So, I often buy monogrammed hand towels with the bride and groom''s new initials as wedding gifts. I usually get them to match whatever other towels they have register for, and usually in addition to another gift but as something more ''personal''

My cousin, Rebecca, has her wedding coming up in a few weeks to a lovely young fellow. Let''s call him Tommy. Tommy Anderson. So, I go to my favorite towl monogramming site, type in their two first and new last initials, and out pops this preview:

ACK!

Okay, so she generally goes by becky, let''s try this again:

A little less scary, but that won''t work either!

Okay now, in all seriousness, what do you think of this one?

Do you see "rat" in there??

Well, it''s better than Annie marrying Sam Smith.....

I still see it. If she does any kind of monogrammed stationary, it will say that too. I think that there is no way to get around it.

Uhm, NIX!

Maybe it''s because of the ones that came before it, but I still see the rat.

OK, vase it is then =)

That''s too funny.

Had I decided to hyphenate instead of keeping my own name, my initials would be RASH.

How about his''n''hers towels with their first names?

Like this?

& this?

Too Funny! What about using just their last Inital or last Name?

How funny. I agree that just using the last initial would be good. Someone gave my husband and me some glasses with our last initial monogrammed on them, and we love them.

Rockzilla, what towel monograming site are you using if you don''t mind me asking?

I''ve been using www.westelm.com - they are actually mainly furniture, but they have a really good selection of monogramming for towels and such. I think they''re owned by pottery barn, but are less expensive. Also, all the monogram designs are quite modern/contemporary, so you won''t find any swirly cursive letters =)

What about putting the BIG A first, then the small stacked R and T so it''s ART?

wow - i hadn''t thought of this until just now, but in theory my post-marriage monogram would be... SAD!! that''s no good. i''m just going to add that to the growing list of reasons NOT to change my name!!

i think going with each of their first names is cute.

That is sooo funyy!!

Yup, I still see the rat.

Yeah - I''d either go with their first names only, or their last initial only if you''re bent on doing the monogramming.

That was a good laugh though.

Good grief, mine is HAM!

I''d just go with the joint surname initial.

Traditionally all linen was monogrammed with the brides initials only...

That is SO funny. What about a big "A" and call it a day?

People with odd ball monograms don''t usually get monogrammed items. My monogram spelled out something wierd and when monogrammed sweaters were all the rage I skipped it. If it spells out a word there is no way around it.

I am so sorry to be laughing. That is unbelievable! And you have a plan...a tried a true great gift idea...my dear you have gone to that well far too many times, suppose it is time to look into tupperware?

Is it too expensive to make the first letters a lite colored thread like a whisper of gray...and the last name inital a charcoal. Would use of that option mongram style that looks like greek letters...you know crunched in a circle work? I mean would it be less noticeable?

Oooh What about.....

Tom & Becky ........ Tom A Becky .... TOM

BECKY...

Has to be an answer...just has to be. You know another funny about these particular letters? To be announced...TBA !!!

Oh, no, this is too funny!

I''m actually excited for my own monogram once we get married because my first name is Lori, and FI''s last name begins with an "O" so my monogram will be "LOR" which is something everyone calls me anyway. Well, then again it might be annoying because it could end up looking like they just forgot the last letter . . .

Seriously, though, I''m not sure there''s a way to do a three-letter monogram and get away from it looking like RAT. Oh, dear, I don''t want to laugh at your misfortune, but it is a bit funny. I wonder if anyone else will just automatically get them something monogrammed without noticing?

I remember when I was pregnant someone telling me to always think of what your initials spelled when naming your child, for example, if your last name was Green try not to name your child Paul Isaac (P.I.G.) or if you name was Taylor do not use Frances Ann (F.A.T.) Seems funny to see it on the towels now!!!

All I have to say is, thank you, thank you, thank you for the best laugh I''ve had tonight!

I, too, love using people''s monograms...one of my closest friends is D.A.M., and it was hysterical when I had a keychain made for her in a modern monogram. For her BM gift, I did the script monogram with dMa...all in caps, but with the M in the middle.

I love your towel idea...that is very thoughtful and so sweet of you! I would love to get a gift like that!

That''s why we didn''t use our monogram for the wedding... our initials are S&M. If we put the G in the middle it often looks like an ampersand too! So far the only monogrammed items we''ve received have been straight up G!

Randomn question what if the bride isn''t taking the groom''s last name? Just wondering...

What if you did a more fancy monogram? Would it be as obvious? Would that be their style? Just trying to help.
