I have been in LOVE with Tiffany''s engagement rings since I was a little girl, probably since that what my mother wears. SInce I am totally PS forum inept and couldn''t figure out how to create a poll (I''m still learning!) I was wondering what you all think?

Is Tiffany''s:

fantastic and high quality?
or
overpriced and overrated?

Here''s a little bling for your viewing pleasure while you ponder this question...

Overpriced and overrated. You can get almost an identical piece of jewelry for around 30% less than Tiffany''s. So if you''re a size whore (like many people here--on PS--are) you can get 30% more bang for your buck by going somewhere that is not Tiffany''s.

Just my opinion, but that blue box is NOT worth 30% more.

Personally, in terms of engagement rings, I think it's overpriced and over rated. The diamonds aren't the best quality that you can find, and you could recreate designs similar to theirs for much less, so I think most of the money you pay is to go towards the Tiffany name.

My cousin has a ring from tiffany's, with a same size diamond as me. And (all due respect to her and her fiance) if you put our rings side by side, mine out-sparkles and outshines hers, despite my ring being half the price of hers. I think most of Tiffany's rings are sold pre-set, which makes it harder to get a quality diamond ring in my opinion.

I also say overpriced and overrated. That particular setting style you posted is available from many designers and I''d prefer to pick the best AGS ideal cut diamond available to go in it (and save some major money).

I too adore Tiffany''s but when it came time to start looking for an engagement ring for me, there was NO way I was going to expect FI to get less for his money by paying for the Tiffany name. We opted for a custom Legacy inspired ring that I adore and was SO MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE than a real Legacy would''ve been with the same size stone. Plus, since it''s custom, there isn''t another one out there quite like it, and I love that fact. But I do think that Tiffany''s makes high quality jewelry and they have some amazing pieces! If you have the budget then go for it! But I always like saving money when I can, especially when getting something that''s the same or better quality.

Thanks for the input! I have been looking at James allen.com and I love that site too because you can look at actual diamonds, like on whiteflash. Its nice to be able to do that. When I went to tiffany''s and tried on the ring that I posted a picture of, I couldn''t believe how small a 1 ct. round brilliant was! I was totally shocked! I guess I really want a bigger stone and I rather not have BF pay an arm and a leg just for a name! Thanks again for the advice!

I say a little bit of both.. def. high quality and fantastic... but overpriced for sure...

I have a love hate relationship with tiff''s... I adore their designs but I can''t justify paying their huge markup on diamonds...

Overpriced and overrated...but it doesnt really matter what I think...if its what you want then go for it!

If you adore Tiffany''s, then that''s all you need to know.

bee* has a gorgeous engagement ring from Tiffany''s, and it''s something she''s wanted for years and years, if I recall correctly. I think the fact that it was her dream ring for so long makes it so sweet and romantic that she now wears a Tiffany''s ring, and I imagine that she would have been a teensy bit sad if she had gotten a replica from another designer.

It all depends on what you personally value and want out of your engagement ring. Will a replica look like a Tiffany''s ring? It could. But you''ll still know it isn''t a Tiffany''s ring, and if that is something that''s important to you, then it is what it is. It''s like the eye-clean vs. mind-clean dilemma that a lot of people face, but with branding instead of grading.

Personally, I wanted a custom ring, so Tiffany''s wasn''t even an option for me.

If you''d like a Tiffany engagement ring, and don''t care so much about size, then go for it!

If you want as big a diamond as possible in your budget, however, then it is overpriced. You can get larger diamonds for lower prices other places.

If Tiffany is what you really want that''s what you should get, I personally don''t want a Tiffany engagement ring but I do love other brand names like David Yurman and Graff so I''m not one to talk

Ditto-get what you love! But if you want bigger than a carat and don''t have an unlimited budget, I would steer clear of Tiffany and go for a replica Tiffany setting with a gorgeous AGS 000 diamond.

I say it depends...if you want a piece that is unique to Tiffany''s (like one of the patented cut diamonds, a legacy ring, etc.) then I would pay for the original and consider it worth it.

But if I can get the exact same thing for less elsewhere I would without question!

How about fantastic and overpriced!

If money is no real object, heck go for the Tiffany because is is fantastic. I fell in love with the Tiffany Novo, so my husband did his research and was able to get me 1 whole carat more, AND one color grade better for the same price. Not to mention our jeweler polishes our rings for us in 5 minutes every time we stop by AND gives us free sizing for the lifetime of our rings. The service has been priceless!

But again, if money is infinite, Tiffany is Tiffany.

fantastic and high quality and overpriced and overrated.

That''s how I feel!

I understand why people would get it~! I personally wouldn''t though!

Yep I would have been! It wasn''t Tiffanys as such that I wanted, it was the Lucida and as it''s patent cut a replica just wouldn''t have been the same for me. I adore my ring though and wouldn''t swap it for any other. As we were coming from Ireland, it didn''t work out too expensive for us either, even after customs.

So I was in Tiffanys yesterday with some girlfriends, and they were trying on rings. I tried on a 2.44 ct. F VS1 round, and while I adored the size

I really didn''t think the diamond was the best. Esp. compared to the 2.45 J VS2 Infinity I got to see, as well as several H&A diamonds back in Chicago. It was pretty, but just not worth the amount of money that it would cost at Tiffs (esp. when there are vendors like Winks, WF, Brian Gavin, GOG, etc. around who sell simply superb, incredibly sparkly and well-cut diamonds).

We also looked at some Novos. Just beautiful - the setting really is gorgeous. But have you seen the new chunky cushions at GOG??? I would take one of those in a heartbeat over a Novo.

So I think Tiffs stuff is beautiful, but really way past the price I would want to pay for them (~$45K for a 2.5 ct. Novo?!).

