Hello everyone!

It's been awhile since I've posted a thread on PS. A lot has been going on in my life, including the birth of our son. Still, I've still kept a distant eye on the forum & love reading everyone's discussions, ogling everyone's diamonds & gemstones, & occasionally posting!

I'm thankful to have such a knowledgeable, tight knit, kind yet honest community at my finger tips!

Anyways, I wouldn't usually do this for a friend as prices can differ wildly based on many factors but she's in a difficult situation & this is something that I can do to try and help in a little way.

She is exiting a marriage that went south. Id post the details as it's anonymous but I just don't feel comfortable airing it all out on a public forum. But trust me, this man is a rotten egg.

So, my knowledge lies in colored stones, not so much diamonds which is why I was hoping that you lovely diamond aficionados could give me your personal opinion on her engagement ring....

My specific question is: How much do you think she can get if she decided to sell it (ballpark est.) & what would be the best avenue to get the highest amount?

She's only thinking of selling it as this cash will help her exit the relationship & she doesn't care much for jewelry.

I'm guessing $5,000-$5,500. LT would be a good avenue, and she and the buyer could use an escrow service to facilitate the sale.

Finding a buyer who wants that setting in that size with that diamond will take time.
So if time is of the essence I'd have the the diamond removed and sell it loose on:

Since the setting is not super complicated and has no halo or extra diamonds I'd sell the (relatively simple) all-platinum setting for scrap.

I'm thinking more in the $4k range but I think it really depends on how quickly she needs to sell it. Second-hand settings like
this arent worth a lot (even though it is plat).

Can you post a copy of the GIA report? If its a well-cut stone she may have some luck in pre-loved/loupe troop. I think we can all
agree that it needs a good bath and some really nice pictures that show it off. I agree with Kenny, that it may be worth removing
it from the setting.

I wish your friend the best of luck...I'm sure it is a trying time for her.

Weird, for some reason PS didn't notify me that this thread got more replies! It updated me on my other one and responses. Weird!

Thank you all for weighing in. If you have anything to add, please keep them coming.

I'm truly appreciative & I know she will be as well. Thank you!

Have her reach out to Abe Mor. I sold a diamond to them and it was quick and easy

As mentioned several times above, most people buying secondhand rings are fishing for the diamond, not so much the mounting. It's a symbolic thing. The plan will be to take the stone and set it into something else that makes it into their special thing, not yours. It's a good plan. I didn't notice the date on the lab inspection, but with a VVS2, you might consider sending it back to the lab for an update. It doesn't take much wear to turn a VVS2 into a VS1; if you're selling to a consumer, they are often worried about this. A several-year-old lab report is a red flag on an otherwise excellent stone. If you're selling to a dealer, they can do it themselves (and almost certainly will). It's not that expensive.
