I bought a couple of spinels from Gemcal.com. I absolutely appreciate the gem quality colors of spinel.. I love looking at them. I really love the sleepy mahenge spinel's, but as far as what I wear and the colors I love the most, I lean more into the art noveau color pallet... dusty blues, greys and dusty pink and mauve. Colors like that.

I bought two spinels to look at in person. I have been on the hunt for a silver blueish green spinel for almost a year ever since I saw a "titanium" spinel.
I kept coming back to this one:

So I bought it along with a "silver blue."

Here they are in person. The blue-green one is a smidge more green in real life when compared to their picture (also hard to capture on camera).
The silver blue seems a lot more blue than the vendor's picture and in florescent light it turns purple.

On a cloudy day:

A little blurry... in florescent light. The left is the silver blue (a little more purple in real life), the right is the blue green (more silver grey in real life). They also sparkle nicely in the lighting.

Showing the sparkle... any bright green you see is because I was standing under a tree. Please excuse the red looking rash on my hand.
Any half and half you see isn't as prominent in real life as the picture here. You can still see color (it's not black looking), but light doesn't hit the facets until you tilt it a little.. which I assume is normal for the cut it is?

I like them overall, but I am not sure if I paid too much (about $80 each). I have a little longer to return them if I want to.
Just wanted to get your opinions...

Also if anyone knows of a silver blueish green spinel for sale, I would love to see it.

Thank you for taking the time to respond :))
I am ultimately looking for a bluish green spinel. I will be watching to see how much that one goes for though.

I love these! As for greenish spinel - they are kind of hard to find, if I'm honest. I'd hold onto that one. GemCal is the only place that ever seems to get any besides ebay!

Those are really interesting looking! I have seen some great rings with silver spinels here on PS.

Interesting... I wonder why there aren't a lot of the greenish spinels around. Is it because they are more rare or because the demand is low? That explains why my hunt has taken so long!

It's true. Probably just rare.

interesting color

I have one similar in saturation and tone (but towards lavender instead of blue or blue-green) where it goes silvery-grey sometimes and lavender others--its unique and dispersive. Mine is the same cut as these as well..the radiant..and, yes, it does show half of the stone darker than the other half at times, which I would say is normal for that cut style. It is not bothersome to me at all--at least when it comes to that cut and that tone. Cool!

And there are not many that go towards green that I've seen...not impossible to find, but certainly not common!

They're both beautiful stones and look SO much better than the vendor's photos which some them as dull and uninteresting - and they're certainly not! Great choices!

Do you have any pictures handy? I would really like to see your spinel. :))

Sure, although I am not good at taking pics at all. This is a 4ct stone, and it was cut by Dan Stair. I like it because it is moody...sometimes its gray, and sometimes its lavender.

I took these all at night so the lighting wasn't the greatest. The second one was taken in really low light as I was trying to capture the glow.

I really like it in the second picture... it's nice to see yours in the same cut as mine cause I haven't seen many of them. I really wish my blue green one was bigger like yours.

Thank you for taking the time to post pictures of it!

I really love your spinels in daylight. They are a perfect mix of green, blue and grey, and quite sparkly.

Thanks guys. I decided I am going to keep the blue green one and return the silver blue.
