I realize these are not the best pictures in the world, but the sun is down already! I just received this cute, light orange pink .4 ct sapphire in the mail. It was unbelievably cheap, but advertised as unheated from a dealer I perceive to be reasonably trustworthy. Based on these pics, do you think there would be any point in sending it for AGL certification to see if it might be labeled a padparadscha? It would mostly be an exercise in fun; the cost of the lab would far exceed the cost of the gem. But, I do live right here in NYC and could save on shipping. If you could afford the $70, what would you do? The last photo is probably the most accurate as to the color, which I do not see as being brown in real life.

Save the $$ to go toward the setting

I would send it in, but only if I wouldn't be unhappy if it didn't come back a Pad.

No.

Unless you are planning to resell it at a premium. Even then, you imply that that would not be cost-effective. Gem sellers the world over can get a "pad" designation a lot easier and cheaper than you can in NYC. Your seller did not go that route for some presumably good reason.

As some have found here, even a high-confidence, reliable pad designation does not mean a stone is particularly attractive. I seem to see a lot of sallow, yellowy pads lately whereas my ideal would be closer to medium tone (rather than light or pastel) with some real pink in with the orange.

As an aside, it looks very orange to me, although the pictures themselves are very yellow.

It's not more orange, it is more pink. I guess it is not really worth posting pictures because I am never able to correctly capture gem colors with my iphone.

If an exercise in fun/learning experience is ‘worth’ it to you at $70, I say go for it. I’ve spent plenty on ‘learning experiences’ and don’t regret much of it.
But not for the purpose in thinking the vendor missed an opportunity.

I feel you on trying to photograph a pseudo pad /peach sapphire, and getting a decent similarity to what you see in person, on your monitor.
I bought a 2ct+ peach sapphire not that long ago. It has an AGL brief. AGL didn’t designate it as a pad. The vendor disagreed with their assessment, and suggested that I should think about sending it to GIA and he thought it would get the coveted pad designation there. (Sales tactic?)
I’m not going to, though. It’s not going to change what it’s ‘worth’, nor what I see with my eyes. Nor will it magically photo easier -HA! Plus - I do really really believe if the vendor truly felt it would make a difference in any emotional way or business sense - they would have done it themselves.
