Does anyone own a timeshare? If so, where? How do you like it? Do you think it''s worth it?

My bf is considering buying one (if he gets it before a ring, I''ll kill him... but that''s another story)...

We own one in Hawaii. In hindsight, I think it was a dumb purchase. We tend to be impulsive sometimes, and this is one artifact of that. Some people love timeshares, and they work great for them. I think it is best if you want to travel with a family/group (you get a condo rather than hotel rooms), and if you are a big planner. (You have to reserve them as much as a year in advance.) We aren't either of these, so it doesn't work well with our lifestyle.

ETA: Don't buy it as an investment. I don't know of anyone who has ever sold for a profit. They are an expense, and should pay for themselves to some extent over a long time of use. Also, he should check into buying a resale. I hear they can be great deals.

We don''t but our good friends do and they don''t love it. Actually they wish they had never got it in the first place. It seemed good at the time, but has turned out to be a hassle.

One of my best friends parent''s have like 6 of them. Its ridiculous (IMO). They love it because they have their weeks, they go every year, same time, same place. They love it because they dont have to do anything, they know where they''re going and when and just buy their tickets. Their kids, however, are getting tired of going.

Another friend of the family has one with a hotel chain. It sounded sort of interesting, like they had a home resort and then they could pay a nominal fee to switch it, but it had to be for the same week they purchased. But I think as mentioned before, you have to arrange that WELL in advance.

Personally...they''re so not for me, but I know other people that love theirs, so I guess it depends on how you plan on using it. For me, I like to go where I want, when I want and I get bored going to the same place, especially if it is beachy! But that is just me. If you research it and it is a good option for you guys, go for it!

A few things I''ll add... the best way to buy is resale. You can get some amazing deals at some amazing resorts. My parents have a few and have had them forever. Over Christmas we would always go to Vail, Banff, Whistler, etc to go skiing and with the timeshare we''d stay in an amazing resort and only pay the maintence fee. These places would cost upwards of $10,000 for the week and they would pay at most a few hundred. Yes you have to book ahead, but when you know that every Christmas you want to go skiing and every Easter you want to go to the Bahamas, it is pretty easy to book ahead.

... I agree that they do burn alot of people because people get lured into it and then NEVER use them.

we got one in orlando, florida...the stupidest thing we could have ever done!! we haven''t used our weeks and we''re just paying for it for nothing!!! think seriously before contemplating a purchase..we were too rash...
