Thinking of converting a half eternity band to a dbty necklace - suggestions please

I am getting an eternity band for Christmas this year (yay me!) But this leaves me with a .63ctw (12 stone) half eternity platinum band, that I know will get little/no wear from here on out. So I was thinking of having the stones reused to make a dbty station necklace (and maybe a matching bracelet-I'd have to add a couple of stones if I do) and check off another item(s) on my wish list. I want to use it as a layering piece in my neck-mess rather than a stand alone piece.

1. I was thinking a 9-stone, spaced 1.5 inches apart with a little more space after the last stone at the back, 15-3/4 to 16 inch long.
@RunningwithScissors : Did you ever have a YG dbty made with irregularly spaced stones? If so, I'd love to see it!
2. What thickness chain do you suggest?
3. Can platinum be reused (for bezels?)

Hey RMOO :wavey:

Sounds like a fun project!

I haven't made my YG DBTY necklace yet...I've had a lot of unexpected house repairs this year -- boo! But it is still on my wishlist.

The thickness of the chain is really a personal decision. I went with 1mm for my platinum DBTY necklace because I wanted a barely-there look to it. The 1 mm chain from WF is very sturdy, my SA convinced me of it and it is very true -- there is no worry about breakage whatsoever. The thin chain makes the diamonds look like dew drops glistening on a spider web. However, when I get around to doing my YG, long DBTY chain, I'm going to use a 1.5mm chain just because I want that particular necklace to have more visual weight. So in my view, its totally a style preference. Perhaps try some necklaces on at your local jewelry stores and get a feel for what you like.

I have no idea about the platinum bezel reuse -- best to ask the bench you are considering using.

Keep us posted, would love to see your results!

Thanks for your thoughts @RunningwithScissors! I will probably start the project after the holidays. I'll have to go through my chains and measure the cable style ones with my calipers to try and get a feel for the mm/visual weight. When I do actually get my dbty, I would like to be able to put it on and leave it on 24/7, so it can't be too fine a chain. I'm thinking yellow gold chain with platinum bezels (unless it is not recommended.)

Anyone have a 16" dbty with more than 10 stones out there that is willing to post a neck shot?

Also, anyone have an opinion on migraines or smooth bezels?

I did get one quote for 14k yellow gold chain and platinum bezels at $1300 which seems high (since I am providing diamonds), but this is my first custom piece and I did spec 12 bezels, so not sure about that.

I think that price for setting sounds quite competitive, actually. Good bezel work is more difficult than prongs.

bumping this for you
because im sure there are a lot of DBTY necklaces out there

I have a Whiteflash dbty necklace that I think is 17" and 11 stones. I think 5 point diamonds are really quite small for a dbty necklace. I believe the smallest WF makes is with 7 pointers, and those are pretty small. But if you do it, I'd definitely have smooth bezels.

The platinum setting can be sold for the scrap value. It would not be reused to make your bezels. You might want to consider selling the ring as is and you can later buy a dbty necklace in whatever size you want.

Thanks, good to know you don’t think the price is out of line. I figured the bezels would require more labor, and there’s 12 of them, but never having done anything like this , I wasn’t positive.

They do have a 5pt. (14 bezel) version, but I get your point. And I appreciate your opinion on the milgraining. Do you think smooth does a better job of making a smaller stone appear larger?
