Hello! We are considering buying a blue sapphire for an engagement ring, but I worry that it may be too dark. I’m hoping I can’t am feedback before we purchase as it’s not from somewhere that we will be able to return it. We areplanning to pick a darker stone as that is our preference, but worry this is too dark. Thanks in advance for your advice/opinion!

The stone is very dark, and once set it will be darker still, probably dark inky blue.

While it would be too dark for me, dark sapphires are not my preference; perhaps it would be the perfect dark sapphire for you. The cut is quite good.

Personally I do not buy from vendors without a return policy. There are many dark sapphires available so I encourage you to post your stone prereqs and budget so that PSers may offer options to you.

Agree with @marymm - too dark. In less than very bright light, that stone will likely be mistaken for an opaque dark stone. I, too, would not buy it if there is not a return policy.

It’s dark but so was princess di’s .... if that’s the color you prefer just make sure you’re not overpaying for it

I'm looking for an oval shaped blue sapphire that is medium dark/more of a royal blue. Hoping for 1.5-2 cts with a budget of $2,000 for the stone. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here's an option for you from reputable vendor GemFix - it is under budget but over 2 carats - looks to me like a royal blue that should hold its darker blue color without inking out once set - GemFix has a 7-day return policy (full refund less shipping)

Thank you Mary! Are the faint inclusions that he noted worrisome?

Adding these videos that may help make it easier to see

the most important thing is the wearer loves it.
that's really all that matters
i like the colour in the video
but as has already been pointed out it will be darker once mounted
i have a blue saphire ring that looks almost black and that is not what i wanted

enjoy the hunt
and best wishes for your future together

It’s gorgeous but i agree it will be very dark when set. I have a very dark, vintage sapphire ring and I love it, but color preference is so personal and it’s probably darker than most would choose. I would probably look at other vendors that had a return policy before committing.5F4A4A6E-69DC-4E73-BF1F-A6120D0B035A.jpeg

GemFix is a reputable dealer with a good return policy. They try to describe the colors accurately, even using Pantone colors. If this color doesn’t appeal, look at other stones on their site. Going a little away from trade ideal blue-blue can save money if you like a shade toward green or purple.

To me, some small inclusions add character and show that the stone is natural. Colored stones are not expected to be as clean as diamonds.

In my personal experience, the stones I regret most are the ones that are too dark. Even if they are pretty in the sun, we spend more time inside. You will always know the color that is hidden in the stone, so that helps, but other people just see black. This is my personal feeling and it’s most important to go with what YOU like.

A reminder that trade members cannot comment on other's items, posts have been removed that violated this.

It's not just that it's too dark. Even though it's precision-cut with a complicated-looking pavilion, it does not seem very lively. It's dark but not a vivid-blue dark (like a royal); it's more dark than blue, imo.

Although tone is a matter of individual taste, the stone should scream "blue!" no matter what.

Yes I am looking for something in the indigo to twilight range! A friend when to see it in person and said the camera doesn’t pick up how it actually looks. She said it’s actually lighter in person!

I want to stress something; for me its too dark. Now on the other side of that I have a dark blue spinel (yeah I know ) that I absolutely love.

Yeah there's not always a rhyme or reason!!

I think you should see it as long as it has a good return policy, and see if it works in your environment. No one will know but you if its going to be "too dark". You may really fall in love with it and it would be perfect.

Did your friend take any pics?

I haven't read any of the above comments but you've asked if it's too dark? That indicates that you maybe think it is? Did you want a dark stone? Some people love them and it comes down to personal preference. What you may like, may be different to the next person (and probably is). The ONLY caveat to that is that I would say that dark stones can look darker again when set (unless you're careful about how you set it). So, if this stone is feeling a bit too dark for you now, it may well be darker again once set.

I was just about to post my reply, when I saw that @LD said essentially the same thing that I was thinking.
Just want to add, that I’ve seen a friend’s dark sapphire after it was set, and it looks black indoors.
