Here’s my proposal story! I got engaged on Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. I was totally surprised, as my then-boyfriend had told me he didn’t have the ring and he wouldn’t get it until late December. He also told me it would happen sometime before next June, so I really wasn’t expecting it at all. Anyway, I currently live in a different city from him and had just arrived for the weekend. It was our 6 year anniversary and he had made a reservation at a nice restaurant and told me ahead of time to bring the appropriate clothing (but I still didn’t suspect). When I got to the apartment, we left right away to pick up a dessert for his relative’s Thanksgiving meal the next day; then I told him I had to go buy tights to wear w/my dress because it was cold and I didn’t have any (there are a lot of retail stores around where he lives). He said he had to go to the bathroom and I know he hates shopping, so I didn’t think anything of it when he went home first.
When I got back to the apartment and he answered the door, the TV was on and he said, “there’s a turkey-eating contest on TV.” I said, “on the Food Channel?” and he said “no.” I was walking in and fiddling with my stuff, coat still on, when I noticed there were a bunch of lit candles on the table (hidden from the doorway by a screen). I said, “hey, why’d you turn on the candles?” and then noticed he was down on his knee!!! Then it sort of registered, but I still didn’t totally accept what was happening because I completely believed him about the ring not being ready! I asked him, “what are you doing over there?” and just stood there and stared at him in disbelief. He said “come over here,” and I walked over, and had to put down my shopping bag because I was still holding it. Then he took my hand, made a little speech that ended with “will you marry me?” and me hugging him and lots of “awwwww!” Sometime during his speech he took the ring box from the table, opened it, and put it back down – when I looked down and saw the ring I think I finally realized it was happening. After he finished his speech, he put the ring on my finger and it fit (more or less) perfectly! Finally, I managed to take off my coat and scarf – I was all sweaty at this point from running around outside, wearing too many layers indoors, and all the excitement! Then I noticed he was also playing a song on the stereo that we both like. He had it on low, and the TV on before, so I wouldn’t hear the music when I first came in.
It was so great and totally unexpected! I didn’t cry at all, because I was in shock! I started asking him all these questions about how he said the ring wasn’t ready and some other “issues” he had brought up to throw me off track since I started asking him about it. I couldn’t believe he tricked me and I completely believed him! He told me later that I had the funniest look of shock on my face at the time.
Then we went to a nice restaurant, where I simultaneously ogled my ring and felt extremely guilty about the amount of money we were spending – but it was our anniversary AND engagement dinner, and you only get engaged once (hopefully), right?
That’s it! I’m still in disbelief. I wasn’t able to sleep that night and not much the night after either, because I was so excited to be fiancé and fiancée! It’ll be nice to be engaged for the holidays, because he’s coming to my family’s for Christmas, and I was worried about potentially awkward moments with my family asking him questions, but that won’t be a problem anymore.
Thanks to everyone for all the support and for making this such a great place to hang out and vent!
