IMG_0372.JPG IMG_0364.JPG IMG_0370.JPG My friend and I went to a gem show yesterday. I was just going to look, but when I saw this tiny (.30 carat) blue spinel, I had to have it! I don't think it's a cobalt spinel because it didn't have the insane $300 for a pin dot price tag. I don't care though. I just love the blue. I'd like to put it into a filigree white gold or platinum pendant with diamonds. Also, I have a way better pic of a spinel I bought last month. Excuse my dry hands.

It's a really pretty colour, white metal will really make it pop!

That is a gorgeous blue spinel  I have been dying to own a pretty blue spinel, great find! Do you know how you will set it?

What a popping colour! Very pretty. Thanks for sharing your new beauty. Any setting plans yet?

Thank you Acinom, SimoneDi and Austina!

I plan to set it in a white gold or platinum pendant with diamonds. I really like fillagree. I'm open to suggestions though.

I agree Austina that white metal will make it pop.

What a lovely blue spinel! That color is divine! Please post more pics as soon as you set it so we can enjoy it with you.

Thank you! I will. It might be in a few months though. The vendor I purchased from had a gray spinel, a blue spinel that was quite a bit larger than mine and a couple of darker teal spinels. I'm sure he had others, but it was hard to focus after I saw the blue.
I usually just see pink and purple spinels with the occasional red or blue at gem shows, but he carried colors I typically only see on the Gemcal and Seda Gems websites.

That is an intense, insanely electrifying lovely blue that will draw eyes across the room in spite of its size!
Congrats on the find at the right price!

Same effect when I saw my cobalt spinel mixed in a tray with other spinels and sapphires. Will you have it tested out of curiousity? I would take your spinel over the majority of cobalt spinels that lack that hauyne-like blue color. Nice find!

Really beautiful blue! Gorgeous! I love blue spinels.

I LOVE the color!! I can't wait to see it set.

I might have it tested before I have it set in a few months. I did see a cobalt spinel from another vendor that wasn't that expensive. It was a sparkly, pretty trilliallnt, but it was way darker.

Lovely spinels. The blue steals the show though. That is a rare blue color for spinel and is absolutely stunning. :appl:

It is beautiful!

What a pretty blue! Congratulations on your find!!

Thank you tkyasx78 and MissyBeaucoup!

I have never seen a true cobalt spinel in person but how could anything be MORE blue? This must be as good as it gets!

What a pretty blue ! Congrats :kiss2:

Not sure this is small - relatively speaking; the only larger stones that blue I heard of were Hauyine of just a couple of carats ... No sapphire or spinel to match size & colour with those. Not even rummors to chase. No idea what such things might be worth, if they do exist.

Btw. - sidestones ? (half-joking)

Thank you! It does get darker indoors, but not too dark. I took these photos in bright sunlight. I'm not sure what cobalt spinels are supposed to do in uv light, but this did not react, whereas my rubies glowed. I know that regular blue spinels aren't supposed to react, but not sure about cobalt. I only have the uv light left over from a time when I needed it to detect pet stains. I really need to buy a loupe, Chelsea filter, etc.

the blue is very pretty, and I like the round cut!

UV reaction does not have to happen.

Even if the small round is a little darker etc. it is still a very nice sample to walk with, & still just on the possible side of perfection.
