I am head over heels for my mint kornerupine that I acquired from Precision Gem. Out of 13 Mahenge spinel rounds I purchased from Yvonne, only two were the perfect shade of pink to complement the mint kornerupine.

I've had the lilac sapphire since last year. On its own, I passed it over again and again when it came to setting stones, but recently having gotten a trillion Mali garnet with crazy good dispersion, I thought I'd make a lemonade (pink and yellow) toi et moi.

However, in the process of playing around with them in my gem tray, I discovered that I love all these colors together more so than when they are separate. I think they look quite lovely together.

Trouble is, I don't like random cluster designs as much as abstract clusters representative of something.

Last night, I came up with this cluster layout that I considered similar to side view of a butterfly.

DF, however, was simply confused. :(2 is this too much of a stretch?

Then I made this layout, using the Mahenge spinels as oversized antennae tips, thinking to make a second bee. However, I think it resembles a bee even less than the other design resembles a butterfly; I just like the addition of the pair of Mahenge spinel I selected.

I don't care particularly for the purple spinel to be included; although it's nice, it's too saturated. It's just there to help create the shapes.

So, what should I do? Keep the lilac sapphire, Mali garnet, mint kornerupine together in the same work, or separate them into 2 or more rings?

Need your input!

Your first idea with 2 rings is easy to visualize and would both be lovely.
I can see the second butterfly but I'm lost by the third pic.
Is the butterfly still a ring? I can't tell the scale.

Yes, the butterfly is still a ring, a ring for my size 9.5 index finger.

I love multi gemstone clusters! I like the first butterfly more - what about using 2 stones for each side/wing? They will be asymmetrical, but that could be another option. Or asymmetric drop earrings would be lovely too!

Gorgeous stones! My vote goes to pastel stackers

@MRBXXXFVVS1 @Acinom thanks. I've worked out another arrangement I like, and plan on getting Daniel M to give me a quote. Here it is.

I like stacking rings in theory, but don't find myself wearing them very often. More of a hassle when I'm washing my hands at work.

I love your butterfly! I say YES to the different sizes of her wings. And the dragonfly is soo cute! I love and admire everything you presented in this box.

Aww thanks, Musia! You gave me the first feedback on the butterfly. Everyone else went straight to the dragonfly.

@voce the dragonfly is symmetrical, very pretty and cute. The butterfly as you invented her belongs to museum of Art but I want you to wear her!

/swoons with happiness at the high praise
I do plan on wearing the butterfly and the dragonfly (they're designed as companion pieces) when the rings are done. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I also thought about putting them on a cuff bracelet instead of a ring, but dismissed that idea due to me being less likely to wear a bracelet, out of fear I'll carelessly knock my wrist against my desk and make the tiny gems go pop.

As usual your color combinations are superb, Voce :-) Your butterfly and dragonfly motif would also look stunning as a pair of brooches. I've seen plenty of butterfly and dragonfly pins, but your gems would really step it up a notch!

I like the pastels together, without the purple Spinel.

DK :))

I looooove your asymmetric butterfly, it's very artsy... except for the purple spinel. For some reason the darkness of it makes it not quite fit to me. Hmmm. I don't suppose you can find a more pastel toned stone to go there? Or even a lighter colored purple/blue/grey spinel would work, I think.

I first voted to keep them separate, however, I changed my mind. I love your latest arrangement. This ring will truly be an object d’art. I also agree that it is a great way to keep them together instead of the hassle of many separate rings that you may not end up wearing as much. I do adore butterflies and this is such a lovely summer project!

@dk168 @deorwine @Sunstorm I really did try to find a pastel colored replacement for the purple spinel. There are no more trillions for sale in that size range. I need a 5mm-ish one. I bought a 4.6mm blue zircon from Kosnar Gems as a replacement, but I think it ruins the proportions, even if the color itself is a better fit. Judge for yourselves.

For reference, less scrolling, reposting previous arrangement.

I'm not willing to wait around on a bespoke project to cut a replacement, so most likely the purple spinel will stay, unless everyone prefers the zircon arrangement next to the kornerupine.

I actually like the zircon next to the lilac sapphire, first pic. Larger on one side and smaller on the other gives it a distance perspective, like the butterfly is coming in for a landing instead of being seen straight on.

To my eye the purple spinel works better, the blue zircon is too small. But this pastel blue is very good!

I love the butterfly and the dragonfly!!

I think you already have the replacement stone, it was hiding in plain site. =)2

The teal kornerupine trillion is there same size as the Mali garnet, and it has a window. I'm afraid it's not quite the same quality as the other gems, but I can check it out.

I like the purple spinel version. Interesting suggestion from @prs, do check it out. The proportions are great with that one but I think I still slightly prefer the purple spinel. Even the color of the spinel works for me, contrasting a bit yes, a bit different, yes but somehow I find it cool.
