The rich get thinner, and the poor get ... well ... fatter. Not fair!

NYC is a microcosm of America's rich vs. the poor.

Most of those getting Ozempic in NYC's rich areas do not have diabetes.
Most of those with diabetes in NYC's poor areas can't get Ozempic.

White privilege is everywhere, and it really pisses me off.

My SO of 16 years was from a family of family of (basically) poor Mexican farm workers.
For me it was a 16-year eye-opening experience when it comes to white privilege.

It's hard to educate my white folk about the dramatic unfair privileges we enjoy.
It's like trying to explain water to fish.

- no heat in the house for an entire Northern winter

- no air conditioning

- no family car

- no phone of any kind

- no washer or dryer

- and on and on...

This was a huge chunk of my childhood.

I am WHITE.

Please, just stop with the virtue-signaling guilt trip, @kenny.

Sorry.
Many years of my childhood were spend in poverty too.

White privilege is a generalization.
Exceptions to a generalization do not make the generalization untrue.
Generalizations are generally true.
That's why they're called generalizations.

I'm not directing guilt at anyone.
I did nothing to create white privilege, so I'm not guilty go anything.
I've just benefitted from it, must as right handed people benefit from nealy all succors being designed for them.

I've also benefitted from being male - another thing I cannot take credit or blame for.

Is someone here really going to try to argue that white privilege in healthcare isn’t a Thing in America?

Like, really?

I'm going to have to jump on this...it's white privilege BC none of the things you experienced are BECAUSE you are white. It's a very different experience for POC.

I myself grew up in a minority white POC majority school district in NY (just outside of NYC). I never understood the privilege until I left my area for college. No one assumed I didn't have two parents, or a car, or went to summer camp, or didn't need a job, or didn't have a parent who died when I was a kid, or had another parent who went to prison...BC I was white. My "power" and position in life was automatically assumed BC I was white. That's white privilege in a nutshell for me.

I totally agree. Of course you can be white/straight/male etc. and grow up in poverty and endure all other manner of misfortune. But if you were a member of a sidelined minority group and had that same type of upbringing, you'd also have the effects of pervasive, built-in racism or etc. to deal with on top of it.

A lot can fly right over the heads of those not adversely affected by something, which should not be confused with those issues not actually existing or not being significant.

Back to the Ozempic issue, though still a bit off-topic, I've recently read about some horrifying side effects from it. I don't know how common they are though.
