I can't post pics but I attached a file so , I hope that works.

It has a few little "scribbles" in the center but..other than that , it actually looks pretty clear. It also seems to have a good color.

Here's the information from the website :

"Platinum antique lady's genuine emerald and diamond finger ring. The ring contains one emerald cut genuine emerald center weighing approximately 1.33ct. The emerald is surrounded by 16 Old European Cut diamonds weighing a total of approximately 1.57ct. The ring weighs 4.75 grams. "

It's 3,750.00.

Does it seem like a good quality emerald?

Thanks.

the overall ring is pretty, I am not an expert on colored stones but I see the marks. Not sure if that is helpful but it is pretty!!!

And ,if I bought it , I might do a different setting.

I was thinking maybe something like this. So , instead of the yellow asscher , the little emerald.

It would play up the emerald , it wouldn''t be too bulky , it would be glamorous but slightly understated , and very feminine.

Thoughts?

Thanks. :)

Hi Diamond fan!

Yes , that helps.

I''m interested in opinions on whether the flaws detract from it''s beauty or make it look like a poor quality emerald.

truth? It might bother me, but I am pretty perfectionistic. Would it compromise the intergrity of the stone, as emeralds are so fragile as it is and those scratches might open up? (I have heard that emeralds have gasses in them that can fracture the stone from within without any apparent catalyst externally).

The setting is gorgeous, but the emerald is bleh. I prefer the one at Leon's website you posted about.

Thanks Diamondfan , I appreciate your honesty.

I''m a perfectionist as well.

I didn''t know there are gasses in emeralds , that''s good to know.

Hi simplysplendid ,

Thanks!

I wrote to Leon asking him if he had a straight-on pic of the face of the emerald ring and if it had been treated in any way, so far he hasn''t written me back.

My question about the ring has pretty much been answered by the other posters on that thread , though.

I''m undecided on how I feel about an emerald being treated but , of course , I''d prefer a natural , flawless emerlad.

If Leon sends me a straight angled pic of that emerald , and I like it , I might save up for it.

But , I''ve heard some unflattering things about treated emeralds , so. I''m not sure yet.

How do you feel about treated emeralds?

Now , this is an emerald necklace on Leon's site and I like how this looks. It's a gorgeous color and I don't see an flaws.

I would take the emerald and make a ring out of it.

If something has been oiled , I wonder how long the oiling lasts before one begins to see the cracks or inclusions again?

Whoops! I had to do a ton of editing to post the pic for some reason , so here it is. lol

Coloratura, as far as I know, and perhaps some experts would chime in, oiling is a totally acceptable way to treat emerald. Unlike glass filled rubies, which totally brings down the value of rubies, oiling emerald does not.

You might want to find out more from here:

That first emerald isn't very pretty - a lot of tiny inclusions and feathers that will likely be visible to the eye. It might also have some colour banding as I see some yellow streaks in it, as well as a large window in the middle. The table is also off center and not squared. I would not buy it. How do if this emerald is untreated? From the price, my guess is that it is likely to be a treated stone as well.

As mentioned before, oiling is acceptable in emeralds. It also, in a way, protects the emerald. I have no qualms about having an oiled emerald or several.

If you want an eye clean, untreated emerald of fine quality with the colour of the ones on Art of Platinum, be prepared to pay several thousands for the emerald alone.

Hi simplysplendid!

Thank you for that link about emeralds , I read and bookmarked it.

I think before I make up my mind on the Leon Mege emerald , I''d like to find one that''s as similar as possible but naturally eye clean.

Hi Chromo!
emsmile.gif

Thanks for helping , I appreciate it.

What you described , the color of the Leon emerald but naturally eye clean , is precisely what I'm looking for.

I'm still considering the emerald on Leon's site.

Do you know of any websites that offer naturally eye clean emeralds? I know it's best to look at jewels in-person but , I would just like to get an idea.

Incidentally , Leon wrote me back with respect to the emerald ring. He was very polite and sent me another picture. The only trouble is , it wasn't the angle I wanted. lol I must've described it wrong , I asked if he had any pics from the front , straight-on. The angle he sent me was of the back and detailed the setting.
He also confirmed what the other Pricescopers said , it has been oiled.

Anyway , at least he wrote back and was very polite. He said should I have any questions to please call.

What is the size you are looking for and your budget?

Hi Chrono ,

Thank you so much!

That emerald is very pretty but , I''m not a fan of the brilliant look.

For now , I''m interested in something around 2-3 carats. And , the color of the emerald in the Leon necklace is perfect. Not too light , not too dark. I also like emeralds that seem to "glow." The color of the emerald you posted is fine , I just prefer it without the brilliant look.Definitely emerald-cut.

Eye clean as much as possible.

As for budget , I''d rather se some examples of what I like and then if it''s too expensive for right now , work from there.

I''m interested to see what the prices would be for what I''m interested in. I really like the coloring of Columbian emeralds. Zambian emeralds have a little too much olive in them.

How about this one? http://www.africagems.com/104026.html It is oiled but it looks fairly clean.

Hi,

Emeralds come with inclusions and in deciding on an emerald, I would choose colour and cut over clarity. If you want a clean emerald, then emerald is probably not the stone for you. You may want to choose a Tsavorite instead.

Kismet that emerald is gorgeous!

That is very close to my specifications!

I will definitely be contemplating that one!

Thank you!

SS,
I also suggested this (tsavorite, chrome tourmaline, etc) in her previous thread but I guess she really wants an emerald. I agree that I'd choose colour and cut over clarity as well. I'd go oiled for an eye clean stone.

See this prior thread:

Hi simplysplendid ,

Emeralds just glow. I like the tsavorite , but it''s not the same green.

I might get one that''s been oiled ,but I''m not sure yet.

I think I''m going for good clarity and color.

Hi Chrono ,

I might go for an oiled.

I like tsavorites , but they don''t look like emeralds to me. Emeralds just glow and have a minty , gassy color.

The Leon Mege emeralds are a beautiful color.

I would also hesitate spending so much for the setting and then removing the stone. What about asking Leon to source a loose stone and having him make the setting you want? It might save you money in the long run...

As I posted on one of your earlier threads, inclusions can add to rather than subtract from an emeralds beauty.
With respect to oiling, they can always be re-oiled.

I''ve just been looking at the emeralds in the photos in the Garrards book I just got - all of them have inclusions. Some worse than the one you posted and all are $$$$$.

I wouldn''t be worried at all by oiling. Personally I wouldn''t want a totally clean emerald - they look like synthetics and have no personality IMHO.

Hi Coloratura,

Good Clarity is not synonymous with emerald. You can only find something that is less included, but not totally eye clean or flawless, especially in slightly larger sizes. I agree that I will be concerned with an emerald with good clarity/eye clean - they look like synthetics. Most fine emerald are oiled and you would still be able to see the inclusions up close. That''s the beauty of emerald, in my opinion.
