As mentioned earlier the “OS trip that became a ring” I’m going to move onto a new home. Because when I did wear it, decades ago, I’d swing the sapphires to the “underneath” side of my hand so my mum wouldn’t notice it and consequently inflicted a few facet / girdle nibbles.
I know better now!
Anyhow I decided to have it re polished for sale to remove the nibbles AND have the bottom facets tidied up so as reduce the window somewhat.
What I didn’t think through was the loss of carat weight.
I have gone under 5 carats, ugh, now 4.9 carats.
And the valuer and I have a different opinion on colour. I would call it a pastel lemon yellow, he says colourless. He said that yellow is yellow and sapphires that only have a tint of colour are called colourless. I guess I should be thankful he called the side pear sapphire “Royal“ blue.
Too late for the weight loss but should I try elsewhere to get a valuation that says “pastel / pale lemon” rather than “colourless?
Here in Australia most people actually think it’s a stunning yellow diamond (go figure) - not complaining ha ha.3A05618B-7080-4655-AE22-4149004DDE78.jpegF84FA962-6E9C-441B-BEE7-4FCB71B0A815.jpeg

I have a few random thoughts but I am no expert so fwiw:

First, I don't know but maybe just list it for sale and see how it goes? If it sells in the neighborhood of what you were hoping for, then it now being a tad under five carats and how they label the color won't matter.

A couple of other random thoughts: If you think colorless won't be as valuable, would it be possible to have it treated so it is a more saturated yellow? (And would that increase its value?)

But if you did that, then I'm not sure the blue sapphires on the sides would be a look a lot of people would prefer. Personally, I like the more colorless look with the blue sapphires. I agree that it looks diamond like.

Also, again fwiw, but if it would make sense financially (or if it doesn't sell as-is) maybe consider changing it to a white gold setting. The yellow gold prongs look a little dated to me.

Good luck with it. It comes with quite a story!

not that i know about these things value wise but to my mind colorless saphire = white saphire
yellow saphire sounds much more fancy and valuable
and from the picture on my phone it does look definatly lemon

but i also like @seaurchin 's idea of listing it and seeing how it goes first

its a very pretty and to me quite impressive looking ring
good luck for a quick sale at the price you want for it

Thanks @seaurchin its from the 80s ha ha!
I guess I’ve always thought it a yellow sapphire so was caught “off guard” reading “colourless”.
of course when I put it alongside my yellow sapphire ring…..
Its likely no one will “love” the setting but the centre sapphire is very nice, clean and sparkly.
If I had the money and inclination I’d set the sapphire with diamond sides and then use the blue sapphires as earrings or as side stones to a diamond (or emerald even). They are a good colour match to each other though the shapes (under the girdle) are different.

Do you have a before pic? I’m just curious how much the color changed.
I think it lovely. The pale yellow makes it read more diamond like, in my opinion, and there are a lot of people looking for just that in an e-ring. I’d list it as is and see if anyone’s interested.

I agree with Elle. I’m sorry it didn’t turn out as you had envisioned but it is lovely and perhaps someone will love it just as it is.

One more thought here. If you wanted to, perhaps you could just have the prongs dipped in whatever they're coated in when there's white gold underneath, modernizing the look at a lower cost than having a whole new setting made. Or would that be considered "cheating?" Idk. But yes, someone may well like it just as it is.

Perhaps it's just the difference in photos, but in these pictures it just have a clearer appearance than in previous shots I had seen. Did polishing it make it look lighter? In any event, as others have noted, I would just post it for sale and not worry about the designation as I am sure you would be paying again to do as much. It's a beautiful beautiful ring.

I would put it on sale as is, no need to second guess what a potential buyer would want to do with it. I think the yellow gold enhances the pale yellow of the sapphire! As others have pointed out, it could be easily replated in a different metal (my jeweller told me plating on gold adheres well with the exception of RG) or the buyer may want a new fancy setting.

Just my two cents, I love exactly how it looks right now & I think colorless sapphires are so neat. This ring is beautiful!!! I'd buy it right this second if I could.

Edited to add: I quite like the yellow gold as contrast to all the stones---I think it gives it added appeal.
