My boyfriend and started looking at engagement and wedding rings last month. I've been trying to read up as much as possible and have made a few trips to various jewelers and antique shops to look at options in person. I know what I want for a setting, but am still trying to figure out exactly what I want for a center stone. I am leaning toward a sapphire as it's a bit more budget friendly but still durable for daily wear. Shape wise, I love step cuts and squarer cuts.

This weekend I came across this ring on Eragem: https://eragem.com/a17031.html

I absolutely adore it in the pictures. The setting is exactly what I want and is even the right size. I love that the stone is mounted East-West, and the baguette size and style is just right. The part I am less confident in is evaluating the Sapphire itself, and also the overall value at that asking price. I'd love to hear some opinions on the stone and the price and anything in particular I should be considering about this piece.

What is your budget?
Do you like the color of that sapphire?

In my humble opinion, the ring is beautiful but the sapphire is included and dark.

You’ll find that folks of this forum both consumers and those in the trade prize the color of royal blue and cornflower. Cleaner gemstone. Heat or no heat is very personal but heat is a stable treatment and makes the gemstone more affordable.

If you like step cut, I’ll list a few here and you can have a custom east west with David Klass and still stay in budget.

Royal blue. This one is a really nice color and very clean stone.

Montana sapphires

And then there this 3ct of royal blue that my heart ache for

I don't mind the teal tone to the stone, and the way the pictures are lighted, it looks quite blue. However my concern is under the types of light I am usually in, it will read almost black, which is not what I am after.

That 3ct you linked to truly is a beauty, but unfortunately more than I feel comfortable spending. Budget wise, we were hoping to stay closer to $3k, but have some flexibility and could go up to 4k. What is a normal price range for a custom setting in platinum? Is 2-2.5k about what you'd expect to spend? (I'm just guessing that based on similar settings I've seen at James Allen and the like)

My 5 cents.
Its a beautiful ring but somewhat over priced in my humble opinion.
The sapphire is dark and has no “vividness” this means it’s likely to look “meh” in most lighting conditions.
studio shots are always to show the ring off to its best but in real life we don’t have that type of lighting.
personally, the premium for unheated shouldnt always be placed over and above the sapphires tone and hue.
What you see with your eyes is more important in my book than words on a report. Most sapphires are heat treated and heat treatment is considered acceptable for most.
if the vendor has a good return policy, then there’s no harm (except you paying the shipping costs) in buying it and seeing how it performs in real life. If its a disappointment, you can return it.

I have had a few quotes from David Klass for intricate rings and they are all under 2k. Doesn’t hurt to send an email. :)

Have a look at diamonds by Lauren

My opinion is that you can have it made for less. This ring setting is simple and elegant, I think a reputable jeweler can easily replicate it for you for under 2k. Which affords you more for a nicer sapphire of your choice. If you like teal tones, try check out Montana sapphires.

Surface abrasions can be seen on the stone in the pics of the listing, that alone have put me off!

DK :confused2:
