Hey ladies - so I took a study break last night to have dinner with my mom at a place near our apartment (hey, gotta eat, right?), and we were walking back to the car and walked by a Goodwill, and I saw some pretty china in the window so we decided to go in on a lark just to check it out. A little background here: FI and I had a really hard time finding patterned china we liked so we just registered for very plain stuff with simple platinum rims (see pic below) and figured we could get accent pieces as we found them later on. Anyway, so mom and I check out this china, and its a 95 piece set for $71, so I figure even if FI doesn''t love it like I do, we can sell it on Craigslist and recoup what we spent at least, and it was all in fairly good to impeccable condition. The set included everything but dinner plates - large and small bowls, salad plates, bread and butter plates, cups and saucers, and a butter dish. So I get it home and I checked it out online and it turns out its a discontinued pattern from Noritake called Marywood. Then I looked at replacement costs in case we wanted to supplement with dinner plates, and I was totally blown away. At the absolute cheapest website I could find what we got last night for $71 would have cost about $3500!!! So, needless to say I am pretty excited, and it was even prettier today in the sunlight when I served FI breakfast on it. I''m still trying to figure out if its porcelain or bone china or what and what the metal is, so maybe someone on here can enlighten me on that. In the meantime, here are some pics of a few of the items, and at the bottom, the set we registered for which will be perfect to mix and match with!

very nice find AG!

i would venture to say it's bone china, it looks very delicate, and that the rim is probably a platinum mixture or similar. for that kind of retail price you would not be looking at anything chintzy in the building materials.

it will be great with your plain platinum china as well! ours looks like your plain platinum china but i think it's bone as well.

Thanks Mara - I kind of thought it looked like bone china too but I wasn''t sure. I''m thinking of contacting Noritake directly (once my qualifying exam is over next Monday, of course!) and seeing what information they can give me.

AG that is beautiful!!!!!

Oh, that is so pretty!!! Definitely a pattern you will be happy with for years to come...I like a little detail on china, but nothing crazy, so I''m very attracted to yours! Congrats!

Wow, I love it!! Great find!

Awesome! What a find!!

AmberGretchen,

I *think* that is my mom's china pattern! I wish so much right now that I was still living with them so I could run over the China cabinet to see. She got married in 1978 - I guess the pattern is pretty timeless

.

The funny thing about the China for my mom, is that she never wanted expensive (to her), Noritake china. She picked out a different set (much cheaper) that had PINK flowers on it, and my grandma (dad's mom) bought her this one because she didn't think what she picked out was expensive enough!

I think the set will match beautifully with your plain platinum dishes. What a GREAT find!

Good luck on your qualifying exams!!!!

ETA: I'll ask my mom tomorrow what the name of her pattern is & see if she knows if it is bone china.

Thanks you guys - I really am excited to have gotten such a great deal. FI has been really funnt too - he''s been drinking coffee and tea all day so he can use the new cups and saucers

Sorry if I mis-stated - the exam is actually a week from tomorrow, although I''m doing a practice in front of my entire lab on Tuesday, and I''ve been told that''ll probably be harder than the exam itself

I''ve honestly been studying and working towards it for so long (pretty much straight through since right after Thanksgiving) that by now I''m more than ready to get it over with, and I almost (almost) don''t care how it comes out as long as its over!

Danielle - that''s such a funny story (although too bad your mom didn''t get something that she picked out!), and that would be awesome if your mom knows something about it - I''ll check back with this thread tomorrow (probably from the library unfortunately) to see what she says

AmberGretchen,

I asked my mom today info. about her china, and hers is actually Noritake Savannah.

It''s pretty similar. I''m having trouble attaching the picture from replacementsltd.com, but basically the flowers on hers are a bit bigger and seem to have some green accents to them.

My mom didn''t know whether her china was bone china, but the rim on hers in made out of platinum. I guess she was never really into her china - she had to look at the plate to find out the name!

Anyway, sorry I wasn''t much help!

That''s fine Danielle - thanks for the info. I am going to do some more research after my exam to see what I can come up with in the way of information about this pattern.
