.

Mine is made with 13 pointers and 14k gold (for hardness and durability) and sometimes I get little indentations on my skin from the setting. I was originally going after PT but after wearing my 14k gold bracelet, I am of the mind that it would have been too heavy in platinum. It is 11.5 grams total and I consider that to be a fair amount of weight.

I am a PS lurker but saw your post and since I just bought a similar bracelet from IDJ in August I thought I would jump in.

My wrist is also 5.5" and I purchased a 6.5" 3 prong diamond bracelet. It is a little loose and I could have gone down to 6.25" but I prefer the extra length so I can see the bracelet with long sleeves. For me, it is not too long, but if you are on the fence you can always purchase the 6.5" and take out a link if needed.

My bracelet is 6.10 carats has 36 diamonds so each diamond is approx 17 points. A good ever day size imo.

For the safety clasp, I purchased another diamond bracelet (lost!) which was so hard to get on and off that I did not always wear it as I had to ask for an assist sometimes and I was worried that I was weakening the links around the clasp every time I had to yank it off. My recent IDJ bracelet has a clasp which is much easier to unfasten and has a safety clasp on the bottom which snaps in place with a good snap, so it feels secure.

I purchased 14kt, although I usually prefer 18kt or platinum. I think the 14kt is more durable and I want to wear this bracelet and not worry about it.

Finally - the IDJ diamonds are just beautiful, my bracelet sparkles like crazy. Good luck with it! I got mine to celebrate a birthday too, so happy to have it.

My wrist measures 5.8 inches & my current TB is 6.4 inches which is slightly long to my preference but I have no plan making it shorter to the perfect length of 6.2 inches, simply because I stubbornly want to achieve certain carat weight. I also prefer total number of diamonds to be plural. How weird?

OP, I would think the perfect length for you ranges from 6.00 - 6.2 inches.
6.5 sounds too long :)

I have a 5" waist and 5.5" is just nice. Any longer will be cumbersome. as for the pointers, the bigger the better. Safety clasp is a must. Did you manage to get the bracelet in the end?
