Hi folks, just a quick [or not] question for the setters/sellers/goldsmiths. I'm not asking for a lot here am I lol.. complete shot in the dark and I expect no answers on this one [trust me]. I have an *enhanced* 9.4 carat cushion cut diamond. Of course [OF COURSE IT DID..] it lost it's enhancement. I'll skip the drama and get to the point. Once it has been re-enhanced, knowing that it will either require heat [I would hope not] or tension to reset it into any ring-which type of mount would you suggest? Because even if I put it in a pendant there will be tension to set it in the mount.

Thoughts? [yes-I've learned my enhancement lesson-this will be the absolute last diamond I purchase with any kind of enhancement].

Thanks

Re-enhancing is going to require heat but that's part of the process. When it comes back it shouldn't be a problem for the setter. You probably don't want to tension set it anyway. That is best for high clarity stones. Common types of settings should be fine. Do make sure your setter knows about it before they start.

Thank you very much for this.

Make sure that anyone who works on it knows it is enhanced. Even for cleaning they should be told to be on the safe side..
Some are going to refuse to do anything with it because of liability reasons..

My goldsmith is indeed aware. The first world problem of the day.. what to reset her in. I know solitaires are safe.. but what kind of solitaire is worth holding that size stone. The current setting is just huge..its a frankenring. I used a lot of different generational family gold in it. And 6 diamonds from my mothers eternity band. Now I'm just at a loss. No idea what happens to her next. I dont want to have to keep resetting and remaking.

At that size - 9.4, wow! - I would definitely just do a solitaire. Simple basket setting, perhaps with double prongs for safety, set low enough to the hand that a knock won’t send it flying, donut/cathedral for stability if recommended, and at least 2.5-3mm shank. Classy and protective!

Ooh 9 plus carats! Am I the only one who wants to see this stone?

@blingmeupscotty I am sorry this happened but hope you can get it fixed and enjoy wearing it again. And when that happens can we please see a photo? ❤️

Well Roz [the diamond] is now out of the setting and flying to New York for re-enhancement. I dont have any real great before/after it lost it's enhancement. But you can see just in the photos above after setting the mish mosh. I don't mind the look of apricot jam in the middle..but she was more defined before of course. That's what im trying to get her back to in the video. Don't let the lighting fool you. She has changed colors many time. Light light champagne to a honey/golden/peach color.

I don't know -- I see something > 10 ct in your future :cool2:.

If I found it at the right price there would be no stopping my purchase :p But this one was dirt cheap [because it was enhanced]. I've learned this lesson the hard way. Unless you buy an enhanced stone..and it's already SET and you don't ever plan on having it RESET.. you may be okay. But that is never the case with me. And this is a very costly and time consuming process if you lose the enhancement. It's just not worth buying at a discount unless you plan on the resell.

Pretty much never buy as a consumer with 'plans' to resell. It almost never goes well. That said, why are you finding the re-enhancement process to be expensive? On big stones, everything adds up but normally this is a pretty reasonably priced process.

Absolutely correct on all counts. Re-enhancing a stone is only a pain in the ass because re-enhancing companies [or the company that provided the original enhancement and insured its enhancement for "life"] will only deal with tradespeople. I cannot find *any* company willing to do that for the diamonds [past and present] that I originally purchased. The first big purchase was made from a vendor in new york. The seller went out of business and I had only managed to track him down after 3 months of online investigation because the enhancement company would not accept the diamond from me or my jeweler. The second was sold to me over a year ago from a vendor out of the country. Having to reconnect with the original seller, retell the story on how the enhancement was lost and getting them to help you AGAIN all takes time out of their sold and go approach. Online vendors aren't brick retail shops per say. I can't just walk back in and say hey guess what happened. So it's just not worth it, especially for larger stones. I can get anything I want certified through GIA, but for companies like Yahuda, myself as a consumer-can't do it. I've tried 10 ways to skin that cat..isn't happening lol. And then there is the cost of reshipping and insurance back and forth if you get the vendor to help. If not you're stuck with a cracked rock.

I don't know your exact situation but I have sent stones to Yehuda to refill and they were extremely cooperative, even in cases where I wasn't the seller (I'm an appraiser, I don't sell) and we had no evidence that they did the original work. They have competitors that I"m confident can do it. I'm sure I'm not alone in this if you have an appraiser you like. It may be worth noting that this may be an insurable loss if you have current coverage. Where are you?

I'm in Portland, OR.

Cool diamond! I wasn't prepared for how much I like it. Great thread, thank you.

Oh no doubt you will. We just can't wait!
