Thoughts on color - I vs J

As I narrow down choices for a diamond upgrade, wanted to start a few questions to get perspective on clarity and color. This thread is for color.

my current stone is an I, I have never noticed any yellow so my assumption is that I am not color sensitive. My other diamonds (8 carat tennis bracelet, diamond studs, etc) are also all in the H to I color range. Has anyone gone to a J and noticed a significant difference in the yellow tones or will it be such a small change it won’t be noticeable. I’m thinking if I don’t notice color now, one grade won’t be significant. My only fear is if it will be obvious because my other stones are the higher color.

one thing I am considering is asking Whiteflash if I can send them my stone (I’ll be trading it in) and they can photograph the new stones next to it so I can see the color relative to what I am familiar with.

look forward to hearing thoughts!

I don't think you'll be able to tell much from pictures. But I will tell you that I have an I color stone and would not go down to J in an ideal cut round. One time I ordered 2 diamonds for studs and one was I color and one was J, and I could easily tell which was which. I didn't like the tint as it made the stone not as bright as the higher color one (I returned them). I have also sent for many stones to look at for rings, and every time, I color was my limit. I have seen a few people around here upgrade to higher colors from J, as well. So my advice is to stick with I color. It's a nice value and still is white in most lighting.

Appreciate your insights! That is very helpful perspective to hear - and why I love this forum!

I think it depends on you, people are different. H-I is my sweet spot as well but I am not colour sensitive enough to mind a J (I would say about half the time I don’t notice a difference between I and J). Depends on the J, honestly; it’s a wide range. It may be safer to stick to I, but then you’ll be sacrificing something else (size, clarity or paying more).

Since you’re going with WF and you do have the excellent upgrade/return policy going for you, I think asking them to take photos and videos comparing possible stones to your I is a good idea. Also asking them for their opinion perhaps (they seem like they would give you an honest answer as per their eye). Pick your favourite stone, have it sent to you and live with it for a little while to make sure you’re happy with it. I’m sure they will allow you to exchange it back or for a different stone if you find the tint too high. Or you can purchase the J now and upgrade to a similar size I in the future.

It seems like there are a large number of people whos cut off it "I". Pictures of your stone and the J next to each other is
an excellent idea. Hopefully, Houston is thawing and WF can make it happen! Post the pics when you get them. Be a
great tool for everyone.

Edit...BYW, I have a Super Ideal J and plan on upgrading the color. I dont feel like I'm that color sensitive but with the
lighting in my house and taupe walls the J just doesnt get any help. Painting the inside of my house white may be cheaper!

Hahaha!!!! I have taupe walls too! I think I am pretty convinced to just get the I color. Don’t want to be constantly second guessing myself which I probably would no matter how good the J looks!

Yeah. The walls will kill you every time. Lol!

J color has a wider range, so you could ask WF if the J color would be considered a high J ... definitely you could send in your current I stone, which could be a high I or a low I (or an average I lol), for comparison to any upgrade stone you are considering ... but if you go with a J color, I'd suggest having it sent loose so you can check it out before having it set.

I'm not color sensitive. I've previously owned J ACAs in 1.8, 2.3, and 2.6. I could definitely see the warmth from the side profile. My current 2.9 ACA is I and it's definitely whiter than my previous Js, and I don't see the tint.598539498830

Gorgeous and I really appreciate your advice and pictures. I just emailed Lizy at Whiteflash to see if she can hold the I/vs2 and if I can send my current stone in to get comparison pics against it (just to be extra sure of my decision!). experiences like yours are really helping me solidify what I will be happy with! Your stone looks so bright and white to me.

Now I just have to decide on the setting - my current pic puts me probably $4k over my husbands preferred budget (ha!) but think there are a few tweaks to bring cost down - if not told her I’ll just get a plain setting for now because the center stone is my priority.
