I know there was a thread about tipping the other day, but I can''t seem to find it. Do you tip the owner of a hair salon? I know in the past, you weren''t supposed to, but I don''t know if things are different these days.

I believe that, that is the general rule, but feel it''s outdated. Luckily my hairdresser doesn''t own the salon. I guess it''s how you feel. I have a question does this apply to the dog groomer too. I don''t tip her as she owns the place. Am I bad???? Cause I have 2 bichons and the bill is like $140

Hi Logan,

My hairdresser does own the salon and I still tip him. I would feel terrible if I didn''t and he has never declined my tips so I continue to do so.

I'm not sure what the proper thing to do is, but if you like what they have done and that their service is good than I would think that a tip would be appropriate. When I was younger, I used to get my hair done by someone who had retired from a salon, but still did people's hair at her home. She accepted tips, but did not expect tips. So I think whatever you feel is best would be fine.

On a slightly different note (sorry for the mini-hijack!), I only recently found out that the people who bring you curbside carryout to your car, like at Carrabba'a and similar restaurants, expect a tip. I found this out because the girl circled the Tip line on the bill with a thick, bold marker before she gave it to me. I had never tipped before, and was confused by this, so I did not tip her. She huffed off with a sour face. Do most people tip? And what's an appropriate amount? 10%??

I tip anyone who does my hair. I just give them more if they did well.

I have always tipped anyone who provides a service to me (that sounded bad, but you know what I mean).
Hair salon- I always give 20% just if I were in a restaurant and more if the cut and color is outstanding.
Mani and Pedi- Same goes- 20%
Server at a Restaurant- usually 20% unless the server is absolutley wretched and then- 15%. I have been a waitress I know it sucks.
Bartender- I usually provide 30% because they always add drinks for free. I used to do that when I bartended too. The tips come a''rollin in.
Boyfriend- he gets tipped with foot massages

i haven''t heard of this!! ah! i only tip the hair stylist- who also does everything to my hair, wash, cut, color...wax, tweeze, whatever.
i haven''t ever thought of tipping for grooming services for my yorkie?!!

The salon where I go now, I do tip the owner when she cuts my hair (as well as the shampoo girl, etc.), but she charges the same price for a cut as the others in the salon which is not the norm I think.

About a year ago, when I turned 40, I had my hair really cut off (wanted something drastic for turning 40). I went to a really expensive salon in Annapolis and had the owner cut my hair and put in low-lights. The only reason I picked the owner is I thought by going to the owner, I had less risk of a bad cut. I did get a great cut and color, but by the time I left, the bill was nearly $300 so I did NOT tip him. I figured, with what he was charging for the cut, I could not afford a darn tip!!!

That must have been an awesome haircut, color and style! I only go to my stylist for partial highlight touch-ups and trims every three months (growing my hair out). It gets pricey, but sooooo worth it!

I tip them, but not 20% as if I was sitting in the restaurant for the meal. I guess it depends on how expensive the order is, but I bet I tip around 10% for carside services. I often only order small items, like desserts

, so I usually tip two dollars or so (which then means that is a tip of around 30% percent! but it''s such a small amount...).

As for hair, I tip around 20%, and I have never had the owner of a salon cut my hair, so I can''t really answer that. But I bet I would tip them something, just because.

As mentioned in the other tip thread, I don''t tip my dog groomer. I never knew you should.

That said, are you supposed to tip the girl that shampoos your hair? Or is some of the tip you give the hair cutter goes to her? The reason I ask is that I want the person cutting my hair to shampoo. My hairdresser opened a "spa". She now has a shampoo person that massages your head for minutes on end. I DON''T want someone doing that. Why should I tip for something I don''t want?

Good question, Buena! My BF hates to eat in restaurants so we do the carryout thing at those chains a lot- when Applebees first started the service they actually told you when you ordered that you had the "option" of adding what I believe was an 18% tip to the bill!!!! That really threw me....when they carry it out I do tip now and usually 15% because now anything under 20% is considered too low here on LI but 20% for carryout seems like a lot. But I don''t tip when I go inside to pick it up, which probably makes no sense on my part but do we really have to tip for writing up an order & packing it to go?
I don''t want to screw anyone out of $$ but don''t know what to do (and a take out tab with an appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 desserts can top $60 at Fridays!)