I am not sure that I completely agree that Tiff''s is "overpriced." Custom pieces can cost plenty. I priced out custom work compared to my favorite Tiffany ring and found that it wasn''t that much more to get the name. Other advantages: lifetime servicing of your piece (which other vendors do offer, but it''s not worth anything if they go out of business in 10 years) and better resale value, if it ever comes to that.

I LOVE Tiffany''s - but wouldn''t get an engagement ring from there. But for me it was the style, not the name, that was important. For some people, having a "Tiffany" ring is important (and that''s fine - I don''t think that''s wrong I just don''t feel that way myself) - I preferred to get a larger diamond with a similar design because I loved their round with pear sidestones engagement ring. So my husband went to our jeweler, handed them a picture of the Tiffany design I wanted, and they created a ring that looked just like it. I love my ring, and definitely would not trade it for the *much* smaller Tiffany version I could have gotten with the same money.

Doesn''t stop me from going into the store and trying all the rings, necklaces, and bracelets on though

For the Tiffany lovers, there''s a nice little thread going: Tiffany LIW discussion

I have mixed feelings about T&Co. engagement rings -- on one hand, I know that any of the "standard" cuts/settings are marked up in price because they''re Tiffany, but on the other hand, I really like their Lucida cut and I know I can''t get that anywhere else. So for me, it comes down to whether it''s a signature cut/setting.

Hi Bjedifish,
My BF and I just went though this exact thing, and for us the Tiffany ring made better sense. In our case a couple of issues really made the choice easy, but a lot of what tipped the scales in Tiffany''s favor for us might apply to the ring your looking at.

So we chose the ornate legacy--which has a custom cut diamond and lots of beadset stones. Both the BF and I were really into the contrast between the halo and other beadset sparkles and the comparable sensibility of the legacy cut. So for us, it would have had to have been an asher if we did a custom-inspired, and the asher would have meant a much larger stone for the same look.

Also, the quality of Tiffany''s beadsetting was really impressive to us. The ornate setting is really dependent on it since the ring''s whole feel changes when this gets heavier (This is even true at Tiff''s when you go up to, say you know, a 3 ct stone or larger--the very idea of this makes me laugh--seriously tho, I tried on a 3+ and a 4+ ornate legacy and didn''t like the ring at all anymore.) So, for us it was the total ring as a package. We could have gone the route of trying to do a replica, but we didn''t want to gamble time/money/emotion on only to be disappointed. It can be a lot of work to find the right craftsman. Just as much as finding the right diamond. Plus, every lose one of those 125 diamonds, and of course Tiffany''s takes care of it. For us with all of those tiny little stones, this makes for a nice insurance policy.

Now, I don''t think those criteria apply to every Tiffany''s ring, but in our case the usual Tiffany''s markup just didn''t exist. When we factored in the bigger stone needed, plus the cost of a custom setting like the ornate, plus the risk...Tiffany''s won.

I do think your setting is a little different tho. You can certainly get more for your money in an RB, and that setting is simpler. My advice would be to figure out what it is you''re really responding to with the TIff ring and then see if you can find it elsewhere. Then, I would say, look at the replicas and if there is something about the Tiff version that you can''t find in them (besides the blue box), then see if you think the extra cost is worth it. If so, maybe the that is the right choice for you.

Hope that helps! And hope you have oodles of fun looking and choosing!!

Hi Brown.eyed.girl., can you fill in a newbie, what is GOG? I tried to google it but came up with nothing! Thanks!!

Good Old Gold. It''s a PS vendor. GOG will come up a LOT if you search in PS''s search function.

Depends on what you consider overpriced.

Yes, you will pay a considerable amount more for a ring with the Tiffany name on it than the "same thing" (in terms of materials and maybe even design) elsewhere. You can definitely find excellent quality elsewhere. But the name and the experience is worth it for some, and there''s no shame in that! Personally, what I would do is go to Tiffany and try on a ring within your budget, then look at what you could get for exactly the same price through another vendor. Which one do you really, really want? That''s your answer.

My e-ring is from Tiffany, not because I care about the brand but because that''s where my FI decided to shop. It''s a smaller size, which I think tend to be less overpriced relative to larger stones. We have a couple Tiffany stores nearby, and it''s nice to be able to get it cleaned and inspected whenever I want -- the customer service is great. However, my wedding band is going to be from one of the vendors who is highly regarded here, custom-made although inspired by a Tiffany band. But the Tiffany one wasn''t exactly what I wanted, and the one I''m getting will be -- plus, a larger tcw and less than half the price!

If you have a specific Tiffany design in mind, or you''ve always imagined having Tiffany e-ring, I think its worth it.

But if that''s not what you have your heart set on, I would definitely check out Good Old Gold. I''ve talked to Sarah at GOG, and she is really sweet and will give you honest opinions if you are comparing a couple of specific stones.

worth every penny. i heart tiffanys. my e ring is not from tiffany''s b/c fi doesn''t feel the same way...
if it''s within your means... do it.

I *personally* think it is fantastic quality and customer service...I enjoy that there are Tiffany's in major cities for cleanings (petty, but honest)...and while they are a little overpriced, it is worth it to me. I never thought that way, until I had my e-ring re-set there...(clarification: it is a T&Co ring that Tiffany re-designed for me...)

Most on PS tend not to agree---but it is a personal choice.

The only thing that really bothers me about Tiffanys, and Cartier, and other such stores (other than mark-up) is that you can''t get sometihng custom done, or really altered (like thinner shank, or claw prongs, etc.). I don''t think it''s too much of a concern for most (maybe just for us PS-obsessed) but it would really bother me that I wouldn''t be able to have my ring exactly the way I wanted it.
