I saw The Family Stone this weekend. I love Sarah Jessica Parker and Luke Wilson...I thought they were both very good in it. So was the rest of the cast.

My brother saw it and said it was more sad than funny. Is this true? Did you like it?

There were some sad parts but I don''t think it was more sad than funny. I think it was a good combination of the two. If you cry at movies you will most likely cry in this one. I went with a girlfriend of mine and she was crying at the end. I didn''t but she''s a sap!

I really did like it. I''d go see it again.

I really want to see this...do you think it''s more of a chick-flick? I don''t want to torture my poor hubby! ;)

No I don''t so...I think there''s enough humor in it that he would like it. Luke Wilson is hilarious in it.

I definitely want to see this movie.

For a long while there were absolutely no movies that I wanted to see...now there''s a bunch! I saw Memoirs of a Geisha (it opens this week, but we had an early release here and I saw it over the weekend). I really liked it (though definitely not nearly as good or encompassing as the book). I want to see The Family Stone, Rent...there''s a bunch!

I saw it last night, and am sad to say I didn''t like it at all. Maybe my expectations were too high, and without giving any details away, I just felt like it was poorly edited, the storyline was hard to believe and it just didn''t do it for me. There are some funny parts, but overall I thought it was a miss.

But my girlfriend had seen it earlier that day and she loved it, so maybe it is just me

~~I just saw this movie with one of my friends and we both loved it!! It''s actually now one of my favorites!! I liked the fact that it had a twist in it, and it wasn''t predictable!!

I want to see this too... My hubby won''t go! Mara- I''ll go see it w/ you

Bay Area PSers, let''s go see it together!

Our Atlanta paper gave it a C- & I have to agree. The previews made it out to be a "Meet the Parents" type of movie, but it didn''t come near that movie in my opinion. The script was really weak, and I didn''t appreciate the sermon the dad gave over dinner to the family which was obviously really meant for the movie audience. The father & mother in the movie get upset with Sarah Jessica Parker''s character, Meredith because she''s too conservative for them; so then we get to hear a lot of liberal propaganda. My husband hated it, I thought it was lame, my girlfriend said she laughed & cried (I didn''t do either), and her husband also hated it. Definitely a "Chick Flick."

I drug hubby to see this last weekend. I enjoyed it and surprisingly he did too. I was surprised by the drama aspect, expecting only a comedy, but enjoyed it. A perfectly disfunctional family holiday!

Warning, don't read this if you don't want details about the movie. That was the worst movie we've ever seen. They were a pathetic excuse for a family, mean and judgmenetal, totally intolerant of any other views than their own and just plain sad. There was a deaf, gay son with a black boyfriend who is never, ever shown in the previews or trailers. Could they have squeezed anymore "social" issues into this poor excuse for entertainment? There were like 15 couples in the theater when we were and several of them made comments on the way out. One guy told an employee that the movie was crap, and it was. If my family was like that, I'd never go home. We almost walked out. Yahoo movie reviews have a lot of very negative reviews with F grades. There were A's also, but not too many other grades. There was absolutely nothing the least bit entertaining or redeeming in this film. The Sarah Jessica Parker character was portrayed as uptight and just needed a few beers and a joint to loosen up (great msg) and then she jumps from one brother to the other (so real life) and the sister was extremely mean and unlikeable. Everyone in the family was immature. The mom (Diane Keaton) made comments about her daughter losing her virginity that was just out and out horrible. It was definitely not a "Christmas" movie at all. That was just the backdrop. Just plain bad!

hahah I just saw this thread was bumped and I saw your comment orange vixen from weeks ago! I still haven''t seen this movie, is it even still in theatres? There were so many movies out this season and the only one I managed to make it to was Memoirs of a Geisha which I thought was very good, having not read the book...

I guess we''ll have to catch Family Stone on PPV!!! Orange Vixen, that is the best way to get hubby to see it..

Mara, I still haven''t seen it either... Holidays were so busy, and I didn''t want to fight the traffic around here just to see the movie by myself after all of the bad reviews... You''re right about that, I''ll catch it on PPV in a few months.

I did, however, see ''Brokeback Mountain''... got dragged to it by my cousin in lieu of Family Stone. That''s a can of worms (or a new thread) that I don''t want to open here on PS

I think I''ll take your advice and go see Memoirs of a Geisha next.

BTW, off topic, Happy New Year to all! Hope this year has many great films in store for us

How do you really feel?

I took my 82 year old mother and my husband''s aunt to see The Family Stone over the Christmas holiday. We were really disappointed. The previews make it seem like a comedy, but it is rarely funny. To me the story line was contrived and totally unrealistic. The only tears I shed were for paying money to see it!

I finally saw it and was disappointed. I had going in expecting to laugh and all everyone in the theater is doing is crying!
I was very let down and wish I would of saved it for
Blockbuster!

Goodness, I didn''t think it was that bad! I thought Luke Wilson dry sense of humor was hilarious.

Unfortunately there are families in this world like that, I actually knew one that was just like this...minus the brother swapping.

The acting wasn''t bad. It''s the storyline that sucked. I happen to like most of the actors. It''s just getting old that every movie you go to see has to have some liberal social agenda. I want to just flat out be entertained and not told how if you don''t agree with the storyline, you''re intolerant, ignorant, etc. Hollywood''s job is not to push their lifestyles on the rest of the world. I think we''ve all pretty much agreed Hollywood is not in touch with the real world. I saw the Producer''s and it had a gay focus (Mel Brooks of course wrote it) and it was entertaining because there was no you have to think this way mentality, it was just funny. Mel Brooks makes fun of everyone without being offensive to anyone. That''s the difference.
